The "protection" and "continuity" of the
electrical power supply are two terms
that must not be separated if we wish to
guarantee the safety of users and elec-
trical installations.
The recent addition of receivers or loads
that generate distortion in the electricity
grid (speed variators, electronic start-
up units, computer equipment, lighting
with electronic ballasts, etc.) has made
necessary the use of protection systems
that can distinguish between defects in
the installation and the electrical altera-
tions that cause the unwanted tripping
of protection systems.
The new range of earth leakage pro-
tection products offers state-of-the-art
performance to guarantee the continuity
and safety requirements:

} Monitoring in true root mean square.
} High frequency fltering
} Inverse curve delay (instantaneous
and selective)
} Adjustment of the nominal sensitivity

} Display of the fault current (monitor-
ing of protection systems)
Monitoring the status of protections al-
lows us to do the following in the electri-
cal installation:
} Analyse the insulation conditions.
} Preventive and corrective mainte-
nance.
} Reduce production downtime. De-
crease maintenance costs. Quick loca-
tion of faults.

P1/2-6
When the earth leakage protection sys-
tem detects a fault current, it acts on the
electrical installation being protected,
opening the circuit while interrupting
the supply of electrical energy, thus pre-
venting the danger of electrocution for
persons when the fault current reaches
dangerous values, either as a result of
direct or indirect contact, including any
potential damage caused to goods and
materials.
An earth leakage protection system is
composed of three clearly different parts:
} Detecting element or sensor
} Relay
} Circuit breaker
Detecting el ement or sensor: Cur-
rent transformer that detects the earth
leakage current of active conductors in
an installation, sending a proportional
signal to the relay. It can have a toroidal
or rectangular geometry, depending on
the arrangement of plates or the wiring
of the installation location.
The correct operation of the sensor re-
quires the path of capacitors to be as
perfectly aligned as possible.
Rel ay: Smart protection element. It
measures and treats the signal received
Defnition
Nowadays, "sympathy" or unwanted
triggers are quite common in modern in-
stallations. In these cases, one or more
earth leakage switches are triggered si-
multaneously, protecting an installation
from the leakage currents sent to earth
as a result of capacitive effects caused
by the installation.
Said capacitive effects can explained by
two reasons:
} The installation's cables cause earth-
ing condensation effects. The longer the
cable, the greater the capacity effect
} The capacitors of EMI flters in the
equipment with electronic power regula-
tion
Immunised earth leakage protection
by the sensor and either sends the trigger
signal to the associated circuit breaker
or not, depending on the sensitivity and
delay time values programmed.
Ci rcui t breaker: This element acts as
the current interrupting element. It can
be a circuit breaker (with trigger coil), a
contact, etc.
These three elements can be found in
CIRCUTOR's products with different
confgurations:
} All elements separately
} Relay with internal transformer
The different loads or consumption of an
installation can be classifed in two main
groups, depending on the type of insula-
tion from earth:
Loads with no earthed capacitors
The insulation existing between the unit
and the earthing elements can be rep-
resented with a pure Ohmic resistance.
If the resistance is not high enough, no
current will pass through the earthing
elements. The leakage current is zero
(current passing to earth under normal
conditions).
In case there is an insulation fault, cur-
rent will pass through earthing elements,
the so-called fault earthed current, I
d
.

P
.

P1/2-7
In this case, we must simply adjust the
sensitivity and delay time to guarantee
the adequate protection.
Loads with earthed capacitors
The current passes through the earthing
elements as a result of the unit's opera-
tions through its capacitors. In addition,
the length of cables in an electrical in-
stallation can lead to capacitive earthing
faults, which would lead to this situation.
The current can be injected with two
methods:
Permanent Leakages.
The unit injects current in the earthing
elements permanently. This type of be-
haviour is closely tied to the use of EMI
flters, which are installed in most ma-
chines or loads with electronic power
regulation, in order to comply with the
electromagnetic compatibility directives.
This type of flter prevents the high fre-
quency distortion generated by the re-
ceiver from being returned to the grid.
However, it is transferred through the
earthing capacitors. It also transfers in-
directly the fundamental frequency and
its corresponding harmonics, so that the
leakage is usually a set of overlapping
high and low frequency signals. There-
fore, it increases the risk of an earth
leakage trip with no real earth leakage
current.
Transient Leakages.
It has the same capacitive effects of ca-
bles and the flters mentioned above for
transient overvoltages caused by grid
switching effects, the connection-dis-
connection of circuits or effects that are
simply caused by atmospheric agents.
In case of loads with earthed capaci-
tors, the basic problem for the protec-
tion of the system is to distinguish which
earthed current is part of the unit's op-
eration and which is part of an insulation
defect. Electromechanical earth leak-
age relays do not usually solve these
situations.
The immunised earth leakage protection offered by CIRCUTOR has evolved in relation
to fve factors, in order to satisfy the needs of our customers, catering for the current
demand as regards the safety and continuity of the supply of electricity:

