TCM in British Columbia
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been legalized in British Columbia in 2000. Students may choose to be
enrolled in an applicable program of the College and write a licensing examination upon graduation to become
a registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac), TCM Herbalist (R.TCM.H.), TCM practitioner (R.TCM.P.), or Dr. of
Traditional Chinese Medicine (Dr.TCM.). For students planning to be licensed by the College of Traditional
Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists (CTCMA) in BC, two (2) years of liberal arts and sciences
(comprised of not less than 60 credits) in an accredited college or chartered/approved university acceptable to
the CTCMA registration committee will be required to write the registration examinations. Please see the
CTCMA website at http://www.ctcma.bc.ca/assets/les/pdf resources/Examinations/University
Requirement.pdf for more information.
At present, Medical Service Plan of British Columbia (MSP) covers 10 Acupuncture treatments per year with
other alternative care for qualified people. Each service will be reimbursed $23.00. On top of this, Insurance
Cooperation of British Columbia (ICBC), Workers Compensation Broad (WCB) and other private extended
medical care agencies such as Blue Cross cover acupuncture treatments.
This development is certainly beneficial to all patients who are looking forward to regaining their good health,
and it is also encouraging to those who wish to seek a career in this health profession.
