On one hand where Different Mirror deals with different culture and
racism, Privilege, Power and Difference deals with the benefit and differences in the
society. United States is built on multiculturalism. From the time of Native American, there
have been struggles in race and culture. There were changes in the cultural norms to either
include or exclude people from different races.
According to the English traders, five Negroes were taken to England and were taught
language to become as translators for the English traders. The Africans that first landed in
Virginia were actually captured and then they were sold as slaves. They had to work without
any wages. They are bound to serve a master for a period of four to seven years to repay the
expense of their passage. (Takki, p. 50)
In the Thomas Jefferson's view, slavery did more than deprivation of liberty. He felt
guilty in buying and selling of Negroes as slaves. He saw slavery an immoral institution and
recommended for the abolition of slavery. (Takki, p. 62)
Approximately 2 million African who lived in north of America were free after the
American Revolution. However they didn't have the equal rights for e.g.right to vote. They
also suffered attacks from white workers. (Takki, p. 100)
The executive order was signed which established a practice that there would be no
discrimination in the employment in defence industries because of race, creed, colour or
origin. There was sheer need of labour in America's Arsenal doe Democracy. The
Employment of black in defence increased from 3% in the beginning of 1942 to 8.3% by
November 1944.The wages of black were increased during the war.
People feel offended by the use of words like racism, white, and white racism. As
conversation cannot take place with the use of these words. Thus these words were prohibited
and as thus it made the conversation difficult.
Workers accepted the wages that were unfair as it was worth less than the value of what
they produced. So people have lost the ability to buck the system and raise their voice against
the prevailing injustice. (Johnson, p. 43)
There is increasing level of inequality by capitalism within the societies and also globally.
So, there is very little chance to raise the status of all. Thus it lost the idea of building a
democratic society
