1) Atlantic City Art Center and Historical Museum (A44) located on the boardwalk at New Jersey
Avenue on Garden Pier. Museum exhibits depict Atlantic City as a vacation playground. A 30-minute film

2) Boardwalk (A45) Atlantic Citys boardwalk may be toured by foot or bicycle (Chris doesnt think thats
wise, though). You can also ride in wicker rolling chairs which hold 1-3 people. Charges are around $5
for 6 blocks or less, $10 for 7-13 blocks, $20 per half-hour, and $35 per hour for two people. CHECK

NJ002 B Cape May (A50,51)
1) Gingerbread Victorian architecture (A50,51) is a recurring theme in Cape May, with a goodly number
of preserved residences causing this to be designated a national historical landmark in 1976. There are
guided tours, trolley tours, historic house tours, and guided walking tours also starting at the Washington
Street Mall. For tour information contact the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts at 609.884.5404. The Cape
May Welcome Center at Lafayette and Elmira streets offers brochures (for sale?) of self-guiding, walking-
tours.
2) Historic Cold Spring Village (A51) is at 720 US9. Its an open-air, living-history museum including a 20-
acre wooded village with 25 restored buildings. Allow 3 hours. Tues-Sun 10-4:30, mid-June thru Labor
Day.
NJ003 B Cape May Court House (A51) Cape May County Zoo & Park [Gem site], is off Garden State Pkwy
exit11 at 707 SR9N. Zoo is home to 250 species of animals. Many are rare or endangered species. An 800-foot
boardwalk leads to a 57-acre African savannah. Park open daily 9-dusk. Zoo open daily 10-4:45, late Mar-early Nov;

NJ004 B Clinton (A52) Red Mill Museum Village at 56 Main Street was built around 1810. Has a mill used for
numerous different tasks, displays from a 40,000 item collection, depict early regional life, agriculture, and industries.
There are other buildings on the 10-acre site. Allow one hour. Tues-Sat 10-4, Sun noon-5, Apr-Sept.; Tues-Sun

NJ005 B Farmingdale (A53) Allaire State Park is 1.5 miles west of Garden State Parkway, exit 98. 3,061 acres
has historic Howell Works, site of bog ore furnace and iron forge from early 1800s. Allaire Village has several other
buildings. Maps available at visitor center and museum. Pine Creek Railroad displays antique steam trains, 2 of
which offer 20-minute rides. Allow full day. Park open daily 8-4:30. Visitor center and exhibits open daily 10-4,

NJ006 B Flemington (A53) Northlandz is at 495 SR202 and is called the Grande Canyon of the East. The 16-
acre complex features one of the worlds most extensive model railroads, a 94-room dollhouse, a doll museum, a
music hall with three exceptional organs/keyboards, and an art gallery. The owner plays a different keyboard
every hour. Dont miss his demo! The Great American Railway is a miniature world of cities and towns, landscapes
including 35-ft mountains, some 115 trains, with 10,000 freight cars, and 8 miles of track. Outdoor trains rides are
offered, and food is available. Allow 2 hours. Mon-Fri 10:30-4, Sat-Sun and holidays 10-6. $13.75, over 61 yrs. =

NJ007 B Jersey City (A59) Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island [Gem site], is in Upper New
York Bay on Liberty Island, which is only accessible by ferry service, available daily form Battery Park in Lower
Manhattan and from Liberty State Park

in Jersey City, NJ. Visitors can take a self-guided or ranger-led tour of
Liberty Island. Audio tours that can be used on Liberty and Ellis islands are available as a part of the ferry ticket. Free
timed passes for entrance inside the pedestal are available but must be reserved prior to arrival on Liberty Island; a
limited quantity is available. A Flex ticket permits the user to visit the park once within 3 consecutive days. Only 10
people at a time are permitted to ascend the 393 steps from the main lobby to the crown platform. The walk is
strenuous and is not recommended for the physically impaired. The crowns stairwell is a tightly enclosed area and is
not air conditioned. There are security check points. A round-trip ticket includes stops at both Liberty Island and Ellis
Island. Picnicking is NOT allowed. Food is available. Allow 3 hours.

NJ008 B Millville (A62) Wheaton Village [Gem site], is off Wade Blvd and Village Drive at 1501 Glasstown
Road. The village is a 60-acre center for the art and history of American glass and glassmaking, regional crafts and
folklife. Allow 3 hours. Open Tues-Sun 10-5, Apr-Dec; Fri-Sun 10-5 rest of year. Admission to village facilities &

NJ009 B Morristown National Historical Park (A63) consists of 4 units, two in Morristown and two 6 miles
southwest including Ford Mansion (Washingtons Headquarters), Fort Nonsense, Jockey Hollow, and the New Jersey
Brigade Area. This location is not the same as Morristown.

