TOLEDO Ohio
Attorney General Mike
DeWine said Wednesday that
his office has sent letters to
58 businesses to seek substantiation of bottled water
prices before, during, and
after the Toledo water ban.
The office has received 56
related consumer complaints.
Although Ohio does not
currently have a statute that
defines what price gouging is, we are working with
consumers and businesses to
gather all the facts, DeWine
said. It is possible that the
facts will show that no violations occurred, but we want
to make sure that the businesses substantiate any price
increases and ensure they
conformed with Ohio law.
Those that cannot substantiate their actions may face
legal repercussions.
On Friday, the Attorney
Generals Office sent letters to businesses requesting
substantiation for their water
prices during the following
timeframes: June 1 to August
1; August 2 to August 4 (during the ban); and August 5
after the ban was lifted. The
letters also requested documentation detailing what the
businesses themselves paid
for water during those time
periods.

For The Record

Missouri Highway
Patrol seizes control
of Ferguson

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) The Missouri Highway Patrol

seized control of a St. Louis suburb Thursday, stripping local
police of their law-enforcement authority after four days of
clashes between officers in riot gear and furious crowds protesting the death of an unarmed black teen shot by an officer.
The intervention, ordered by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon,
came as President Barack Obama spoke publicly for the first
time about Saturdays fatal shooting of Michael Brown and
the subsequent violence that shocked the nation and threatened
to tear apart Ferguson, a town that is nearly 70 percent black
patrolled by a nearly all-white police force.
Obama said there was no excuse for violence either
against the police or by officers against peaceful protesters.
Nixons promise to ease the deep racial tensions was swiftly
put to the test as demonstrators gathered again Thursday evening in the neighborhood where looters smashed and burned
businesses on Sunday and police repeatedly fired tear gas and
smoke bombs.
But the latest protests were a world apart from the earlier
demonstrations, with a light, even festive atmosphere and no
hint of violence. The streets were filled with music, free food
and even laughter.
Protester Cleo Willis said the change was palpable.
You can feel it. You can see it, he said. Now its up to us
to ride that feeling.
After a particularly violent Wednesday night, Nixon said
local police would no longer be in charge of the area, although
they would still be present. He said Highway Patrol Capt. Ron
Johnson, who is black, would be in command.
The change was meant to ensure that we allow peaceful
and appropriate protests, that we use force only when necessary, that we step back a little bit and let some of the energy be
felt in this region appropriately, Nixon said.
Ferguson will not be defined as a community that was
torn apart by violence but will be known as a community that
pulled together to overcome it, the governor said at a news
conference in the nearby community of Normandy.
The governor was joined at a news conference by the white
mayor of St. Louis and the regions four state representatives
and the county executive, all of whom are black.
Johnson said he grew up in the area and it means a lot to
me personally that we break this cycle of violence. He said he
planned to keep heavily armored vehicles away from the scene
and told his officers not to bring their gas masks.
By late afternoon, Johnson was walking down the street
with a large group of protesters as they chanted Hands up,
dont shoot, a reference to witness accounts that described
Brown as having his hands in the air when the officer kept
firing. He planned to talk to the demonstrators throughout the
night.

The dark side of fun funerals

For centuries, religious believers have held

solemn funeral rites that were then followed
by social events that, in some cultures, could
get pretty lively.
The funeral was the funeral and the wake
was the wake, and people didnt confuse their
traditional religious rituals with the oftenfestive events that followed, noted author
Chad Louis Bird, a former Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod seminary professor who is
best known online as a poet and hymn composer.
But something strange happened in
American culture in the past decade or two:
People started planning fun funerals.
Our culture is anxious to avoid dealing
with death. It seems the goal is for people to
be able to keep their heads in the sand and
not have to face what has happened to their
loved one and in their family, said Bird in a
telephone interview.
Thus, when it comes time to plan funerals,
many people in the modern age -- including
many religious believers -- have lost that
sense of the reality, the gravity of death itself,
he added. The problem is that if death is
denied, then its hard to understand the true
meaning of life and our hope for the life to
come.

TERRY MATTINGLY

On
Religion
On one level, its easy to blame this on the
Baby Boomers, that giant cohort of 76 million
or so Americans who came of age during the
cultural revolutions of the late 1960s and early
70s. This was also an era, noted Bird, when
people increasingly began to define their lives
in terms of consumerism and entertainment.
Throw in a strong trend toward navelgazing, he said, and what do you have?
Fewer traditional funeral liturgies and a rising
number of events defined by the comfortable
label, A Celebration of Life. These services
tend to focus on good times in the past, rather
than on faith, grief and hope in the present.
The result, argues Bird, is an egocentrism that
extends beyond this life into a kind of necronarcissism.
To illustrate what this trend looks like
in practice, Bird recently wrote an online

meditation in which -- speaking as a traditional Christian -- he listed some phrases that

he wants banned from the eulogy at his own
funeral. For example:
-- He was a good man. Thats out of line,
he said, because even if I were the moral
equivalent of Mother Teresa, funerals are
not supposed to celebrate someones moral
resume. In Christian theology, the goal is to
remember Gods love for sinners -- including
the one in the coffin.
-- God now has another angel. Its important to understand that people dont become
angels in heaven any more than they become
gods or trees or puppies. The creature we are
now, we shall be forever, he wrote. This is
a sobering statement about the importance of
decisions made during this life.
-- We are not here to mourn Chads death,
but to celebrate his life. This is a false note,
argued Bird, because the gift of life cannot
fully be embraced if we disregard the reality
of death, along with sin, its ultimate cause.
-- Whats in that coffin is just the shell of
Chad. Actually, he said, My body is Gods
creation, an essential part of my identity as a
human being. It is not a shell. It is Gods gift
to me.
Bird said religious leaders shouldnt be

www.delphosherald.com

surprised that secular consumers are choosing -- encouraged by funeral-industry experts