Measurement in TRMS and Class A
The voltage and current wave shapes
have stopped being complete sine
waves since the loads distributed in the
installations are not linear. The continu-
ous and harmonic components can dis-
tort the wave shapes, whereby it will be
necessary to take more accurate meas-
urements.
The current range of electronic earth
leakage switches measures the root-
mean-square-value (TRMS) of leakage
currents by sampling it.
The wave shapes in installations with
linear resistive loads are pure sine-
waves. However, the fgure shows how
the mean value will not work to measure
the root-mean-square-value with ac-
curacy when it stops being a complete
sine-wave.
In accordance with these problems,
the IEC 61008-1 Earth Leakage Switch
Standard determines the types of op-
eration, depending on the type of wave.
Two types are defned, Class AC and
Class A.
CLASS AC
The earth leakage devices used in do-
mestic installations or that protect loads
that do not cause distortions can be of
the AC Type. These devices are marked
with a symbol, in compli-
ance with the IEC 61008-1
Standard.
CLASS A
In the presence of non-linear receivers,
Type A earth leakage protection sys-
tems must be used, which means that
rectifed currents can be measured with
a continuous component of up to 6 mA,
including non-distorted currents (AC
type), marked by the cor-
responding IEC 61008-1
Standard.
The IEC 61008-1 Standard defnes two
types of ray-type curves to check the
correct operation of an earth leakage
device: an overload and an overvolt-
age wave. The overload wave shows
the effects caused in the measurement
of the earth leakage device and the ov-
ervoltage wave shows the effects in the
power supply.
Immunity against transient leakages
The behaviour of earth leakage pro-
tection units in the case of transient
overloads and overvoltages is vital to
maintain the continuity in the supply of
electricity. Therefore, the immunised
earth leakage protection relays manu-
factured by CIRCUTOR can support
very high peaks.

Adjustments of I
n
The IEC 479-1 / UNE 20-572-92 Stand-
ard describes the effects of currents
passing through the human body for
a frequency of 50 Hz. As you can see,
the effect depends on the root-mean-
square-value of the current passing
through the body and the time it takes
to pass through. In accordance with the
effects, we can establish zones 1 (zone
with no perception) and 2 (perception
zone) as safe work zones. Therefore, in
terms of the protection of persons, earth
leakage protection systems must act on
those zones.

curves are displaced to the right of the

The following graphs show that with an
identical evolution of the fault earthed
current in the same installation, the be-
haviour of the earth leakage switch is
different, even when the sensitivity level
of I
n
is the same in both cases.
This adjustment of I
n
allows us to con-
centrate more loads that incorporate
earthed capacitors within the same line
being protected. For example, in a com-
puter installation: Each unit diverts a
current, I
leakage
, of 2 mA through the EMI
flter capacitors included. At a sensitiv-
ity of (I
n
) 30 mA, you can install 7 com-
puters with the electromechanical earth
leakage switches. However, if you use
CIRCUTOR's electronic switches you
can install a total of 12.

The IEC 61008-1 Standard specifes
that earth leakage switches must be
triggered when the fault earthed current
is between 50% and 100% of the sen-
sitivity value (I
n
) selected. This means
that the values that exceed 50% can
set off the earth leakage switch trig-
ger. This type of case is common with
electromechanical switches. In the case
of electrical energy installations, these
have evolved in such a way that the ad-
justment of protection can cause great
problems, since it is too low. The elec-
tronic earth leakage protection systems
offered by CIRCUTOR determine the
trigger near 100 % of I
n
.
Therefore, we have a lower risk of trig-
gers and less interruptions in the instal-
lation's supply than when the fault cur-
rent is lower than I
n
.
previous graph, which indicates that the
current is less dangerous.See the table
attached, in accordance with IEC 479-2/
UNE 20-572-93, where a fault current
of, for example, 45 mA at 500 Hz has
the same effect as a fault current of 30
mA at 50 Hz. In the case of receivers
with EMI flters, we can consider that
these inject a high-frequency earthed
current (>2 kHz) and a low frequency
current. The use of type A earth leakage
protection systems is specifed in these
cases.

Remote control and reset
The IEC 61008-1 Standard allows us to
incorporate a circuit opening delay for
the circuit being protected, which will
depend on the leakage current level.
Therefore, the greater the fault current,
the lower the delay.
Two types of curves are specifed, as
shown on the following table of values:
} Instantaneous
} Selective
The application of these curves to our
earth leakage systems can be used to
increase the continuity in the installa-
tion's power supply and avoid unwanted
trips.
The leakage current value must be
available at all times in many applica-
tions. This information is quite useful for
the installation's preventive and correc-
tive maintenance tasks, since we can
act before triggers are set off.
For example, if the insulation degree of
a machine is reduced, the earth leakage
current increases, and since we have
the said information, we can implement
the appropriate corrective actions to
avoid the trigger from being set off.
The idea is to integrate the earth leaka-
ge currents in the installation's energy
control system, thus controlling an addi-
tional quantity.
Depending on the type of product, the
information can be presented as fo-
llows:
} In the earth leakage relay, through
the display.
} Through the RS-485 communica-
tions system.
} With an auxiliary measurement unit.
In addition, records and logs of the in-
sulation behaviour of the installation can
be taken.
In the case of earth leakage protection
systems in installations that require a
continuous supply of energy, with no
maintenance staff present, the remote
control and reset (or self-reclosing)
functions are very useful.
Remote control functions can be carried
out through communications systems
(RS-485, Ethernet, etc.), using the Power-
Studio Scada software. This function can
control the status of protection systems
and perform a set of actions through a
computer and communications systems.

