requirestudentstoevaluateandjudgeanartifactseffect.Windsor(1990a)
and Perelman (1994) both note in their respective analyses of the dis-
course leading to the decision to launch the Space Shuttle Challenger,
theneedforissuesofvaluetobeincludedwithinengineeringdiscourse
and communicated within engineering communities. Humanistic dis-
course, like that asked of students by Wedgewood in his Philosophy
class,providesthelanguageandcategoriesforsuchdeliberations. Fur-
thermore, Miller and Selzer (1985) note that legal considerations have
becomeacommontopicofengineeringreports. AsVincenti(1990)ob-
serves, because designs have to conform to specific legal and govern-
mentalregulations,theclearandeffectiveinterpretationofthesedocu-
mentshasbecomeacrucialpartofengineeringknowledgeandtheengi-
neeringdesignprocess. And,aslawschoolshaveknownforyears,hu-
manisticexercisesinsummarizing,interpreting,anddefiningelementsof
textsprovideexcellentpreparationforformallegalreasoning.
DrawinguponcrucialdistinctionsbetweenAristotlesapproachto
deliberativerhetoricandthoseofthepurelypragmatichandbooks,such
as the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, Miller argues in her essay Whats
PracticalaboutTechnicalWriting(1989),thattechnicalrhetoricneedsto
bemorethanjustpracticalguidelines. Itneedstodevelopa praxis,a
mode of conduct, as well. An understanding of practical rhetoric as
conduct,sheargues,provideswhatateachercannot:alocusforques-
tioning,forcriticism,fordistinguishinggoodpracticefrombad(p.23).
Thatpraxis,ofcourse,issituatedwithinthehumanisticrhetoricofinter-
pretationandevaluation.
A Unified Rhetoric as a Common Framework for WAC
Finally,recombiningevaluativeanddeliberativerhetoricsestablishes
acommonframeworkfordiscourseacrossthecurriculum. Itallowsthe
humanists teaching engineering communication to validate the useful-
nessofboththeirowndiscoursestrategiesandthoseoftheirengineering
colleagues. Suchaframeworkprivilegesboththediscourseofdelibera-
tion and the discourse of evaluation and interpretation. Situating and
connecting both discourses within the rhetorical tradition will prevent
humanisticwritingfrombeingdevaluedasexercisesinuselessabstrac-
tionsandengineeringcommunicationfrombeingdismissedasthemecha-
nisticproductionofboilerplatedocuments. Instead,engineerscandis-
coverthatsomeoftheirowndiscoursepracticeshaveantecedentsinan
ancientandcomplextraditionandthatclassicalrhetoricoffersthemand
their students useful strategies for writing and speaking. Aristotles