-- to stage upbeat end-of-life celebrations
laced with references to their favorite movies,
music, hobbies and sports franchises. Want to
end your Celebration of Life with your college fight song or a Beatles classic, like The
End? The spirit of the age says, Just do it.
The bigger question, said Bird, is why
clergy and believers who embrace their own
faith traditions would want to join in this trend.
The funeral is one of the best opportunities that pastors have to preach on the central
doctrines of the Christian faith, he noted. If
you pass up the chance to do that, then you
really havent honored anyone, including the
person who has died or the people who are
mourning. ...
This is serious, because liturgical scholars
say that when our liturgies -- including our
funerals -- have changed to fit the culture, then
that change is real. I dont see this as a passing fad.
(Terry Mattingly is the director of the
Washington Journalism Center at the Council
for Christian Colleges and Universities and
leads the GetReligion.org project to study religion and the news.)

Do you know any of these people?

Patrick Harvey, the grandson of Gertrude Kehres Ames, is looking to identify
other family members in this photograph. Ames was born in 1907, her family
lived in Monett until the 1920s and some of them later moved to Delphos.
He is looking for information about his great-grandfather, Andrew Kehres,
especially a photograph of him. He had one son and eight daughters. This
photo is some of his great aunts and other family members to see if anyone
can provide some more names to go with them. Starting in the front row at
the left of the photograph he thinks are his great aunts Amelia and Clara;
the two standing in the center are possibly aunts Antoinette and Leona;
and Andrew Kehres might be the man with the beard second from the left
in the last row. Andrew Kehres and Anna Miller were married in Ottoville.
His great-uncle was Cyril and his other great-aunts were Josephine (Ward),
Elizabeth, Regina Gene and Edith (Kaverman). (Submitted photo)

OHSAA Board of
Directors meeting highlights

INFORMATION SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS The Ohio High School Athletic Association
Board of Directors met Thursday for its regularly-scheduled
August meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted later
at OHSAA.org.
1. The board officially approved the membership for high
schools for 2014-15, signifying that schools returned their
confirmation of membership document. Of note, schools do
not pay an annual fee to be an OHSAA member school. There
are three new member schools this year, including Cincinnati
Miami Valley Christian Academy, Cleveland Whitney M.
Young and Ashtabula St. John. There are 821 total member high
schools for the 2014-15 school year, which continues to keep
Ohio with the third-most member high schools in the country
(only California and Texas have more member schools).
2. The board was given a summary of the OHSAAs annual
new administrators workshop, held Aug. 5 in Columbus,
which was attended by nearly 200 school administrators to
learn about OHSAA bylaws and sports regulations, etc. The
board also received a recap of the five regional update meetings
that were recently held around the state to update the member
schools on changes to OHSAA bylaws and sports regulations.
3. The board reviewed the financial reports from the 2014
regional and state tournaments in basketball and dual team
wrestling, along with the district and state tournaments in

UNOH unveils new

Northwestern Ohio has a new

Instead of a dirt infield at

season.
We are very excited
about this project, Adams

Manager Bill Howe.
According to Howe, the
field is a true collaboration
of material science and civil
engineering principles, cresting the most advanced athletic
playing surface in the synthetic turf industry.
These surfaces are not
only safer for athletes to play
on but they are designed for
performance, durability and
low maintenance, thereby giving the school a decade of
service and satisfaction, he
added.

Beaver mens soccer in 14
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
BLUFFTON With the 2014 season
rapidly approaching, the Bluffton mens
soccer team will rely on its experience
and depth as it prepares for another exciting campaign on the pitch.
A squad that includes 13 juniors and
seniors, the Beavers are primed to leave
it all on the field after battling through a
2013 season in which victories struggled
to maintain pace with the effort.
Depth at all key positions has
improved, most notably at keeper where
four talented goal-stoppers will be tasked
with keeping opponents out of the net.
Athleticism across the board and team
speed are also strengths of the 2014
Beavers as Bluffton will put pressure on
the defense thanks to a group of fleetfooted attackers.
Coach Nussbaum has been impressed
with the work ethic his team has displayed recently, stating, This unit has
accepted the challenges we gave them.
They have worked hard both in the
weight room and on the field in an effort
to maximize their talents and I look forward to their continued maturation this
season.
The addition of a dozen freshmen will
bolster an already experienced lineup
as practices stay intense thanks to the

quality depth Bluffton has developed.

Keeping players fresh is imperative as
Coach Nussbaum has put together a
demanding 19-match schedule for 2014.
Trips to Wabash, Mount Union and
Waynesburg along with home matches
against Thomas More and Wittenberg
highlight the September non-conference
slate. Bluffton opens Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference play at Hanover on
Oct. 4 and goes to rival Defiance College
on Oct. 22 before wrapping up the season
at Rose-Hulman on Nov. 1. In between,
the Beavers host HCAC foes Earlham,
Manchester, Franklin, Transylvania and
Mount St. Joseph during a span of just 19
days from Oct. 11-29.
Four-year starter Jordan Andrews
(Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa
Valley) and fellow senior Caleb Berlon
(Kettering/Fairmont) will provide leadership on the pitch in 2014, Andrews in
the midfield and Berlon as an outside
back. Seniors Peter Carlson (Toledo/
Springfield) and T.J. Kline (Mogodore)
combined for 11 points a season ago as
Carlson found the back of the net three
times, while Kline chipped in with a
goal and two assists. Carlson is always
a threat as a flanker and Kline is a target
up front with the strength and skill to
maintain possession. Senior Ben Knotts

