Course
Prerequisites
Power System Engineering
Objectives:
The course aims to make the students familiar with the preparatory work necessary for meeting the next
days operation and the various automatic control actions to be implemented on the system to meet the
minute-to-minute variation of system load in power systems.
Expected
Outcome:
On completion of the course the student will be able to
Analyse the system operation and control.
Develop the relation between the hydro thermal coordination economically in different
environment.
Understand the concept of interchange of power and the wheeling concept in deregulated
environment.
Understand the SCADA functionality in power system alarming and control.
Unit I
Overview of Load flow methods i.e. GS, NR, FDLF and Economic Dispatch. Take Or Pay Fuel supply
contract, Composite generation production and solution, Fuel scheduling Problems. (Quantitative
approach only) [7 hour]
Unit II
Hydro thermal coordination, short term hydro scheduling gradient approach, pump storage hydro-plant,
Types of production cost, Production cost method by load duration curve, production cost considering
outages (Quantitative approach only ) [7 hour]
Unit III
Interchange of power and energy, Economic aspects, Energy Interchange with unit commitment, Power
Pool, Transmission effects and Issues, Wheeling, Transaction involving non-utility Parties. (Quantitative
approach only. [8 hour]
Unit IV
Need for State estimation, Power System State Estimation, Maximum likely hood concept, Weight list
square state estimation (WLS), WLS by DC Analysis, Concept of observability, problems. [8 hour]
Unit V
SCADA: Purpose and necessity, general structure, data acquisition, transmission & monitoring. Overview
of the methods of data acquisition systems, commonly acquired data, transducers, RTUs, data
concentrators, various communication channels. Supervisory and Control Functions: Data acquisitions,
status indications, monitoring alarm and event application processing. Control Functions, Regulatory
functions and analysis. [8 hour]
Unit VI
MAN- Machine Communication: Operator consoles and VDUs, displays, operator dialogues, alarm and
event loggers, mimic diagrams, report and printing facilities. Data basis: SCADA, EMS and network data
basis, Configuration, Performance considerations. [7 hour]
