OHMACO is a company specializing in the management and delivery of occupational health, hygiene, safety and environmental monitoring and management services on a contractual basis in the mining industry. The basic services offered ensure that all statutory requirements are met in terms of relevant legislation. OHMACO also provides a comprehensive system of medical surveillance as a core service with reference to the mentioned legislation.
All services are rendered by dedicated and appropriately trained professionals at a fully equipped health centre situated centrally in the Mpumalanga Coalfield, between Witbank and Middelburg. This Centre has sufficient safe parking and easy access for busses and other public transport.
Customized supplementary services are also available in addition to the core service provided, to allow clients to surpass the required standards in a cost effective manner, based on individual client needs.
These capabilities allow OHMACO to minimize company and management exposure to the risks of related claims, while at the same time protecting the health interests of employees exposed to the inherent risks associated with the mining and other heavy industry.

Core services ( These services enables our clients to comply with legal requirements as a minimum standard ) :
1. Implementation and maintenance of an appropriate system of medical surveillance for all employees exposed to health hazards (Appendix 2) Section 13.1 & 13.2 and Section 17, MHSA; 2. Provision of duly qualified professional staff to accept and fulfill the statutory functions of the occupational medical and occupational hygiene practitioner in terms of the legal appointments Section 12 and 13 of the MHSA; 3. Electronic record keeping and storage of data associated with the system of medical surveillance Section 13.3.c and Section 15; 4. Electronic linking of medical surveillance data with exposure monitoring data (where this data is available from the client) Section 12.3. 5. Scheduling of medical examinations on behalf of the employer; 6. Conducting a baseline medical risk assessmentif this has not already been concluded; 7. Management of all claims pertaining to occupational injury and disease as defined in Schedule 2 of the ODMW Act and Schedule 3 of the COID Act. 8. Maintenance of the record of hazardous work for each employee with the assistance of the employer. 9. Assistance and advice to the client with reference to the investigation of an occupational disease Section 13.6 and 11.5 10.Immediate referral and reporting of employees for confirmation of diagnosis of detected occupational disease and treatment / statutory notification of employees with Pulmonary Tuberculosis which can be managed on an out-patient DOTS based system; 11.Customized occupational health information systems and support thereof, together with continual upgrading as a result of changing requirements. 12.Management and service provision of the occupational health of contract labour to the client. 13.Drafting and distribution of the annual medical report and other annual reports as per statutory and client requirements. 14. Provision of first-aid training as per the legislative requirements 15. Provision of generic induction training requirements as per the MHSA risk-based approach 16. Health, hygiene, safety and environmental risk assessments as per legislative requirements
2 Optional supplementary services (these services will enable clients to surpass minimum standards and position them to benchmark nationally and internationally):
1. Co-ordination of 24-hour Emergency services with a response time based on the clients geographical location; 2. Employee assistance programme administered by a qualified social worker; 3. Sickness absenteeism monitoring and management; 4. Provision of customer specific monthly reporting where this exceeds standard reporting already included in core services; 5. Audits to assure alignment and compliance to international standards such as the BS 8800; ISO 14001; OHSAS 18001; 6. Development and implementation of mandatory or voluntary Codes of Practice of actual issues such as TB / HIV management, Substance abuse, Incapacitation etc. 7. Provision or sourcing of accredited first aid training according to the Minerals Act and the requirements of the Dept of Labour 8. General advice on structuring to ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 (the MHSA); 10.General education / workshop sessions to educate on health and safety (general) 11.Specific workshops dealing with risk identification and assessment, preparation for inquiries 12.Management and supervisory training with reference to administrative penalties 13.Specific sessions on contractors and their incorporation into the mines systems (integration); 14.Drafting of general legal documents such as health and safety policies, legal appointment letters, etc; 15.Where required, preparation for and attendance at inquiries will be dealt with separately, so will preparation of representations in respect of admin penalties, appeals etc. 15.Executive medical examinations. 16. 3 Management and Employment Structures
OHMACO provide professional employment, consisting of various levels of professional categories. These categories include registered nurses, radiographers, training specialists, medical technicians, occupational medical practitioners, occupational hygienists, environmental specialists and administrative staff. New employees will be appointed as new contracts are obtained to ensure quality and levels of service are maintained. Provision is also made for continual improvement of our current skills base.
In addition to the above-mentioned categroies, OHMACO also has associate agreements with various other part-time practitioners. The following associate agreements are existing and operational: Electronic software (database) development provided by IT services. Pathology work related to diagnostic issues and substance abuse are provided by Ampath or Lancet Laboratories in Witbank and Middelburg. There is a contractual agreement to this regard between OHMACO and the laboratory. Emergency Medical Services are sourced by a private medical ambulance firm in Witbank, and also provide the administrative backup and medical liaison to effectively manage all injuries on duty, so as to minimize potential disability to the patient, and minimize loss to the client.
Facilities
Examinations pertaining to the system of medical surveillance will be undertaken by qualified personnel of OHMACOs fully equipped occupational health centre situated in Witbank. The centre is capable of facilitating all aspects of medical surveillance as per the attached schedule (Appendix 2), including electronic management of health surveillance data.