(Carrollton), a talented center midfielder,

added five points (one goal and three
assists) in 2013.
A deep class of juniors will be counted
on for quality minutes after being heavily involved during their first two years
at Bluffton. One of just five Beavers
to start all 16 matches for Bluffton last
season, Ryan Johnson-Evers (Muskego,
WI/Muskego) was an important cog in
a Bluffton defense that allowed eight
fewer goals in 2013 than it did in 2012.
He is a 2-time All-HCAC honoree thanks
to his work at center back. A dangerous group of junior attackers includes
Adrian Ramirez (Archbold), Jake
Headings (Cincinnati/McNicholas), John
Eckenrode (Northwood/Millbury Lake)
and Blake Drewes (Archbold), a 2-sport
standout who transferred to Bluffton a
year ago and made an impact both on
the pitch in the fall and on the track
last spring. Daniel Mushangwe (Harare,

Browns starting Hoyer, not Manziel, vs. Redskins

By TOM WITHERS
Associated Press

CLEVELAND Brian Hoyer has

held off rookie Johnny Manziel for at
least another week.
Browns coach Mike Pettine has
chosen Hoyer to start at quarterback
ahead of Manziel in Clevelands second
exhibition game on Monday night at
Washington against Robert Griffin III
and the Redskins.
Pettines decision is somewhat surprising since he has stated that the
quarterback competition is open and
Hoyer started the preseason opener last
week at Detroit. Pettine has said the two

quarterbacks will share the snaps with

Clevelands first-team offense against the
Redskins.
Its just something right now where
we are comfortable with Brian going
out there to start the game, Pettine said
Thursday. I think its a little overblown
as to who the starter is going to be. The
key component, as Ive stated earlier this
week, is that we are going to balance the
reps.
We will play it a little by ear as it
goes on, we havent truly decided as far
as the rotation but the goal is, for when
we look at the stat sheet at halftime,
that they both have the same amount of
repetitions and hopefully they both get a

good amount of work.

Earlier this week, Pettine did not
know if the quarterbacks would rotate by
series or quarter but added Clevelands
starter would play in the neighborhood
of a half.
Hoyer and Manziel have been competing for the starting job since training
camp opened last month and their backand-forth battle appears to be headed into
its final days.
Neither QB has taken control of the
job, leading to endless speculation about
who is leading and who needs to make
up ground.

Stewart sitting out

Michigan after
dirt-car death

Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Tony Stewart will not race Sunday
at Michigan International Speedway, skipping a second straight
NASCAR Sprint Cup race since striking and killing a driver in
a dirt-track race at a small New York track.
Stewart announced the decision in a statement Thursday. His
plans for the rest of the season have not been determined.
Jeff Burton will drive Stewarts No. 14 Chevrolet in
Michigan.
Stewart also sat out Sunday at Watkins Glen, a day after
he struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car event
in Canandaigua, New York. After Stewart clipped Wards car,
sending it spinning, Ward got out of the car during the caution
period, walked down the track and was hit by Stewart.
Wards funeral was Thursday in Boonville, New York. He
died of blunt force trauma.
Stewarts dirt-racing career is on hold and he could face
criminal charges.
Stewart has not commented since he made the statement
Sunday There arent words to describe the sadness I feel about
the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.
The 3-time NASCAR champion is winless and 21st in the
Cup standings this season. He would have needed a victory in
one of the final four races to have a chance to become eligible
for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.
Its not clear what sitting out does for Stewarts Chase
chances. NASCAR rules says a driver must either qualify the
car or race the car each weekend. NASCAR does have the
power to grant a waiver.
Stewart has 48 career Cup wins in 542 starts.
Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators
dont have any evidence at this point to support criminal intent.
The investigation could last another two weeks.
His sponsors have stayed with him as the investigation
unfolds. Mobil 1 has served as the primary sponsor of the
Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 Chevrolet for 19 of the 22 Sprint
Cup Series races this season.
The investigation continues, and we are monitoring the
situation, ExxonMobil spokesman Christian Flathman said
Thursday.
Regan Smith started for Stewart at Watkins Glen and finished 37th.
Burton made only two starts this season, the last coming in
July at New Hampshire. The 21-time Sprint Cup winner parted
ways with Richard Childress Racing at the end of the season
and Ryan Newman replaced him at RCR. Burton works as an
analyst for NBC.

