Prior to the Auto Apps Evolution 2014, we.CONECT spoke with Wayne Brillhart, Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory at Wayne State University / USA about striking tasks in the automotive apps evolution.
we.CONECT:
Mr. Brillhart, what role does your
company play in the field of auto-
motive apps and content develop-
ment?

Wayne Brillhart: The main focus at
Wayne State University in relation to
automotive apps would be the enablers.
Areas of research include Data Mining
and Knowledge Discovery; Database
and Multimedia Systems; Machine Vision
& Pattern Recognition, Mobile and
Internet Systems, and many more. In the
Artificial Intelligence Lab the focus is on
the design and evolution of cultural
frameworks for complex multi-agent
systems consisting of intelligent
interactive agents.

we.CONECT:
What is your companys most
significant project with relation to
auto-motive apps, user experience
and content integration at the
moment?

Wayne Brillhart: Currently a project is in
progress to study the process of
predicting potholes which would enhance
many existing apps that only recognize
potholes by running over them. Our
research focuses on advanced
recognition/anticipation.

we.CONECT:
Which critical trends and innovations
can you identify in the evolution of
auto apps and content development
to play a growing role in the auto
sector?

Wayne Brillhart: Bandwidth is a big
issue. Both volume and speed require
bandwidth. The fifth generation IEEE
Wireless LAN standard 802.11ac and
subsequent advancements will provide
higher data rates and throughput; but
experience has shown that there will
always be a demand for more.

we.CONECT:
Which issues do you consider poorly
developed or unresolved within the
area of auto apps?

Wayne Brillhart: In any evolving
environment there is a need for
standardization. The more platforms
there are, the higher the cost of the
applications to cover all platforms. This
was experienced when IBM chose DOS
for its PC operating system and made it
the de facto standard. Costs for DOS
(later windows) applications were much
less than for the proprietary Apple
operating system. Compatible platforms
would aid developers in producing apps
more quickly and less costly.

we.CONECT:
From your point of view - Which are
the conflicts arising between current
and upcoming players in the auto app
industry? How should they be
handled?

Wayne Brillhart: As new players enter it
should be the marketplace, not a
government that decides the winners and
losers. IEEE has been a source for
standardization and should continue.

we.CONECT:
Can you name the most significant
keys to a safe and fast integration of
apps and mobile devices in the
automotive cockpit?

Wayne Brillhart: A common standard
infrastructure would provide for safe and
fast integration. The difficulty is that as
completely new apps are envisioned the
required infrastructure may not exist.
Standards usually come after the
research and development phases so
that seeing the future would help provide
the standards needed for swift
deployment. Lacking a crystal ball,
standards will emerge after the fact, but
the sooner the better for developers.

we.CONECT:
In your opinion, how will the
dynamics in the automotive apps
market change within the next 5
years? Which potentials do you see?

Wayne Brillhart: Since new market
growth is exponential the automotive
apps in five years may not yet be in the
minds of the developers. I can envision a
proliferation of map information including
what to see with a plethora of
accompanying ads. Other developing
apps would be in the realm of Road
safety.

we.CONECT:
Please explain in brief the topics and
key issues of the presentation you will
be holding at the 3rd Auto Apps
Evolution 2014 congress in Berlin?

Wayne Brillhart: The presentation will
focus on road safety for the comfort of
the passengers, the protection of the
vehicle and integrity of the road surface.
It proposes auto apps that would save
money for road maintenance and vehicle
repairs in addition to providing a safer
and smoother ride for the occupants.
How? Predict where the potholes are
and will be developing.

we.CONECT:
What expectations do you have
regarding the Auto Apps Evolution
2014? Which outcomes and benefits
do you expect to gain from the
exchange with participating OEMs,
developers and research institutions?

Wayne Brillhart: I am looking forward to
learning about auto apps that I am not
familiar with in addition to learning the
state of the art in developing
infrastructure. I expect to gain knowledge
of leading research activities that might
relate to my own research.

CV Wayne Brillhart: Wayne Brillhart has an
A.B. in mathematics and physics from the
University of Michigan, a M.A. in Educational
Administration, Supervision and Higher
Education from California State University,
Northridge, and a M.S. in Computer Science
(Artificial Intelligence) from Michigan State
University. He has done computer vision and
image processing research at Wayne State
University where he developed a system for
monitoring freeway traffic providing real time
alerts for incidents that employed freeway
video cameras. Currently a consultant at a
major automotive company where he has
provided significant savings by improving
processes and designing user interfaces, he is
also doing research in artificial intelligence at
Wayne State University.
Auto Apps Evolution 2014 is the leading global
