Obviously, I was ecstatic. When I won last
year, I didnt think I could feel

Its wonderful. It means a lot that people believe in
us that much, then take the time to essentially say that
out loud. I get a little nervous every
year around this time. We have
a lot of great jewelers in town,
locally owned and supported by
the community. Any one of them can
deserve this and I never assume it will be
us.
What do you feel sets your business apart
and earned you the distinction?
I think the number one thing we have
going for us is longevity. Weve been in the
community since 1956. We are fortunate to

have dealt with grandparents and parents and children. When its time for an important
purchase like an engagement ring or something they ask family wholl say, Oh youve
got to go to Ropers. Its an important component of who we are and our challenge is to
continue to provide that level of service so our current clients will tell their children.
What is your favorite piece of jewelry in the store?
That depends on the day. Maybe because I am surrounded by all of this beautiful
jewelry all of the time, for me to get gaga about a piece doesnt happen very often. But
right now there are definitely a couple of pieces I wouldnt mind taking home.

What is your reaction to winning?

I think because the Auburn
Home Shows have such fantastic
vendors, exhibitors and displays,
that they are the ones that deserve
the honor.
What distinguishes you from the
competition?
I think its a unique venue for Auburn. There
are other venues that are equally good, but
Im just very proud the voters recognized us.
Theres no other venue around that focuses
on the home. We have festivals, we have
parades, we have a lot of

activities, but were a regional event and we
bring in not only attendees but vendors from six different counties, and I think we show
off Auburn.
Do you have any kind of statement or promise to the people who voted for you?
We are a family-owned business, and we are all committed to maintain the confidence
that the voters placed in us, and we will endeavor to make each show a little better than
the last.
What is your favorite part of the shows?
My favorite part of the show is, when the show opens, I love to see the people that are
lined up coming in. Because I know theyre there to see the vendors, and I know weve
done our best to bring the people in to visit us.

Dingus Mcgees, which reopened 2 years ago after

nearly a decade out of business, has reemerged and is
taking Auburn by storm. The California Cajun cuisine
is unlike anything else in the area.
Basically were a steak, seafood,
and pasta house, said Dave
Nelson, owner of the restaurant
since 1995, We specialize in a
California Cajun cuisine. I think we
really hit more of the Cajun market up
here than anybody ever has.
The restaurant is not only very broad in
terms of food, but also in terms of price.
Our menu is very diversified price-point
wise, Dave Nelson said, Entrees start at
$9.95 and they go up from there. We try to

to a broad spectrum. We
dont want anybody to feel left out. If
youve got a guy making a million bucks
or you got a guy making $10,000 a year,
they can eat at the same table, which is
pretty important to us.
Today, the place that was once open in
Colfax, has opened where the Headquarter
House used to call home.
The headquarter house was the
restaurant that was here before, said
Devon Nelson, assistant manager and son
of Dave Nelson, It was open around the
same time as Dingus originally. Theyve
been closed for eight or 10 years. So its
kind of a good merger of two past entities
from this area coming together.

Even the old owners of the headquarter
house still come in quite frequently,
said Michael Scagliotti, Executive Chef,
Theyre really excited to see this location
be revitalized after being dormant for so
long.
For those who remember Dingus from
when Colfax was home, the food, even ten
years later, should taste the same.
The whole kitchen staff came back
after 10 years, Dave Nelson said, They
used to work in the old location and they
all came back after 10 years. So its the
same kitchen staff it was in the early
2000s.

I think, every year since the
category came out, its a huge deal
to us. We work for that every day
with every client, and it just feels like
a huge success when we win it. It really
does. Its a pretty big deal to me.

First off, we use legitimate, state-of-the-art
science in the cleaning that we do. Its very
different than what anybody else is doing,
not only here but even throughout

the country. The level of service I have
somebody in there 40 hours a week to answer the phone. Nobody is answering the
phone while theyre cleaning, that kind of thing. So we go above and beyond in terms
of service, more importantly, were really using current knowledge and science in the
cleaning that were doing so were creating healthier spaces, and thats really what I set
out to do years ago when I made this shift in the direction of my company.
Do you have any kind of statement or promise to the people who voted for you?
Other than thank you, were going to continue to work for that all year long, like we
did last year and the year before.
What is your favorite thing about your cleaning business?
I would say the research I do. I do all the research. We have a product that were
manufacturing, so thats been really fun and thats coming out this year. Its actually
being bottled right now, so thats fun. So were very innovative, were coming out with
a cleaning product, I do all the scientific research, I do all the training, I travel all over
the country. My job is fun.