Praise for small-town boy hit by Stewarts car

TURIN, N.Y. They came to grieve and share stories about Kevin
Ward Jr., who was born into a racing family and buried with racing flags in
his casket.
A high school auditorium overflowed with friends, family and racing enthusiasts Thursday in tribute to the 20-year-old driver.
With Ward in an open casket piled with orange flowers, his familys team
colors, mourners wept and laughed at favorite stories about the boy who
began racing not long after he began walking. The 90-minute service was
held at the South Lewis Senior High School to accommodate crowds from
this tight racing community in central New York.
Even if he had rough day, he always had a smile, a tearful Dylan
Swiernick said of his best friend and car-obsessed buddy. We were just two
small-town boys trying to make it in the big world. He was always working
on something. It was unbelievable how smart he was. He never got down on
himself when things werent going his way.
Ward, a 2012 South Lewis graduate, was buried in his nearby hometown
of Port Leyden, 55 miles from Syracuse.
He was an amazing sprint car driver and had a family like no other,
cousin Amanda Ward said in a eulogy. We used to tell him before every race,
Drive it like you stole it. He never let us down.
Sister Kayla Herring said the orange and white lapel ribbons worn by
family and friends were to signify that the team colors would remain bright,
even in the darkest times.
A recording of the Dixie Chicks singing Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) was
played at the request of Wards mother.
After the service, as Wards casket was taken to the hearse for the short
trip to the cemetery, mourners let loose helium balloons in orange, white
and black.
The accident that killed Ward Saturday night touched off debates as
video of the crash circulated online, with fans questioning whether Stewart,
known for his hot temper, tried to send his own message by buzzing Ward, or
whether Ward recklessly stepped onto a dark track clad in black.
After a bump from Stewart sent Wards car spinning into the wall, the
young driver climbed out and walked onto the track in his firesuit, gesturing
angrily. Stewarts No. 14 car hit him and Ward was thrown through the air as
his parents and fans watched in horror.
Ward grew up in a racing family and started racing go-carts at age 4. He
moved on to sprint cars and was Empire Super Sprint racing rookie of the
year in 2012. He was one of a small, tight group of drivers that traveled to
races around New York state and parts of Canada and Pennsylvania.
Racing and working on cars in his fathers shop, Westward Painting Co.
of Lyons Falls, were his double love, Wards father told the Post-Standard
of Syracuse this week.
His goal was to race in the World of Outlaws, the top level for sprint
cars, he added.
Blaney to run Sprint Cup slate with Wood Brothers: NASCAR trucks
series points leader Ryan Blaney will run a partial Sprint Cup schedule for
Wood Brothers Racing in 2015.
Wood Brothers announced Thursday that Blaney, who has been a Team
Penske developmental driver since 2012, will run at least 12 races next
season in the No. 21 car.
The 20-year-old Blaney will replace Trevor Bayne, who is moving to a
full-time ride with Roush-Fenway Racing next season.

number at Locust Hill, and
theyre deeper.
The par 3s are longer,
too at 183, 193 and 207
yards but the wider fairways favor long hitters like
Thompson, who led the LPGA
coming in with an average
of 271.2 yards off the tee. A
course made soft by recent
rain only made that edge even
larger, as did a stiff wind.
I would say it (driving)
was an advantage, said the
6-1 Thompson, who had
slumped in her previous four
outings, missing one cut. You
just have to hit it straight.
Doesnt matter what club
youre hitting.
Not a problem on a cool,
cloudy, breezy day as the
LPGA marks the end of its
long run in the Rochester area.
Thompson used driver on 14
holes and birdied all four par
5s. And she was accurate, hitting 10 out of 14 fairways and
reaching 16 of the 18 greens
in regulation. Consecutive
three-putt bogeys on the back
side were the only blemishes
on a round that reached 7
under with a birdie on the
par-5 14th hole.
Lincicome, whose best finish this year is a tie for 10th
at the Airbus LPGA Classic
in Alabama in May, had eight
birdies and three bogeys and
avoided any three-putt greens.
I think, take today and
just build, Lincicome said.

well. Ive been doing a lot of

really good things. Its just not
all coming together. I was hitting things to like a foot and
just tapping them in. It was
stress-free.
Lee hit 12 of 14 fairways,
reached 13 of 18 greens in
regulation and needed only 25
putts on the round.
A year ago, Park survived the
stress of a playoff to beat Matthew
and start a 3-tournament winning
streak that also included victories in the Walmart NW Arkansas
Championship and U.S. Womens
Open, her third straight major win
of the season. She began defense
of her title with a round that included just two birdies to go with two
bogeys.
U.S. players have won the first
three majors this year. Besides
Thompsons triumph in the Kraft
Nabisco, Michelle Wie won the
U.S. Womens Open and Mo Martin
surged to victory in the final round
at the Womens British Open.
The last time the first three
majors in the LPGA were won by
American players was in 1999 and
not since 1992 have Americans
won them all. A fifth major, the
Evian Championship in France, was
added last year.
Wie is not playing this tournament because of an injury to her
right index finger, while Martin had
to cope with a sore thumb and shot
a 72 that included four birdies and
four bogeys.

made the field when Wie withdrew,

Ohio State good but must

patch O-line, secondary
By RUSTY MILLER
Associated Press
COLUMBUS So Urban
Meyer and his wife were
coming back from the victory
at rival Michigan last season
and he turned and asked a
question.
In your wildest dreams,
could you have imagined
wed win our first 24 games
at Ohio State? he asked.
Shelley Meyer thought
a second and then replied,
Honey, youre not in my
wildest dreams.
Regardless of whether
that tale, told by Meyer at a
womens clinic this summer,
is true, theres no question
that he could hardly believe
his tenure with the Buckeyes
opened with two dozen wins
or that last season would
close with two painful losses.
Now 2014 beckons with a
couple of units needing major
overhauls and a franchise
quarterback in Braxton Miller
returning for a final hurrah.
WHAT NEEDS WORK:
The offensive line, perhaps
the strength of Meyers first
two Ohio State teams, lost four
of five starters. Unfamiliar
names fill the 2-deep.
Weve got six or seven

of the spring after surgery on

his right (throwing) shoulder.
He said he had some soreness
after the first week of fall
camp and was held out.
Ive dealt with guys
with arm issues before and
were being very cautious,
Meyer said. He could have
practiced but were in it for
the long haul. Hes right on
schedule.
Miller may figure in the
Heisman race and should
set most of Ohio States QB
records if hes healthy
through that long haul.
ITS
WHATS
UP
FRONT: The O-line may
have doubters but the D-line
doesnt.
Tackle Michael Bennett (7
sacks) is the only senior on a
young unit full of blue-chippers. First-team All-Big Ten
end Noah Spence (8 sacks),
Joey Bosa (7.5) and Adolphus
Washington should be good
enough to lend a giant helping hand to the inexperienced
secondary.
MISSING MR. HYDE:
Carlos Hyde was suspended
for the first three games of his
senior season in 2014 and still
piled up 1,527 yards and 18
touchdowns.
Now Ohio State will rely

