The South Quay Plaza: The new Foster & Partners Project in London

The Foster & Partners architecture studio, one of the top architecture firms in the United
Kingdom endowed by Norman Foster, is behind the South Quay Plaza project. It will be the
tallest residential building in the United Kingdom.
The South Quay Plaza will be built in the area known as The Isle of Dogs in the east of London.
The Isle of Dogs is an old island in the east of London in the London district of Tower Hamlets
and part of the Docklands in London.
The Isle of Dogs is known for harboring Londons financial district: Canary Wharf. But the
neighborhood is more than business and huge buildings. It is a maritime neighborhood, with
pubs and cafs with atmosphere, which makes it more special than a typical administrative
neighborhood.
To carry out the project, Berkeley Homes will proceed with the demolition of many buildings in
the area built in the eighties, which is aimed towards the regeneration of an area that
underwent a great development during those years. Urban planning identifies the need to
build at least 10.000 new homes in The Isle of Dogs and 6.150 in Millwall during the next 22
years.
Aside from the main building, the project also includes a second 36-floors tower, a small
shopping center, two office buildings, a leisure complex and sports facilities. The project will
have up to 950 new apartments, in addition to 4.000 square meters in commercial space and
2.000 square meters in office space.
The intention is also to improve pedestrian connectivity between Marsh Wall and Canary
Wharf.
Tower Hamlets aspires to offer a new pedestrian path through South Dock to Canary Wharf.
Because of this, the project plans to safeguard a piece of land on the far north of the area to
make sure there will be a landing spot for this bridge when its construction starts. On the

London is living an exciting time regarding new skyscrapers projects, as currently there are
plans to build more than 236 new skyscrapers (buildings 20 or more floors tall). The opposing
voices in this type of projects consider that these buildings suppose a break up with traditional
city planning, characterized by low houses and buildings, but the housing price rise in London
would be unimaginable if multi-story buildings werent built.
