I attended my internship at the Sydney Youth Orchestra, located on 182

Cumberland Street
in the heart of the Rocks. I first begun my internship on the 18th of March and
have been there every Tuesday or Wednesday from 10 - 4 (with the exception of
two weeks during the school holidays) The rest of the placement consisted of
production work, either at various venues where SYO were performing or at the
office loading gear the day before performances.

The first thing I plan to focus on deals with score and part preparations. This will
include tasks such as adding and amending bowing markings to various scores,
scanning original scores to the central database, photocopying and printing files
off the central system to file original scores in the archives, transcribing damaged
scores on notation programs, preparing packages for each ensemble with the
correct parts for each student as well as ordering new scores from the approved
SYO sources.

The next task I plan to explore deals with administration. This will involve
anything from filling out and chasing up students for tour forms, adding weekly
roll call data into the central database for safe keeping, adding events and
important dates to the office calendar and updating and organising the 2014
Audition requirements for the following year.

Production Work would be the last main activity I plan to achieve at SYO, which
will entail setting up rehearsals, pre and post show setting up, stage managing
during the performance, as well as ushering and other Font of House activities
(helping people down stairs, helping people with prams, printing/cutting/selling
tickets and general assistance)

An added bonus would be to explore the social media and marketing side at SYO.
While I'm not sure of the scope or the time I would have to do so, I'd like to see
how a full fledged organisation approaches social media, and whether I can
adopt my social media methods at such a workplace.

My strengths involve persistence (a habit which has been cultivated due to the
compositional lifestyle, I've done 20hr composition sessions before out of my
own volition) and a wide understanding and excellence with various
technological equipment and applications (including not limited to music,
spreadsheets and databases, design). I hope to use these skills to aid the SYO,
whether my persistence is required for repetitive scanning and photocopying
jobs or solving various technical issues with the various tools at my disposal.

While I have done minor production work, and have a sound understanding of
the orchestra and it's inner workings, as a composer, I've never worked in an
orchestral environment so I'll have to get used to some production based
concepts (setting up desks, general positioning of seats) and increasing efficiency
for such tasks. However, I'm confident that I will continue to improve the
production side of this internship as I continue to work at the various
performances.