on several backs to fill his

sizable cleats: sophomores
Ezekiel Elliott, Brionte Dunn
and Warren Ball, fifth-year
senior Rod Smith and freshman Curtis Samuel.
All have pluses and minuses. Still, the four veterans
combined for a little over a
quarter of the yards last year
that the bruising Hyde provided.
ALL EYES ON MSU: A
lot can happen before the calendar turns to November but
Buckeyes fans are already
focused on the Nov. 8 meeting with the Spartans in East
Lansing, Michigan.
The 10th-ranked Spartans
ended No. 2 Ohio States
school-record winning streak
and knocked it out of the
national championship game
with a 34-24 win in the Big
Ten title game.
The 2014 showdown figures to loom large for both
teams, well aware that the
winner is in the drivers seat
of the conferences new East
Division race.
Still,
Meyer
added,
Theres zero conversation about tomorrow or
November.
Thats only a topic in his
dreams.

Vincents resignation. He
announced earlier he intends
to retire in January.
Manfred fell one vote shy
of the 23 out of 30 owners
needed in the first ballot earlier Thursday. On the second
ballot, he won unanimously,
several owners confirmed.
Each candidate spoke to
owners for about an hour
Wednesday and met in sessions Thursday morning with
groups of 10 teams.
Werner was supported by
Chicago White Sox owner
Jerry Reinsdorf and Los
Angeles Angels owner Arte
Moreno. Other teams have said
Reinsdorf wanted a commissioner who would take a harsher stance in labor negotiations.
Selig is the second-longest-serving head of baseball
behind Kenesaw Mountain
Landis (1920-44). The trio
of candidates was picked by
a 7-man succession committee chaired by St. Louis
Cardinals chairman Bill
DeWitt Jr.

Manfred has been involved

in baseball since 1987, starting as a lawyer with Morgan,
Lewis & Bockius who assisted in collective bargaining.
He became MLBs executive
vice president for labor relations and human resources
in 1998, received an expanded role of executive vice
president of economics and
league affairs in 2012 and
last September was promoted to chief operating officer.
He helped lead negotiations
for baseballs last three labor
contracts with players and the
joint drug agreement that was
instituted in 2002 and has
been repeatedly strengthened.
Werner, 64, was the controlling owner of the San
Diego Padres from 1990-94,
triggering fan criticism for
the payroll-paring departures of Fred McGriff, Gary
Sheffield, Tony Fernandez,
Randy Myers and Benito
Santiago. He has been part
of the Red Sox ownership
group since 2002, a period
that included three World
Series titles. While working
at ABC, he helped develop
Robin Williams Mork &
Mindy and later was executive producer of The Cosby
Show and Roseanne at
The Carsey-Werner Co.
MLBs last contested election for commissioner was
after Spike Eckert was fired
in December 1968. With the
requirement then a three-

quarters majority in both

the American and National
leagues, teams split between
San Francisco Giants vice
president Chub Feeney and
Yankees president Michael
Burke and failed to elect anyone during 19 ballots.
Bowie Kuhn, counsel to
baseballs Player Relations
Committee, was elected commissioner pro-tem on Feb.
4, 1969, with a 1-year term.
He was voted a 7-year term
that August and remained in
office until October 1984,
when he was replaced by Los
Angeles Olympics head Peter
Ueberroth.
Former Yale President
A. Bartlett Giamatti took
over from Ueberroth in
April 1989, died later that
September and was replaced
by his deputy commissioner,
Fay Vincent. Selig, then the
Milwaukee Brewers owner,
teamed with Reinsdorf to
head the group that pressured
for Vincents forced resignation in September 1992.
Selig led baseball as head
of the executive council for
nearly six years, including the
7 1/2-month strike in 199495 that canceled the World
Series. He repeatedly added
he wouldnt take the job fulltime before he formally was
voted commissioner in July
1998.
Ueberroth,
Giamatti,
Vincent and Selig were elected unanimously.

and as he sharpens his timing and gets stronger with

in 2012. Junior Chris Wagler
(Leipsic/Pandora-Gilboa)

goals-against average and 40
saves in 10 contests a year ago.
Freshman Nate Otto (Orrville/

Central Christian) will add to

Blufftons depth in goal as he
joins the squad this fall.
Three straight road matches to open the season will
test the Beavers but with four
of their next five contests
at home, Bluffton will get a
chance to gain some traction
heading into the Heartland
Conference slate. Developing
legitimate goal-scoring threats
will be key as the Beavers
look to take pressure off the
defense after being limited to
13 scores a season ago. A deep

Coach Nussbaum and his team

Manfred elected next MLB commissioner

By RONALD BLUM
Associated Press
BALTIMORE Rob
Manfred was elected baseballs 10th commissioner
Thursday and will succeed
Bud Selig in January.
A labor lawyer who has
worked for Major League
Baseball since 1998, Manfred
beat out Boston Red Sox
Chairman Tom Werner in the
first contested vote for a new
commissioner in 46 years.
The third candidate, MLB
Executive Vice President
of Business Tim Brosnan,
dropped out just before the
start of voting.
I am tremendously honored by the confidence owners showed in me today,
Manfred said. I have very
big shoes to fill.
The 55-year-old Manfred,
who grew up in Rome, New
York about an hours drive
from the Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown must address
issues that include decreased
interest in baseball among
younger people and longer
games. He has served as
MLBs chief operating officer
for the past year.
There is no doubt in my
mind he has the temperament,
the training, the experience,
Selig said.
Selig turned 80 last month
and has ruled baseball since
September 1992, when he
was among the owners who
forced Commissioner Fay

Slocum, Paul Casey, Andrew Loupe

and Martin Laird were another
stroke back at Sedgefield.
Villegas hasnt won since 2010
and has only two top-10 finishes in
the last three years.
After pulling out of the Canadian
Open after one round last month,
he spent the past week back in
his native Colombia for a little
recharge leaving his clubs
behind in Florida.
Simpson, the 2011 winner,
hopes to make an impression
on U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom
Watson. His three captains picks
are due next month. Simpson finished 15th on the Ryder Cup points
list.