Ford Mansion is at 30 Washington Place. Built 1772-74. Was Washingtons home during the winter of
1779-80. Entrance to the mansion is by guided 30-minute tours starting on the hour at 10, 11, 1, 2, 3, 4. Park

Washingtons Historical Museum and Library is at 30 Washington Place. Museum displays materials
relating to the 1779-80 encampment, historical objects, documents, and military weapons. Also 20-minute

Fort Nonsense is off Ann Street near Western Avenue. An earthen fort was built in1777 as a defense for
supplies stored in the village. Daily 9-dusk.

Jockey Hollow is 5 miles southwest of Morristown at junction of Jockey Hollow and Tempe Wick roads. This
was the site of the Continental Armys Hard Winter. See A63 for more details of the area. Allow one hour.

Arthur St. Clair 1779-80. Has a restored 6-room house with herb gardens and buildings.

New Jersey Brigade Area is 1.5 miles south on Leddell Road to Old Jockey Hollow Road in Bernardsville.

NJ010 B New Brunswick (A65)

Buccleuch Park, a 78-acre park at the north end of College Avenue, overlooks the Raritan River. Contains
house built in 1729 by a British officer. Birthplace of Alfred Joyce Kilmer, author of poem, Trees, is at 17

Joyce Kilmer Avenue. Each weekend in June and early July, 15 acres of nearby Somerset become a 1490s
English village complete with entertainment and craftsmens booths during New Jersey Renaissance Fair.

Rutgers Gardens is south on US1 from SR18, then east to 112 Ryders Lane. Dating to 1927, the 50-acre
gardens feature a diverse series of botanical collections (varieties are listed on A65). The Frank G. Helyar

NJ011 B Ogdensburg (A66) Sterling Hill Mining Museum is .5 miles south on CR517, .2 miles west on Brooks
Flat Road, the .5 miles north to 30 Plant Street. Guided 90 minute to 2-hour walking tour through the last
underground mine to operate in the state. Daily 10-3, Apr-Nov; Sat-Sun 10-3 in Mar & Dec. Tours depart 11AM and

NJ012 B Paterson (A66,67) Lambert Castle Museum is off I-80 exit 57, then south on SR19 to 3 Valley Road.
This 24-room stone mansion houses the Passaic County Historical Museum. See A67 for other details. Allow one

1. New Jersey State Museum [Gem site], is at 205 West State Street in the State House History
District. 3 floors of exhibits. Features archeology, fine arts, mastodon skeletons, full-size model of a

NJ016 B Union (A74) Liberty Hall Museum is at 1003 Morris Avenue A 50-room mansion built in 1772 and
expanded in the 1800s, fully decorated the house reflects a timeline from pre-Revolutionary era to the turn of the 20

century. Has 25-acres of grounds including carriage house and gardens. Allow 1.5 hours. Guided tours of house are

NJ017 B Weehawken (A75) Sightseeing cruise departs from the Port Imperial Marina at 1500 Harbor Blvd. The

NJ020 Camden (A95) Battleship New Jersey is berthed at 62 Battleship Place on the Camden waterfront. This
Iowa-class vessel is celebrated as the Navys most decorated battleship It served in WWII, KOrea, Vietnam and the
Persian Gulf. The 2-hour Fire Power tour offers an in-depth look at the ships weapons systems and the combat
engagement center. Allow 2 hours. Tours given every 15 minutes daily 9:30-5, May 1 thru Labor Day; daily 9:30-3, in

NJ021 Freehold (A115)
1. Covenhoven House was used as the headquarters of Sir Henry CLinton, a British military leader who fought
Geo. Washingtons troops. Located at 150 W. Main St., the building dates from the early 1750s and contains
period furnishings. The house is open May-Sept. Ph: 732-462-1466.
2. Outdoor recreation is available at nearby Turkey Swamp Park where camping is available early Apr-mid-
Nov. Ph: 732-462-7286.
3. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is 3 mi. west on SR33 Bus.Rte. One of the longest battles of the
Revolutionary War was fought here. Exhibits at the visitors center relate the conflict. Privately owned
Battleview Orchards, farmed by the same local family since 1908, are also on the grounds. Visitors may
pick their own strawberries (late May), cherries (late June), nectarines & peaches (mid- to -late-July) apples
(early Sept) and pumpkins (early Oct). No prices for picking were listed. Park open daily 9-8, MemDay
weekendLabor Day; 9-6, day after Labor Day-late Oct; 9-4:30, rest of year. Visitor center open Mon-Sat

NJ022 Hamilton (Mercer County) (A119) Grounds For Sculpture [Gem site] is off I-295 exit 65B, .2mi. west on
Sloan Ave. to Klockner Rd, south to E. State St., .8mi east to Sculptors Way, then .2 mi south to 18 Fairgrounds Rd.
The 42-acre sculpture park, built on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds, features three buildings,
each of which houses museum galleries whose exhibitions rotate seasonally with contemporary art sculptures. More
than 270 large-scale contemporary sculptures by AMerican and international artists in such media as bronze, wood,
stone and steel are displayed outdoors in both formal and naturalistic landscape settings. The park includes lotus
ponds, waterfalls, misting features, a water garden, bridges, a courtyard of Japanese maples, and many other
features. A Tree Tour brochure of 78 specimens is available. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Allow 1 hr. Open

