2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System
The illustration above is a schematic representation of the light oil liquid fuel injection system. The purpose of the liquid fuel system is to
provide a controlled quantity of clean diesel fuel oil at the correct pressure and temperature to the gas turbine engine. Control of the fuel is
accomplished with the fuel supply control valve N13-AA151 and fuel oil return control valve N53-AA151. These valves are
hydraulically actuated and electrically controlled by the fuel governor system. They also serve as emergency fuel shut off valves.
Light fuel oil is supplied to fuel injection system from the light fuel oil storage and transfer system, via a fuel change over skid package.
Fuel supply pressure at the inlet of the deaeration tank B11-AM001 is approximately xxx bars. The deaeration tank uses a series of baffels
to remove air from the fuel. The air is automatically vented to the fuel return tank by the auto vent valve N11-AA505. From the deaeration
tank the fuel is supplied to the inlet of two fuel injection pumps N12-AP001 and N11-AP002. Only one of the pumps is need for operation
of the gas turbine generator. The other pump serves as a stand by unit. It must be manually started, however. The supply piping to the
pumps is provided with nitrogen filled bladder accumulators. These are used to stabilize fuel pressure in the system during transient
operating conditions.
The fuel injection pumps are centrifugal pumps and are used to increase the fuel pressure to approximately 80 bars for delivery to the
sixteen fuel burners of the engine. This flows from the discharge of the injection pumps, through the re-circulation valves N11-AA051 or
N11-AA052, the fuel supply control/ emergency shut off valve N13-AA151 and finally ball type supply and return shut off valves N21-
AA01 and N22-AA001.
During a normal start up sequence of the plant, when a start signal is initiated at the control system all of the auxiliary support systems for
the gas turbine generator are started up and verified to be operational, as a permissive to continue the automatic start up sequence. With
regard to the liquid fuel system, one of the fuel forwarding pumps in the fuel storage and transfer system is energized. When supply
pressure to the fuel injection pumps is verified to be greater than 1 bar, by either pressure switch N12-CP001 or N12-CP002, the injection
pump is energized. Since the supply control valve N13-AA151 is closed, all of the fuel from the pump flows through the re-circulation
valves N12-AA051 or N12-AA052 and is returned to the fuel storage and transfer system.
As the engine is cranked up to and through 480 RPM by the SFC, the ignition gas system is energized and this establishes the ignition gas
flame wthin the two combustors. The ball type shut off valves N21-AA001 and N22-AA001 are positioned open at this time. Once the
control system verifies that they are in the open position, the supply control valve N13-AA151 is positioned to approximately 70 percent
open. Supply pressure is monitored by pressure indicating controller N13-CP102. A shutdown is initiated if the pressure is less than 16
bars. Fuel flow ( FIT ) N13-CF101 and supply temperature ( TIT ) N13-CT010 are also monitored.

2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System ( Continued )
As the SFC continues to crank and accelerate the engine, the fuel return shut off valve N52-AA051 is opened and the fuel return
control valve N53-AA151 is opened to the full open position at 540 RPM.
At 1,000 RPM the fuel governors run up ramp controller begins to time ramp the return control valve N53-AA151 towards its closed
position. The result is that less fuel is going to the return line and more fuel is being injected into the combustor, assisting in the
acceleration process of the engine. The return fuel flow ( FIT ) N51-CF101 and Temperature (TIT ) N51-CT101 are also monitored.
At 2,190 RPM the ignition gas system is shutdown. At approximately 2,520 RPM the SFC is de-energized and the engine continues to
accelerate using liquid fuel only to support the acceleration process. When the engine speed is approximately 3,000 RPM the fuel
governors speed controller logic takes control of the fuel return control valve from the run up ramp controller. The engine speed is now
being controlled by the speed controller, at operating speed.
When operating speed is achieved the automatic synchronizer logic is energized and the automatic synchronizer will adjust the
governors speed controller speed set point, as the means to achieve the correct phase angle match between the generator and the utility
bus phases. The synchronizer will also adjust the automatic voltage regulator's auto set point to achieve voltage amplitude match with the
utility bus on the secondary side of the unit transformer.
When phases and voltages are matched, the synchronizer will initiate a close signal to the main generator circuit breaker. If the
synchronization verification relays agree that the generator is in proper phase with the utility bus then the circuit breaker closes and the
control logic will step load the unit to approximately 20 megawatts. This is accomplished by the load controller reducing fuel return flow
with the fuel return control valve N53-AA151.
Because the generator is magnetically locked to the bus, the actual speed of the engine will not deviate from 3,000 RPM. Megawatt
output, however will increase, due to the additional torque on the rotor from additional engine mass flow.

