General information
When fault tracing, select the symptom that best matches
the fault on the vehicle. Fault tracing must be carried
out in the order described in the information for each
symptom. This makes fault tracing more efficient by
systematically eliminating or documenting faults that can
be the cause of a symptom.
C2002642
Note: Chock the wheels and release the handbrake
before starting fault tracing.
Note: During fault tracing, the engine should be run at
the operating temperature as well as at the temperature
where the symptom occurs.

Carry out a test drive to ensure that the engine brake

performs within the specifications for the vehicle and
operating conditions. The VCADS Pro test 200363
Perf can also be useful for determining the engine
compression brake (VCB) torque for different gears
and speeds

Under certain conditions, pressure variations in the

air and exhaust gases can affect braking capacity.
This can cause noise or impaired brake torque. In
such cases, the pressure to the exhaust pressure
governor or the pressure in the exhaust manifold must
be checked to ensure that it is not unstable. Therefore,
the first step in fault tracing is to measure the pressure
to the exhaust pressure governor and the pressure
in the exhaust manifold.

Fault tracing
Temporary faults can be very difficult to trace, as the fault
may not occur at the particular time the vehicle is checked.
Fault tracing should be based on the drivers
understanding of the fault(s). The information that the
driver provides together with the factual data collected
should form the basis of how the problem is resolved.
Whenever possible, try to recreate the problem in an
environment and situation similar to that described by the
driver.
Note: Begin by determining whether anything has
recently happened to the vehicle that could affect the
electrical system, but which is not related to the engine
control system.

The engine brake does not start
In most cases, the reason for engine braking not working
can be due to a problem with a system that is a condition
for engine braking, such as vehicle speed, coolant
temperature, etc., see Specifications, Group 20 and
Engine braking, fault tracing (Check list O), Diagnosis,
group 2531.
Additional factors are mechanical or electrical problems in
components that affect engine brake function, including
exhaust pressure governor- or VCB related components.
Step 1: Fault code readings
C2002639
Active and inactive fault codes registered can show
faults, but can also be useful when tracing the cause
of the symptom. Freeze frames with information for
specific fault codes, can also be useful when searching
for symptom causes.
Fault tracing, using relevant service information,
must always be carried out for relevant fault codes.

Step 3: Tests
C2002640
The results of the following tests, carried out using
VCADS Pro, can show which systems or components may
be the symptom cause. These tests can also eliminate
components or systems with no faults or malfunctions.

25336-3 Engine braking function, test

25340-3 Temperature control function, test

27102-3 Accelerator pedal, test

28407-3 Sensor values, check

21006-3 Cylinder compression, test

Step 4: Component and function
checks
C2002641
The following checks should be carried out in the specified
order until the fault is found. These checks also can help
eliminate components with no faults or malfunctions.
The number of tests and the sequence depends on the
following: results from tests and fault codes, vehicle
condition, vehicle service and repair history, other
symptoms, and information from the driver.

Exhaust pressure governor, shutter

is free and has not become stuck in the closed or
semi-closed position.

Service Bulletin 7.05 200 257 01 7(9)
Poor engine brake performance
The engine brake torque is affected primarily by engine
friction, exhaust pressure governor brakes and VCB
brakes. Faults in these components can impair engine
braking.
The torque provided by the engine braking system
depends on the vehicles equipment and model year
This can give rise to the perception that engine braking
is not as efficient on a particular vehicle when compared
with another, see Specifications, group 20 and Engine
braking, fault tracing (Check list O), Diagnosis, group
2531.
Step 1: Fault code readings
