1. The 9th WTO Ministerial Conference is
scheduled from 3 December to 6 December 2013
at Bali, Indonesia.
2. Transparency International released the Global
Corruption Perceptions Index 2013. India ranks
3. Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid
revolutionary of South Africa passed away. He
was also known - as Madiba in South Africa.
First black president of South Africa in 1994,
serving until 1999. Mandela and South African
President F.W. de Klerk were jointly awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their efforts to
dismantle the country's apartheid system. In
2009, Mandela's birthday (July 18) was declared
"Mandela Day". He also won the Bharat Ratna.
He was jailed for 27 years on Robben Island. 'A
Long Walk to Freedom' is the autobiography of
Nelson Mandela. 'Conversations with Myself' is
his latest book
4. UN General Assembly elected Jordan to the
UN Security Council as a non-permanent
member on to replace Saudi Arabia.
5. The Organization for the Prohibition of
Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said that the
weapons declared by the Syrian Government
have been destroyed.
OPCW is an intergovernmental organisation,
located in The Hague, Netherlands. The
organisation promotes and verifies the adherence
to the Chemical Weapons Convention which
prohibits the use of chemical weapons and
requires their destruction. The organisation was
awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. Recent
activity- chemical weapon destruction in Syria.

Director-General: Ambassador Ahmet Uzumcu

2014. What is shutdown? It is because of the
lack of appropriated funds, something for which
the US government will have to raise its $16.7-
trillion debt ceiling. As the country is already
under heavy debt, it's a tough decision.
Fiscal cliff was meant to end all fiscal stimuli,
both on taxes and spending as the debt increased.
14. The members of the opposition party
(Democrat Party) of Thailand resigned en masse
from the Parliament on 8 December 2013 to
protest a Government claimed by them as
illegitimate. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra
has faced more than a month of opposition.
15. The US has called on China to release the

Foreign Service officer. While serving as Indian
Deputy Consul General in New York, she made
international headlines when she was arrested by
US law enforcement for making false statements
on a visa application for her housekeeper. This
led to an major diplomatic problem between
India and the United States.

1)The government scrapped the controversial
deal to purchase 12 helicopters from UK's
Augusta Westland after allegations of unethical
dealings. Reports surfaced that two top

allegedly paid bribes to bag the contract.

Current Affairs: Jan 3, 2014 - :
1) Raj Jain is named Bharti Retail CEO. Bharti
group and Walmart parted ways after 6 years of
being in a joint venture.
2) SBI plans to set up an early warning system to
identify stressed loans. This move is aimed at
reducing NPAs.
NPA- NPA is a classification used by financial
institutions that refer to loans that are in jeopardy
of default. Once the borrower has failed to make
interest or principle payments for 90 days the
loan is considered to be a non-performing asset.
Non-performing assets are problematic for
financial institutions since banks depend on
interest payments for income.
3) Dhoom 3 has become Bollywood's highest
revenue grosser of all time. Directed by Vijay
Krishna Acharya.
4) Pune based Bajaj Allianz General Insurance
Company has launched an all-women's branch at
its headquarters. This is the first all women
insurance branch in the country

1)ISRO successfully launched the GSLV-D5,
GSAT 14 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in
Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. GSAT 14 is a
communication satellite. GSLV-

1) Vijaya Bank hopes to increase its CASA ratio.
CASA Ratio: It is the ratio of deposits in the
current and savings accounts of a bank to its total
deposits. A high CASA ratio indicates that a
higher portion of the banks deposits come from
current and savings accounts. This means that
the bank is getting money at low cost, since no
interest is paid on the current accounts and the
interest paid on savings account is usually low

1) Private sector lender Development Credit
Bank Ltd has been renamed and will now be
called DCB Bank Ltd. This change has been
made in the Second Schedule to the Reserve
Bank of India Act, 1934with effect from October

RBI said instead of levying penal charges for

customers, the RBI has said that banks should no
longer levy any penalty for non-maintenance of
minimum balances. The RBI had earlier asked
banks to reduce the services to customers who do

through a notification to banks, has said minors

may be allowed to operate the deposit accounts
independently, the central bank said. The RBI