I feel really fortunate to live in such a great town with
great customers, basically. It seems like our customer
base is mostly local people and people that we know
personally. Its just a good feeling to know that we have a
lot of good, loyal customers.
What distinguishes you from the competition?
I would have to say customer service. When customers
come in, they can actually talk to somebody. Instead of
just going and grabbing something out of the counter,
they can come into the meat marked for specific items
that a lot of other places dont carry but we do. Were also
available to talk to about cutting instructions, cooking
instructions and stuff like that. If anybody needs a tip
on how to cook a particular cut of meat, we have a welltrained staff to answer those questions.
Do you have any kind of statement or promise to the people who

voted for you?
Well continue to improve and do a better job at serving the community.
What is your favorite thing at Longhorn Meat Company?
My favorite thing is the interaction with the customers and being able to
supply a wide variety of meets. You cant go up to Safeway or Raleys to
go get frog legs, rattlesnake, exotic meats, stuff like that. Were kind of an
exotic niche here.

If you could work on any car, what would it be?

Toyotas. I know them inside and out. When youve worked on them for
so long it makes it a lot easier. I started working at Toyota in 1988-89, right
around the time fuel injection was coming in. All of the old timers were trying
to learn something new and for me that made it kind of nice for me.
What is the best part of your job?
I like that Im not doing the same thing every day. My grandfather had
Chiaratti Garage in Auburn, closed it down around 1973. Unfortunately I
wasnt able to take it over at age 7.

It feels great that the best quality produce from
our local growers is getting recognized. The difference
is becoming more appreciated because more people are
shopping locally at farmers markets and buying direct
from growers. Its all in season, picked at the peak of
ripeness, not shipped. The farmers benefit by selling
directly to customers. Its wonderful that more and more
people are finding out about it.

What do you feel sets this market apart and earned you the distinction?
It had been around since 1989. It was ahead of its time for the local food movement. There are
some growers still with us who have been here since the beginning. The community knows about the
farmers market in Old Town Auburn on Saturday. They can get produce, meat, eggs, flowers, honey
they know they can get it from people that they know, like an extension of their family.
Do the Wednesday and Saturday markets offer anything different?
The Old Town market is much larger and diverse than the one on Wednesdays at the DeWitt
Center, which has really high quality produce and vendors too. That one is in a park on grass with

you in, whether its firmness or price or size. Its kind of fun. Weve been
doing it for 20 years, and we plan to do it for another 20. We have a furniture
store now where our warehouse is, so that got lumped into the category, and
since its us, that kind of won by extension too. On its own, its a cool thing.

at what you do in the Auburn area?
Its very flattering and I am very
grateful for it.
What is it about your winemaking
process you feel may have earned you the
distinction?
I set out to make the best wine I can make.
The wine I want to make instead of what the
market will accept. Fortunately what I like is
what others like. Ninety-five percent is done
when you get the grape out of the vineyard. You
can be a good caretaker of it; there are certain
things you can do that distinguish it.
Tell us a little about the Bison Blanc
Viognier.
The whole family at Lone Buffalo
believes that in Placer County you
should be making wines that do well in this
region. It aint Chardonnay country. Its too
warm for really good Chardonnay. Viognier can
really excel in the foothills. In the eight years
weve been doing this, there has been a big
recognition in Viognier from people out tasting.
Ours is a blend of vines from two different elevations. Some grapes are grown at our
vineyards here 1,000 feet or more and some come from El Dorado County at about
2,600 feet. Viognier does something different at those two elevations. The higher grapes
produce a more flowery, perfumey product; the lower ones more rich and complex.
Blending them together gets the right mix.
You won gold (2011 Tatonka Tempranillo) and silver (2011 Where the Buffalo
Roam) at this years State fair competition. Tell us about those wines.
Where the Buffalo Roam is our flagship wine, we started out with it and it
consistently does well at competitions. It took gold at the Orange County Fair and silver
at the Chronicle Wine Competition. Its a very versatile Rhone style blend which goes
well with a lot of different foods and is good by itself. Blending is really where its at;
theres a lot more flexibility and year after year it produces a wine that is relatively the
same. You are more able to compensate for certain variables when you blend. I am a big
Tempranillo fan, I think its the coming red in the foothills. It can be a difficult variety
to deal with; in some ways it takes longer to come around and show its true colors than
others. Its an interesting wine that tends to be a little more earthy and rustic than our
other wines.
Thank you, first and foremost. This is not something we campaign for. We were
really excited when we were told about it. It is an indication that we must be doing
something right. We are very grateful.

What is your most popular dish?
Our General Chicken. For appetizers, our pot stickers are very
popular. People order tons of those. We have many, many dishes.

The fair, of course. I have to say that. Probably because I grew up
on High Street. That was the biggest attraction then in Auburn. Its
traditional to me.
