Thanksgiving o Thanksgiving Day es una festividad propia de los Estados Unidos de Amrica
que se celebra con carcter anual el cuarto jueves de Noviembre
Los orgenes de Thanksgiving se remontan al ao 1620(mil seiscientos veinte) cuando un
barco (el Mayflower) con ms de 100 colonos ingleses cruz el Atlntico para instalarse en el
Nuevo Mundo. Este grupo de pilgrims, de fuertes convicciones religiosas, se opona a las
creencias de la iglesia anglicana y al final tuvo que emprender la travesa del ocano para
escapar de la horca. Los peregrinos (pilgrims) se instalaron en el que es ahora el actual Estado
de Massachussets, concretamente en la histrica colonia de Plymouth Rock. Su primer
invierno en el Nuevo Mundo americano fue extremadamente difcil. Pasaron hambre, fro y
murieron la mitad de los colonos. En la primavera siguiente, ayudados por los indios
Wampanoag, aprendieron a sembrar maz, una planta antes ignorada para los colonos. Los
indios les ensearon tambin a cultivar otros alimentos, a cazar y a pescar.
En el otoo de 1621 fueron recolectadas generosas cosechas de grano, cebada, frijoles y
calabazas. Los colonos, como muestra de agradecimiento religioso organizaron un festn, que
los americanos han denominado histricamente as: The Americas First Thanksgiving. Los
pilgrims invitaron al Gran Jefe y a 90 indios de su tribu Wampanoag. Los indios llevaron carne
de ciervo para ser asada y pavos (turkeys). Los colonos (pilgrims) haban aprendido cmo
cocinar los arndanos y prepararon las diferentes clases de grano sobre vajillas desconocidas
para los indgenas. Para este primer da de Accin de Gracias, los indios haban llevado hasta
palomitas de maz. De aqu se desprende que incluso hoy da Thanksgiving and pilgrims sean
expresiones estrechamente unidas.
Las vacaciones de Accin de Gracias (Thanksgiving holidays) americanas comenzaron siendo
un sencillo banquete de accin de gracias en los tempranos das de las colonias americanas,
hace casi cuatrocientos aos. En la cultura estadounidense, Thanksgiving naci como un
harvest festival, es decir, una simple fiesta de la cosecha. De ah que muchos de los smbolos
de Thanksgiving tengan que ver con el mundo de las cosechas y de los campos en general:
calabazas (pumpkins), hojas de parra (fig leafs), o espantapjaros (scarecrows)
Sin los indios, los primeros colonos no habran sobrevivido. Para los pueblos indgenas de
Norteamrica, el Thanksgiving es tambin una fecha especial y sealada: ellos celebran por s
mismos o a travs de sus asociaciones, el llamado Natives Americans National Day of
Mourning (Da Nacional de Luto de los Indios Nativos Americanos).
Los americanos celebran generalmente el Thanksgiving como un da de vacaciones
(Thanksgiving holidays). Una especie de puente festivo oficial en el que trabajadores y
escolares disfrutan de cuatro das de asueto, en un ambiente prcticamente prenavideo:
jueves, viernes y fin de semana.

En definitiva las vacaciones de Accin de Gracias (Thanksgiving Holidays) son unas de las
ms populares y entraables en Norteamrica, y estn consideradas como una expresin de
gratitud hacia la divinidad en la que cada uno crea, con un sentido religioso y familiar, como
antesala de Chritsmas, a la par que histricamente patritico.


Otro hecho muy tpico en este da es bendecir la mesa con una oracin antes del banquete que
incluye el pavo relleno ("stuffed turkey"), las batatas ("sweet-potatoes"), la salsa de arndano
("sauce of cranberry"), el pur con salsa de carne ("mash with meat sauce") o el simple y
sencillo pur de patatas (smashed potatoes), el pan de maz ("maize bread"), la cebolla en
salsa blanca ("onion in white sauce"), la torta de calabaza ("cake of pumpkin"), los pasteles de
carne picada con frutas ("minced meat pastry with fruits") y un plato, que estuvo en el primer
banquete de Thanksgiving (en otra forma mucho menos elaborada que ahora) y que no puede
faltar en una mesa de Accin de Gracias que se precie: green bean casserole(o cazuela de
judas verdes) .


Una de las formas ms tradicionales y sencillas de bendecir la mesa en Thanksgiving es la
siguiente: "Bless this food, oh Lord. Thank you for your many blessings, this
Thanksgiving" (Bendice estos alimentos, Seor. Gracias por tus muchas bendiciones en este
