URBANFOCUS the newsletter of The Hermans ■ Campus Crusade for Christ ■ Summer 2009
In July Jose along with a number of other Compton United players gradu-
ated from high school! We have known Jose since he was 3 years old!
Miracles look different in different places. In middle June, we witnessed Jose walking @ graduation!
around 400 kids graduate from Dominguez High School in Compton. In a
city where dropping out of high school is not uncommon, we rejoice in these numbers, as well as the chance to see many Comp-
ton United players graduate.
We have realized what an important role soccer actually plays in this. There are only so many spots on a high school sports team,
but soccer is played everywhere. Being on a soccer team gives a child a place to belong, play safely, and learn how to work with
others. When that is a CU team, it also means they are pushed towards academic achievement and community service; they have
opportunities to develop their leadership skills. We chal-
lenge them to know God and grow spiritually. Together
all this works to keep them involved in something posi-
tive and out of trouble. It gives them a reason to do
well, making it much less likely that they would end up
in the streets and out of school. Thus far, we have not
had one active CU team member drop out of school!

William, Jesus,
At the end of August, we took a 7 day vacation, just the four of us. We traveled to Solvang, CA (the first Danish settlement
in CA) and had a great time enjoying the area, playing games together, and hanging out in the pool. Having that time together
as a family was priceless! We then spend two days camping with great friends from church and returned home right before
Sydney started 5th grade and Zach entered third grade. Time really does fly by! Both Syd & Zach again have great teachers
and we are looking forward to a great year ahead.

The ongoing mission of Campus Crusade is that “everyone would know someone who
truly follows Jesus.” That is ultimately why Compton United exists – to expose indi-
viduals to people who follow Jesus in hopes that they would come to be followers, too.