Koreas Gunn Yang advanced to the
U.S. Amateur quarterfinals, birdieing the final three holes to beat topranked Ollie Schniederjans 1 up at
Atlanta Athletic Club.
Yang, a San Diego State sophomore making his first appearance in
the tournament, was down a hole
against Schniederjans, a senior at
Georgia Tech, after 15 holes. Yang
won the par-16th with a 6-foot putt,
took the par-3 17th with another
6-footer and finished off the hometown favorite with a tap-in on the
par-5 18th.
In the morning, Yang beat
Englands Paul Howard 4 and 3
in the round of 32. Yang will play
Cameron Young of Scarborough,
New York, in the quarterfinals.
Young beat Kyle Jones of Taylor,
Arizona 1 up.
In the other upper-bracket
quarterfinal, 36-year-old Pittsburgh
financial adviser Nathan Smith
will play Frederick Wedel of The
Woodlands, Texas. In the lower
bracket, Canadas Corey Conners
will play Zachary Olsen of Cordova,
Tennessee; and Roman Robledo of
Harlingen, Texas, will face Denny
McCarthy of Rockville, Maryland.
MADE IN DENMARK

Working exclusively with Clevelands starters last week,
Hoyer, in his first game action since sustaining a season-ending
knee injury in 2013, completed 6-of-14 passes for 92 yards and
set up two field goals.
Manziel, the immensely popular first-round pick from Texas
A&M, only played with the second-stringers and completed
7-of-11 passes for 63 yards. He also rushed for a team-high 27
yards on six carries.
Manziels pro debut helped NFL Network set a ratings record
for an exhibition game.
Pettine said he had no issues with Manziel starting against
the Redskins in a nationally-televised game expected to draw a
large audience.
Im not concerned about Johnny on a big stage, he added.
Hes proved throughout his career he can handle it.
Hoyer began camp with a lead on Manziel but the former
Heisman Trophy winner has been closing the gap as he learns
offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahans detailed system.
On Tuesday, the team signed veteran quarterback Rex
Grossman, who has played under Shanahan and should be
able to help Hoyer and Manziel get more comfortable with the
offense.
Pettine wants to name his starter for the Sept. 7 season opener
at Pittsburgh before the Browns third preseason game on Aug.
23 against St. Louis.
Its possible the QBs performances against the Redskins
could factor heavily into Pettines decision.
NOTES: The Browns did not practice Thursday. Theyll return to
the field this morning. The team signed LB Caleb McSurdy, originally drafted by Dallas in 2010. The 6-1, 241-pounder spent his rookie
season on injured reserve and part of the 2013 season on the Rams
practice squad. He played college ball at Montana.

Obama: No Iraq rescue; further airdrops unlikely

BY ROBERT BURNS
and KEN DILANIAN
Associated Press

WASHINGTON President Barack

Obama on Thursday promised to expand U.S.
humanitarian relief to Iraqis threatened by the
advancing army of the Islamic State militants.
He took credit for alleviating the genocide
threat to thousands trapped on a mountaintop
but said the situation remains dire throughout the country.
Obama also said U.S. airstrikes would continue to protect Americans and U.S. facilities
in Iraq, and he said Washington has increased
its delivery of military assistance to Iraqi and
Kurdish forces fighting the Islamic State.
But he gave no indication he intends to
shift from the limited, defensive military
campaign he announced last week to one
designed to use American might to push back
and eventually defeat an emboldened Islamic
State army, which has made rapid and broad
advances across western and northern Iraq
since June.
Were going to be working with our
international partners to provide humanitarian
assistance to those who are suffering in northern Iraq wherever we have capabilities and
we can carry out effective missions like the

one we carried out on Mount Sinjar without

committing combat troops on the ground,
Obama said in a statement.
His remarks highlighted the gap between
the administrations increasingly dire assessment of the threat posed by the Islamic State
group and the limited air campaign it has
so far undertaken, which military officials
acknowledge has had only a temporary, local
effect and is not likely to blunt the groups
momentum or ambitions.
On Thursday, some of the most senior
U.S. intelligence experts on terrorism briefed
reporters in detail on the Islamic State group.
They described a battle-hardened, well-funded terrorist organization that is bent on governing the territory it has seized in Syria and
Iraq while also encouraging attacks in Europe
and the United States.
We assess that the group probably sees
conflict with the United States as inevitable,
one of the officials said, speaking, as the
others did, under ground rules that he not be
identified.
Obama has said little about the potential
external terrorist threat posed by the Islamic
State militants, but he has been emphatic in
his position that there is no American military
solution to the insurgent threat facing Iraq.
He has pushed for Iraqis to establish an inclu-

Williamswife: Star had Parkinsons

BY LYNN ELBER
AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP)

Robin Williams was in the
early stages of Parkinsons
disease at the time of
his death, his wife said
Thursday.
In a statement, Susan
Schneider
said
that
Williams, 63, was struggling
with depression, anxiety and
the Parkinsons diagnosis
when he died Monday in his
Northern California home.
Authorities said he committed suicide.
Robins sobriety was
intact and he was brave as
he struggled with his own
battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of
Parkinsons disease, which
he was not yet ready to
share publicly, Schneider
said.
Schneider did not offer
details on when the actor
comedian had been diagnosed or his symptoms.
The
Marin
County
Sheriffs Department, which
said Williams hanged himself, is conducting toxicology tests and interviews
before issuing a final ruling. Lt. Keith Boyd of the
Marin County Sheriffs
Department did not return
phone calls and email messages from The Associated
Press seeking comment on
Schneiders statement.
Williams death shocked
fans and friends alike,
despite his candor about
decades of struggle with
substance abuse and mental health. With Parkinsons,
Williams faced shouldering

yet another challenge.

