First Nation, Mtis & Inuit Education Association of Ontario (FNMIEAO) Presents
"Ishpi-Gikendaassowin" Higher Learning - Infusing Aboriginal Culture into the Classroom (K-6)
Learn how to infuse authentic teaching of First Nation, Mtis and Inuit cultures and histories into any K-6
classroom through cross-curricular modules that support traditional knowledge, oral history, and
Traditional and Comtemporary Aboriginal Arts as a way to promote student well being. Strong links to the
(2013) Revised Social Studies, History and Geography Curriculum will be shared throughout.

The workshop will focus on how to embed First Nations, Mtis and Inuit content into crosscurricular units that
focus on numeracy, the Social Sciences, balanced literacy, and the Sciences, by utilizing traditional and
contemporary Aboriginal Arts as triggers for student engagement. Aboriginal pedagogy that embraces local
traditional knowledge, respect for diverse worldviews, storytelling, and experiential learning will be modeled
and discussed. Participants will learn from the land, from provided resources, from circles and from the
knowledge of local elders. The primary focus will be on developing holistic units that meet expectations while
emphasizing the well being of students and creating responsibility for community and the natural world.

Participants, please bring the following: comfortable clothing and shoes, a water bottle and a backpack for
outdoor activities, curriculum documents for your grade level(s) and smart technology or a laptop (if possible).

Women need to bring a long skirt and clothing that is not revealing for ceremony.

OTF does not cover individual travel expenses, such as
mileage, gas, bus, train, etc. for summer institutes

Accommodation
Room: SINGLE Each room is equipped with a single bed, air-conditioning and in-room sink.
Washrooms are shared. Linens are provided. Free internet (Ethernet cable required).

PLEASE NOTE: Single accommodation ONLY available. At this site, your $50 registration fee provides you with
single accommodation without any additional cost. Single accommodation is defined as a single bedroom within
a dormitory building using a common bathroom. You may submit a request for a specific suite-mate.

Reservations: If you indicated at the time of registration that overnight accommodations are required, then
reservations will be made in your name for two nights (night of Day 1 and night of Day 2). If
you require accommodation the night previous, please indicate this on your registration form.

Meals
Day 1: Breakfast, morning break, lunch
Day 2: Breakfast, morning break, lunch
Day 3: Breakfast, morning break, lunch

Expenses of up to $40/day may be claimed for dinner on Days 1 and 2 (NOTE: alcoholic beverages may NOT
be expensed.)

Directions
Located at the University of Toronto St. George Campus, Victoria University is situated south of Bloor on
Queens Park Crescent.

NOTE: Museum Station on the Yonge-University subway line is the closest subway station.

Parking
Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking must be purchased first at Margaret Addison
Halls front desk, located at 140 Charles St W. (head north from Northrop Frye Hall until you reach Charles St.
W.). It is recommended that you visit their parking page for more information.
