In 1998, the Peace Corps instituted universal
schistosomiasis antibody screening for Volunteers
completing service in endemic areas (Technical
Guideline 850). National control programs have
reduced or eliminated schistosomiasis in much of Asia
and South America, but the parasite’s range has been
expanding in sub-Saharan Africa.