NJ023 Menlo Park (A133) Thomas Alva Edison Menlo Park Museum & Tower is .6mi west of Garden State
Pkwy exit 131 to 37 Christie Street. On the site of Edisons laboratory is Edison Memorial Tower, designed to
incorporate the devices pioneered by the inventor. The museum, known as the birthplace of recorded sound, exhibit
some of Edisons early inventions and memorabilia. Allow 1 hour. Thurs-Sat 10-4. DONATIONS. Ph: 732-549-3299.
NJ024 Morristown (A137) This location is not the same as Morristown National Historical Site. Morris Museum is
2.5 mi. east of CR510 at 6 Normandy Heights Rd. Housed in the Frelinghuysen mansion at Twin Oaks, the collection
includes some 48,000 items representing the decorative and fine arts, costumes and textiles, natural science,
anthropology, mineralogy and paleontology. Most noted are the Musical Machines and Living Dolls, a permanent
exhibit that displays more than 150 mechanical musical instruments and automata, most dating to the 19th century. A
viewable storage area displays another 550 pieces. Other exhibits include: Dinosaur Den, Amer. Indian
gallery,minerals , rocks and mammals galleries, and costume exhibits. Allow 2 hours. Open Tues-Sat 11-5 (also
Thurs.5-8), Sun noon-5. Musical Machines and Living Dolls demonstrations are offered Tues-Sat at 2. Closed Jan 1,

NJ025 Newark (A154) The Newark Museum [Gem site] is at 49 Washington St. (at Central Ave). The museums
80 galleries exhibit collections of art representing ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome as well as Africa, Asia, the Pacific
and the Americas. Allow 3 hours. Open Wed-Sun noon-5. Closed Jan 1, July 4, ThGv and Christmas. Additional
discount w/ AAA membership card is indicated. $10 (includes Ballantine House; $6 (62+, children, college students w/

NJ026 Ocean Grove (A168) Ocean Grove is a family-oriented seaside resort under the leadership of the Camp
Meeting Assoc. of the United Methodist Church since 1869. Pop music, symphony concerts and cultural events, plus
religious services & programs take place throughout the summer in the 6,500-seat auditorium at 21 Pilgrim Pathway.
Organ concerts are given Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoon on a 1908 Hope-Jones pipe organ. Many of the
communities homes are in the Victorian architectural style. Their is a community historical museum and a tent colony
around the Great Auditorium, both of which are part of the historical societys 90-minute guided walking tour, available
mid-June through mid-September. Ph: 732-774-1869.
NJ027 Ogdensburg (A169) Sterling Hill Mine Tour & Museum is .6 mi. west on Passaic Ave from jct. CR517,
then .1 mi. past Plant Street. The entrance is on Passaic Ave. just under the railroad bridge. Visitors can learn about
the mining process during a guided 2-hour walking tour through the last underground mine in NJ. Stops include the
rainbow Tunnel: a 5,000 sq. ft mining history exhibit hall; and the museum of fluorescence. Also available are the
Rock, Fossil and Gem Discovery Centers, plus mineral collecting. Allow 2.5 hours. Open daily 10-3, Apr-Nov; Sat-
Sun, 10-3 rest or year. Two-hour guided torus depart at 1pm. Closed Jan 1, Easter, ThGv and Christmas. Phone

NJ028 Ringwood (A180)
1. New Jersey Botanical Garden is off Sloatsburg Rd. at jct. Sloatsburg and Morris roads in Ringwood State
Park. The 44-room Skylands Manor is surrounded by 96 acres of formal and informal gardens and more than
1,000 acres of native woodlands. Clarence McKenzie built the Tudor-style mansion in the 1920s and
collected flowering trees and plants form around the world to beautify the grounds. There are marked trials.
Gardens open daily 8-8. Guided garden torus offered Sundays @ 2, May-Oct. Woodland walks are offered
the third Sunday of the month @ 1pm. There are 45-minute tours of the manors first floor one Sunday per
month 11-3, Mar-Nov; phone for schedule. Garden & garden tours are FREE. Guided mansion tours = $7; $5

2. Ringwood Manor is at 1304 Sloatsburg Rd. in Ringwood StPk. Martin J. Ryerson began construction of the
manor house in 1807 on the estate once owned by Robt. Erskine, Geo. Washingtons mapmaker. Additions
to the 51-room mansion exhibit a variety of architectural styles. Many mountain-biking and hiking trails on the
grounds. Grounds open daily dusk-dawn. Grounds closed Jan 1, Christmas and Dec 31. Guided mansion
tours given Wed-Sun on the hour 10-11 and 1-3. Manor closed major holidays except MemDay, July 4, and
Labor Day. Because there are few staff members, call ahead to verify holiday hours & guided tour schedule.