2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System ( Continued )
During a normal shutdown sequence, the control logic will unload the gas turbine generator by opening the return fuel control valve N53-
AA151 and reducing the fuel flow to the combustors. At approximately 1.5 megawatts the control logic will close the fuel shut off valves
N13-AA151, N21-AA001, N22-AA001, and N52-AA-051, while simultaneously opening the main generator circuit breaker. The fuel
mainifold drain valves N31-AA401, N34-AA401, N35-AA401, N38-AA401, N30-AA401 and N30-AA402 are also opened at this time.
When the liquid fuel system is in operation a small amount of leakage fuel occurs a several of the fuel valves. This fuel is routed to the fuel
return tank, which is not shown on this drawing. Leakage fuel from the ball type shut off valves N21-AA001 and N22-AA001 is monitored
by pressure switch N23-CP001. If the pressure becomes excessive this is an indication of excessive fuel leakage and the gas turbine
generator is shutdown.
The fuel injection pumps for the system are provided with floating seals to prevent leakage of fuel oil. The seals are supplied with a sealing
medium consisting of a water and glycol mixture.

2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System ( Continued )
Fuel Change Over Skid
Liquid fuel supply from the light fuel oil, heavy fuel oil and crude oil storage and transfer systems are supplied to the fuel change over skid
for further distribution to the gas turbine generators fuel injection system.
The change over skid allows for the fuel source selection for operations. Light fuel oil flows through supply valve N11-AA101. Heavy
and crude oil flows through supply valve N11-AA102. All three supply sources are filtered. The return fuel from the fuel injection system
is routed back to either the light fuel oil storage tank or the Heavy fuel oil tank, depending on the position of selector valve N55-AA002.
The gas turbine generator must be operating on light fuel oil before heavy or crude oil operation is initiated.

2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System ( Continued )
Fuel Return Tank
The fuel return tank collects all of the leakage and drainage fuel from the liquid fuel system. The fuel oil flowing into the return tank first
flows through an air separator N60-AT001 that vents the air from the fuel and through an automatic drain valve N60-AB001 flows the fuel
to the return fuel tank.
A submerged pump N60-AP001 is used to automatically empty the tank by pumping the fuel to the fuel storage and transfer system. When
the tank level switch 60-CL001 detects level higher than 600 mm from the top of the tank the pump is started. If the level is still high after a
two minute period, an alarm is initiated by the control system. When the level becomes lower than 700 mm from the top of the tank the
pump is stopped. Level switch 60-CL002 is used to initiate a shutdown of the gas turbine generator if the tank level becomes to high. The
switch is also used to verify that a sufficient level of fuel oil is present within the tank, as a permissive for operation of the tank heater N60-
AH001. The heater is provided for heavy fuel oil operation and not for the light fuel oil.
The return fuel tank is pressurized with nitrogen N61-BB01. The nitrogen is used to blanket the fuel oil, thus preventing the formation of
an explosive mixture of fuel oil and vapors. The tank pressure ( PIT ) N60-CP101 is controlled at approximately 20 bars by pressure
regulator N61-AA151. If the pressure drops to 15 mbar for more than 1 minute an alarm is initiated. If the pressure becomes greater than
30 mbar, the control system will open vent valve N60-AA152. Pressure relief valve N60-AA193 relieves the tank pressure at 100 mbar.

2.3.8 Liquid Fuel System ( Continued )
Sealing Medium Tank
The sealing medium tank contains a sealing medium consisting of a water and glycol mixture. The purpose of the system is to provide the
sealing medium to the fuel injection pump seals to prevent fuel oil leakage from the pump. The system consist of a storage tank, two
sealing medium injection pumps, four shell and tube heat exchangers, to cool the sealing medium, and related system piping.
Sealing medium pump N12-AP011 supplies the sealing medium to fuel injection pump N12-AP001. Sealing medium pump N12-AP021
supports the N12-AP002 fuel injection pump.
During normal operation the supply pressure of the sealing medium is controlled by pressure reducing valves N12-AA161 and N12-
AA262 to approximately 26 bars. System pressure stability is ensured by the nitrogen filled bladder lined accumulators N12-BB012 and
N12-BB-022. When pressure switch N12-CP014 or N12-CP015 detects the system pressure is low the control system will start up the
sealing medium pump to recharged the accumulator pressure. When the pressure switch detects normal pressure again, the pump is shut
down. Level switch N12-CL-011 is used as the permissive for starting the sealing medium pumps.
Sealing medium supply to the fuel injection pumps seals is monitored for excessively low pressure by pressure switches N12-CP011
through CP 011 and N12-CP021 through Cp023. If two out of the three switches detect low pressure, the sealing medium pumps are shut
down and the gas turbine generator is tripped.