Parkinsons disease is an
incurable nervous system
disorder that involves a loss
of brain cells controlling
movement. Tremors, sometimes starting out in just one
hand, are among the early
symptoms.
It can also cause rigid,
halting walking, slowed
speech and sometimes
dementia. Symptoms worsen over time and can often
be treated with drugs.
Actor Michael J. Fox,
who has long had the disease and is known for his
efforts to fund research
into it, tweeted that he was
stunned to learn Williams
had early symptoms.
Stunned to learn Robin
had PD. Pretty sure his support for our Fdn predated
his diagnosis. A true friend;
I wish him peace, Fox
tweeted.
Pop star Linda Ronstadt
revealed in 2013 that she
had Parkinsons and said the
disease had robbed her of
her ability to sing. Boxer
Muhammad Ali, the late
radio personality Casey
Kasem and the late Pope
John Paul II are among
other well-known figures
diagnosed with the disease.
Parkinsons affects about
1 million people nationwide, 6 million globally.
The cause isnt known but
genes are thought to play
a role.
There is no standard test
for Parkinsons; doctors rely
on symptoms, medical history and neurological exams
to make the diagnosis.

In organizing the trip, Johns, the Veterans

Service Officer for Van Wert County contacted
Van Wert High School FCCLA Lynda Ragan
sponsor about the Blankets of Valor program.
That group had provided blankets for two
previous Honor Flights out of Fort Wayne.
Ragan contacted Greg Gambell of the Van
Wert Shooting Stars 4-H club which made the
blankets for the veterans to take on the trip.
Donations for the material of the blankets were
provided by the Convoy Conservation and Fox
Hunters Club, Larry and Linda Stutz, Scott Ohio
Lions Club, Van Wert Community Club and Van
Wert Knights of Columbus.
The group was driven to Tipp City the day
before the trip in vans donated by Taylors Auto
Sales and Lee Kinstle GM Sales & Service by
volunteer drivers Paul Coburn and Mike Morris.
The veterans, guardians and drivers, were also
treated to a supper at Bob Evans in Tipp City.
The meal was provided by Van Wert Knights of
Columbus, Ryan and Debra Long and a grateful
American family.
Johns shared that he wanted to thank everyone who helped in making this a great day for
our veterans.
Early Friday morning, the group left Dayton
for Washington through Bill Nicklas with the
Honor Flight Dayton, Inc., group. Nicklas and
his team do not have an advertising budget to
help raise the needed funds to allow veterans to
take this trip for free but they do accept donations to Bill Nicklas at Honor Flight Dayton,
Inc., 525 Victory Road, Springfield, Ohio
45504.
It was an awesome trip, Johns remarked.
We had 11 veterans and five guardians on
the trip, For the whole flight there were actually 32 people, so we about had half the trip
ourselves!
The first stop was at the World War II
Monument. This is one of the feature attractions, as emphasis on getting these veterans to
Washington to see their memorial in person has
been a priority for most Honor Flight groups.
They brought lunch right to the memorial
and we sat on the benches and ate, Johns noted.
From there we went to see the Changing of the
Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.

mated the group is about 15,000 strong.

Critics say the administration is only putting off the day when the U.S. will have to
directly confront the Islamic State group,
whose forces surprised and impressed U.S.
officials with the speed and proficiency with
which they overran Iraqi government forces
at such strategic points as Mosul, the largest
city in northern Iraq.
A U.S. intelligence official said a few hundred fighters from the group chased away a
force of 50,000 to seize Mosul.
Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey
said last month he would present Obama with
a long-term strategy to defeat the Islamic
State, but officials have not described it. Even
the nature and scope of further U.S. humanitarian relief missions in Iraq is unclear, but
limited airstrikes continue.
The U.S. military said a mix of fighters and drone aircraft attacked two of the
Islamic groups armed vehicles and a U.S.made troop carrier, near the city of Irbil.
U.S. Central Command said the two armed
vehicles were attacked after they fired on
Kurdish forces, and moments later the troop
carrier was hit near the site of the two previous strikes. The Islamic fighters have been
operating U.S.-made equipment they captured
from Iraqi army forces.

