School Jotter lets you create password protected pages. This means you can set up
areas for teachers, governors etc. that only they can access.

Introduction
Because School Jotter is web-based, you can update your website from anywhere with an Internet connection, giving you
the freedom to work wherever you prefer, and the flexibility to make urgent changes without having to go in to school.

Following the model exemplified by popular Web 2.0 initiatives such as Wikipedia and Facebook, School Jotter allows
students and teachers to collaborate in the creation and maintenance of the school’s web presence, whilst ensuring that
all contributions can be centrally controlled and monitored to comply with data and security policies. The importance of
the emergent shift towards Web 2.0 for the education sector was underlined by Becta as early as 2006:

“...it is likely that Web 2.0 approaches will be an important part of the mix in a system that supports flexible,
personalised learning within a specified curriculum and assessment structure...”

“Web 2.0 – what might it mean for developers?” © Becta 2006 (retrieved from http://www.becta.org.uk)

With a range of customisable templates and a variety of colour options, you can be sure that your site will stand out from
the crowd. And if you feel like a change, the template and colour schemes can be changed with a few clicks.

The inline content editor makes short work of updating your latest news or prospectus information, and our page
management system allows you to arrange the sections and links quickly and easily to ensure users have a stress-free
experience when they visit.

With a huge range of optional plug-ins and add-ons, you can make your website as versatile as you like. Amongst others,
the range includes plug-ins to handle spelling tests, quizzes, polls, videos, podcasting, mass email, and much more…

School Jotter is accessible from any computer with Internet access, allowing
you to update your site from any location.

Registration and login

1 Registration and login - it’s a
simple process.

2 On your next visit to the School Jotter site, you can

log in by entering your username and password in
the login box on the top left of the screen.

Signing up for a School Jotter account is simple, and takes less than two minutes. First, enter your school postcode in
the first box on the form and click the ‘Find School’ button. We’ll identify your school, and it will appear in the drop-down
menu titled ‘Please choose’.

Simply click on your school name and a username will be generated for you. If the username appears in red text, it is
already in use, and you’ll have to amend it until it turns green. All that remains is for you to choose a password, fill in your
name, job role and email address, and you’re on your way!

Choosing your template

The first step is to choose a suitable template for your school website. We have a wide selection from child-friendly
colourful designs to more formal corporate styles.

You will be able to change your template at a later stage, even after you’ve populated your site with content, so this isn’t
the final decision.

School Jotter has a wide selection of themes to suit your school. When you see a template you like, simply click on it, and
it will be applied to your new site.

There is no limit to the number of pages you can create. Your school Jotter website
can have as many or as few pages as you require.

Customising your site

Once you have selected your template, you can customise many
elements such as the background colour, the header text and more on
the ‘Customise Theme’ screen.

On this site the links, background colour and heading have been
customised to match the school colours.

Managing users and permissions

The ‘Manage Users’ screen allows you to add, remove and edit users - which means you’re in full control of who can
edit and contribute to your site.
Users can be assigned to different user types, which
determines what they can and can’t edit on the site. For
example a ‘Publisher’ can add content to the pages, but can’t
edit the overall theme of the site.

This screen allows you to view when a particular user last

logged in.

Create draft pages

Once you have edited your page you either save the page so that it instantly appears on your website or you can save a
draft version for editing later.

You can access your saved drafts using the ‘manage

drafts’ panel. From here you can view/edit, delete or
put your drafts live.

drop down list. Links to BBC ‘Bitesize’ websites are really useful for your pupils, providing comprehensive revision for
GCSE and Key Stage 2 in easy to digest ‘Bitesize’ chunks.

Invite a friend
As a user of School Jotter you will already be aware of its fantastic features, not to mention the freedom of being able
to update your website from anywhere with an internet connection. You can now tell someone else about School Jotter
through the invite function.

To tell someone else about School Jotter, click on the ‘Invite’ button and fill in the form.

maths practice, phonics exercises and links to the BBC ‘Bitesize’ web pages.

Synthetic phonics exercises

Flash cards sorted by sounds or phrases are easily
added from the ‘insert’ drop down list.

“High-quality phonic teaching…

secures the crucial skills of word
recognition that, once mastered,
enable children to read fluently
and automatically thus freeing
them to concentrate on the
meaning of the text.” – (Primary
Framework for Literacy and
Mathematics)

PayPal donate button

A PayPal donate button allows visitors to make donations directly through
your school’s PayPal account.

Site search functionality

A site search function can be added to your website to enable visitors to quickly find the
content they require.

Posting comments
A comments module can be added to your webpages where vistors to your site can leave
their comments. This has many uses such as allowing visitors to leave general comments
about your site, or allowing them to leave comments about the content of a particular
page - for example podcasts or videos.

Comments can then be viewed via the ‘manage comments’ page where the website
administrator can either approve or delete comments.

Page 06
10 reasons to use School Jotter : Number 7
Web stats allows you to see which pages of your website have been viewed and
how many times. These can be viewed by day, week or month.

Contact forms
Your contact form can be used for parents and website
users alike to send information and requests to your
school email address.

The form uses ‘CAPTCHA’ technology to restrict the use

of automated form filling.

You can also insert a form allowing parents

or website users to subscribe to your school
newsletter.

Photo slideshow
You can add a dynamic slideshow with only a few clicks.

You can easily upload your photographs to create a rolling slideshow of images
which showcase your school, facilities, examples of childrens’ work or images from
school trips.

Creating a database of users

You can collect email addresses from visitors requesting information or subscribing
to your newsletter and use these to communicate by bulk email, or simply
download these details in a format that can be read by Microsoft Excel.

You can then add these details to a user database for communication at a
later date.
Data from your forms is compatible with Microsoft Excel

Page 07

You can use keywords and descriptions on your webpages to make it easier for them
to appear in all the popular search engines.

Staff directory
A staff directory is easily created using common contact details such as
phone/fax numbers, job titles and email addresses. Images of your staff
can also be uploded.

Once your staff directory has been created

you can insert a ‘search staff’ module onto
one of your website pages to allow users
to search for a member of staff by ordering
the staff list by name, role or department.

Videos
Videos are a great way of bringing school activity to life.
Using our new video insert module you can add video clips
to any page on your School Jotter website.

Your video has play, pause, volume controls and even an

option for full screen playback.

Videos are easily uploaded using the ‘manage

videos’ page.

Most of the popular video formats are

supported. Here you can upload all your video
clips and insert them onto your web pages.

Page 08

Online forms allow you to gather details from your visitors and communicate with
them via a single click ‘bulk email’ option.

Podcasts
MP3 files and videos can be embedded into the website
creating a rich multimedia experience.

In this example an MP3 file of the school song is being

uploaded as an audio podcast.

This will then appear as a small controller bar on the

webpage. The control allows the podcast to be started,
stopped and the volume can also be altered.

Calendars
School Jotter features an interactive and fully editable calendar
allowing you to view or browse dates by day, week, month or year.

A calendar is a good way of informing pupils, teachers or even

parents of upcoming events and activities.

Simply clicking the name of the event in the

calendar brings up a small box showing more
details of that particular event. Events are easily
created by clicking the ‘Create Event’ link at
the top of the calendar and entering the event
details.

Events can be single day events or set to repeat

at regular intervals in a one month period.

Monitoring website usage

Monitor how much your website is being used.
Web Stats are a really good way of monitoring how your website is being
used. You can check how individual pages are being visted on a weekly,
monthly or even daily basis.

A total is given to show you how popular your website is on a monthly

basis.
