B. The Factors That A f f ect the A djustment of Children A re Not
Dependent on Parental Gender or Sexual Orientation.
Hundreds of studies over the past 30 y ears have elucidated the f actors that
are associated w ith healthy adjustment among children and adolescents i.e., the
inf luences that allow children and adolescents to f unction w ell in their daily lives.
A s one noted authority in developmental psy chology explained, based on the
accumulated empirical evidence:
Many studies have show n that adjustment is largely
af f ected by dif f erences in the q uality of parenting and
parent- child relationships, the q uality of the relationships
betw een the parents, and the richness of the economic
and social resources available to the f amily .
Dimensions of f amily structure including such f actors
as divorce, single parenthood, and the parents' sexual
orientation and biological relatedness betw een parents
and children are of little or no predictive importance once
the process variables are taken into account, because the
same f actors explain child adjustment regardless of
f amily structure.

(1) The q ualities of parent- child relationships
Research show s that children' s adjustment is af f ected by the q uality of a
parent- child relationship including attributes like parental w armth, consistency ,