Scientists racing to test

Ebola vaccines in humans

BUFFALO, N.Y. Conrad Bassett-Bouchard started

his championship Scrabble game Wednesday with the word
zilch and finished with the opposite the $10,000 prize and
the title of national Scrabble champion.
The 24-year-old player, from Portland, Oregon, beat
29-year-old Jason Li, of Montreal, in the final round of the
five-day 25th National Scrabble Championships played at the
Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
Bassett-Bouchard, the tournaments second seed, said he
knew luck was with him when he drew a wild-card blank tile
and an s on his first seven-tile rack. He led for most of the
match, winning by a score of 477-350.
Li, the 18th seed, said, I was playing catch-up right to the
end.
Li had the letters to play an obscure but potentially highscoring word but didnt see it, creating a buzz among experienced onlookers.
Hes going to be kicking himself for missing gramarye,
tournament director John Chew said after the play.
Chew, co-president of the North American Scrabble Players
Association, the events sponsor, called Lis presence in the
final round the biggest surprise in the tournament, which saw
an emerging group of younger players edge out the old guard.
Six of the top 10 finishers are in their 20s, and one, Mack
Meller, from Bedford, is 14.
Tournament favorite and five-time champion Nigel
Richards, 47, described by one competitor as the Michael
Jordan of the game, finished a surprising 16th.
All these younger players are avid online players, said
Will Anderson, 29, trying to explain the success of the tournaments 20-somethings at an old-fashioned board game.
The final game saw Bassett-Bouchard and Li at a whitelinen-draped table while a tournament representative livetweeted their every move. Although it was just one of dozens
of games taking place inside the cavernous meeting room, the
muffled clattering of tiles as players shook and drew from cloth
drawstring bags was virtually the only sound.
The winning board contained the words florigen, trooz,
venerate, contuse and barf.
Bassett-Bouchard said his win seemed imminent when Li
played jug, giving him room on the board to spell docents
and pull further ahead.
From that point on, he said, it was going to be pretty hard
for me to lose.
The 25th National Scrabble Championships drew 525 players from 11 countries.

WASHINGTON

Scientists are racing to begin

the first human safety tests of
two experimental Ebola vaccines, but it wont be easy
to prove that the shots and
other potential treatments in
the pipeline really work.
There are no proven drugs
or vaccines for Ebola, a disease so rare that its been
hard to attract investments in
countermeasures. But the current outbreak in West Africa
the largest in history is
fueling new efforts to speed
Ebola vaccine and drug development.
The handful in the pipeline
have largely been funded by
government efforts, including
the two vaccine candidates
that are closest to human
study: One developed by the
U.S. government that is gearing up for early-stage tests in
healthy volunteers this fall,
with a second developed by
the Canadian government
thought to be not far behind.
Initial tests typically are
performed on a few dozen to
100 people, to look for warning signs of side effects and
figure out a good dose not
to prove that theyll actually
protect people against infection with the Ebola virus.
Because vaccines are given

of each of the major sectarian factions
Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds and gives more
motivation for Iraqi security forces to fight
the insurgents.
The Iraqi political process was given an
apparent boost Thursday when Iraqi state
television reported that Nouri al-Maliki
had given up his post as prime minister to
Haider al-Abadi. That was a move favored by
Washington.
The Islamic State group has its roots in
another group known as al-Qaida in Iraq,
which survived years of U.S. operations that
diminished but didnt defeat it. Nearly all of
the Islamic States leaders were at one point
in American custody during the Iraq war, the
officials said.
U.S. intelligence has concluded that even a
new government in Iraq would need external
help to make gains against the group and that
neutralizing the Islamic State group would
be unlikely without addressing its safe haven
in Syria, where it has a headquarters. The
Islamic State has access to oil revenues and
other income sources worth several hundred
million dollars a year, the officials said.
The officials said they still were unfamiliar
with the structure of the organization and its
total numbers, though U.S. officials have esti-

This moving ceremony was a favorite of
the group, watching the precision of the unit
guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Van
Wert County group naturally found themselves
standing together to watch the movements and
hear the synchronized clicking of the heels.
From there, the group visited the new Air Force
Museum, then drove by the Pentagon before
stopping to see the Vietnam Memorial, the
Lincoln Memorial and the Korean Memorial.
The respect for the veterans was obvious
among those in Washington.
Johns related, Probably one of the biggest
thing that got me was as soon as someone would
see the Honor Flight shirt, from kids to other
veterans to women to foreigners, they came up
and shook the veterans hand and thanked them
for their service. It was an all-day thing; If they
noticed the Honor Flight shirt, they automatically came up to the veteran and thanked him.
That was really neat to see.
The respect was also very noticeable in the
welcome home celebration when their plane
arrived back in Dayton.
We were over an honor late when we got
back, Johns said. You would think anybody
hanging around, waiting to congratulate them
would have gone home by then. But Ive never
seen anything like it. There were hundreds of
people there. Military people, civilians, they had
girls dressed up in 50s outfits. We had a World
War II female veteran and they had a special
bow they put in her hair.
Johns is still gathering names for a group to
take another Honor Flight, probably sometime
next year. Anyone interested in going as a veteran or those wanting to be guardians, applications are available on the Honor Flight Dayton
website or by stopping by the Veterans Service
Office in the basement of the Van Wert County
Courthouse. There is a cost for guardians to take
the trip.
Honor Flight Dayton also has a way to
honor any deceased veterans who never saw
their memorials and living veterans who may
never be able to see their memorials. They
accomplish this at the memorials by conducting a ceremony that is referred to as Honoring
Yesterdays Heroes, Johns explained. You can
get this information from the website or from
our office also.

DeWine encouraged consumers to contact his office if
they suspected unfairly high
prices for bottled water as
a result of the Toledo water
ban, and in their complaints
many consumers explained
how much they paid and said
they thought the prices were
price gouging.
The Attorney Generals
Consumer
Protection
Section has been reviewing information submitted
in complaints and other
sources for possible signs
of unfair, deceptive, or
unconscionable practices.
Currently, Ohio does not
have a statute defining price
gouging.
The states Consumer
Sales Practices Act prohibits unfair, deceptive,
and unconscionable sales
practices. A practice could
be considered unconscionable if the supplier knew
at the time of the transaction that the price was substantially higher than the
price at which similar goods
or services could be readily obtained. It also could
be considered an unfair and
deceptive practice to dramatically increase the price
of in-stock products based
solely in response to current
events.
Consumers who suspect
price gouging or other unfair
business practices should
contact the Ohio Attorney
Generals Office. Consumers
should submit as much information and documentation
as possible with their complaints.