Earth leakage protection systems with self-reclosing
Given the current effcient personal and
material protection requirements and
obligations, and the complexity of some
installations that require the continuous
supply of electrical energy with the use
of overload and earth leakage protection
systems, CIRCUTOR has developed a
wide range of units that make safety and
service continuity compatible.
Self-reclosing systems are an ideal solu-
tion for installations that need a constant
supply of electrical energy, without the
need for the usual maintenance staff:
} Rural installations
} Refrigeration chambers
} Public lighting
} Mobile telephony repeaters
} Traffc lights
} Lighting of tunnels
} ATMs
} Cable television
} Etc.
The type of protection element installed,
those that can be reclosed and under
which reclosing conditions must be known
by all self-reclosing systems.
Self-reclosing systems act in accord-
ance with the following:
} Earth leakage current (earth leakage)
} Earth leakage current (earth leakage) +
overload and short-circuit (circuit breaker).
Elements that form an self-reclosing system
Earth leakage transformer
The earth leakage transformer detects
the earth leakage. It can be built-in on a
relay or as an external element.
Self-reclosing relay
Self-reclosing relays add a series of
performance features (self-reclosing,
thermal or overload protection) to the
proven reliability and security of non-re-
closing earth leakage protection relays.
It performs the following functions:
} Detection of anomalies (earth leak-
age or overload) through the signal gen-
erated by the transducer.
} They analyse the anomaly to see if it
must generate an alarm, depending on
the parameters programmed.
} They also act on power elements,
which perform the grid load connection-
disconnection tasks.
Circuit breaker
The circuit breaker always interrupts the
fow of power, which supports the power
in the line protected and is an external
element of the relay.
The circuit breakers that can be asso-
ciated to self-reclosing relays are as
follows:
} Motorized circuit breaker (MT)
} Contact circuit breaker with remote
control (MCB), with a dual circuit break-
er and contact function (the function of
the contact is bistable).
Features of the circuit breaker:
} Nominal current (in contacts)
} Nominal current and thermal protec-
tion curve (in circuit breakers)
} Features of the control inputs of the
operational element
} Circuit-breaking power
} Auxiliary NO or NC signalling of the

Parameters related to self-reclosing relays
Relay status indicator
The indications are associated to the
type of protection, distinguishing be-
tween instantaneous triggers and inter-
lockings. The indications are sent by the
relay (LED) and, optionally, by auxiliary
contacts.
Another type of visualisation, depending
on the relay, is the instantaneous trigger
value and the number of total reclosures.
Nominal trigger point of protec-
tions
Standard values:
} Earth leakage protection 30 mA - 3 A
} Overload protection 6 A - 63 A
Timer (delay)
Minimum time that the earth leakage
must last before setting off a relay trig-
ger.
Standard values: 20 ms - 1s.
Relay power supply and tolerance
Self-reclosing relays need a permanent
form of auxiliary power supply in order to
manage the self-reclosing operations.
} Standardised value: 230 Vac 15 %
} Optional: 48, 110 or 400 Vac
Reclosing meter reset time.
To avoid the accumulation of triggers that
do not correspond to the same anomaly,
a reset time is defned for the reclos-
ing meters, provided that the maximum
number of reclosures is not exceeded.
Example: The WRU-25 RA relay has a
maximum number of reclosures available
before being pushed to its interlocking.
In installations with a transient earth leak-
age fault that lasts 50 seconds, the relay
is triggered 4 times and reclosed 3 times
(8 s +16 s +30 s). During the timing of
the third self-reclosing, the fault disap-
pears, so that the relay will remain in the
ON position. This is when the reset timer
of the reclosing meter will be set off.
The RESET option starts the relay, reset-
ting the reclosing meters.
Local (with the keys) and remote
test and reset
Self-reclosing earth leakage relays offer
the same performance as non-reclosing
relays. It enables the verifcation of the
correct operation of the relay with local
TEST and RESET functions, using the
keys on the relay, including remote func-
tions with specifc inputs.
The RESET option resets the relay and
the reclosing meters.
Number of reclosures, distin-
guished by type and number of
self-reclosing
Each relay enables a maximum number
of reclosures before setting off the in-
terlocking. The meter will be reset au-
tomatically if the maximum number of
reclosures is not exceeded within a pre-
established period of time (reset time of
reclosing meters).
This number will be different, in accord-
ance with the type of self-reclosing.
Output relay
} Number of relays
} With interlocking
} NO or NC Output contact
Time between reclosures
Time the relay takes between the trigger
and the self-reclosing. It can be linear or
exponential.
