THE ST REGIS OSAKA
Opened in October 2010, The St Regis Osaka is the only
St Regis hotel in Japan. Combining classic sophistication
and modern luxury, the hotel is superbly located in the heart
of the city on Midosuji Avenue and within walking distance
of exclusive boutiques and major public institutions.
From the 160 luxurious guest rooms and suites with sweeping
cityscape views, to fawless St Regis Butler Service and
exquisite culinary experiences, The St Regis Osaka is the
most prestigious address in this vibrant, cosmopolitan city.
The hotel exhibits a distinctive charm by adopting interior
design that evokes the culture and history of Osaka and
provides a butler service that highlights Japans unique
and gracious hospitality.
Upon entering The St Regis Osaka, guests are immediately
enveloped by the tranquil space and tasteful blend of
Japanese design and Osaka fare. The harmony within
juxtaposes cleverly with the hustle and bustle of Midosuji
Avenue a symbol of urban Japan and designated as one
of the best 100 Osaka Green spaces in the city. The St Regis
Osaka has unequivocally brought the enduring legacy of
uncompromising luxury to Japan.

THE FLORIDA organisers
International Fine Art
Expositions (IFAE) have
teamed up with the French
dealer association Syndicat
National des Antiquaires
(SNA), organisers of the Paris
Biennale, to launch a Miami
fair in 2014.
Miami Art + Design is scheduled to
run from February 12 to 18, 2014, in a
new waterfront location in the Noguchi
Bayfront Park area of downtown Miami.
It will be promoted by David and Lee Ann
Lester and David Setford of IFAE, alongside
a committee from SNA composed of
Benoit Sapiro, Barry Friedman, Christian
Deydier and Robert Vallois.
American and European art and
design will be the focus of the new
event. Christian Deydier said: This fair
will be especially attractive to collectors,
architects, and designers from throughout
the United States and Latin America.
Miami is a vibrant, exciting city that has
become a major cultural meeting point for
the Americas.
The Lesters, who co-organised the
Summer Olympia fair in 2010 with Clarion
Events, have extensive experience of
organising fairs in Miami they founded
Art Miami in 1991, the Palm Beach
International Art & Antique Fair (now
American International Fine Art Fair) in
1997 and Art Palm Beach in 1998.
SNA, however, are known for
a more restrained, traditional
organising style typi ed by the Paris
Biennale, but are evidently looking
to increase their presence in the US.
They also recently teamed up with
seasoned New York organiser Sanford
Smith to co-organise the new Salon:
Art + Design in New York, which ran
from November 8 to 12 at the Park Avenue
Armory.
Although praised for its presentation
and quality, it coincided with the havoc
wreaked by Hurricane Sandy.

THE toast of Novembers clutch of
Asian art sales was not to be found
in London or Salisbury but in Leyburn.
Tennants posted a new house
record on November 16 when this
Chinese blue and white porcelain
bottle vase shot to 2.6m (plus 18.5%
buyers premium). It was discovered
recently by Rodney Tennant on a
routine house visit the vendor said
it had escaped damage when it had
been knocked over by the cat.
The magnitude of the
price was a surprise. While
the 15 (39cm) vase,
superbly decorated
in the heaping and
piling technique
characteristic of
earlier Ming period
pieces, carries a
Yongzheng (1722-
1736) mark to the
base, the auctioneers
had concluded it was
probably a copy from
the reign of Daoguang
(1820-50). Their estimate was
20,000-30,000.

Pilot sale sheds light on what
Chinese buyers do and do not
like among Western chattels
Roland Arkell
r e p o r t s
Above: Edwardian painted mahogany
centre table, RMB35,000 (3725).
A MAJOR new marketplace or simply a case
of wishful thinking? That was the question
as the Association of Accredited Auctioneers
(Triple-A) and their Beijing-based partners,
Huachen Auctions, held a much-heralded
auction in south east China on April 21.
With marketing support from Chinese
online bidding portal Epailive, Triple-A
had overcame substantial administrative
and logistical hurdles to conduct the
frst-ever auction of Western antiques in
a Chinese free port. The aim was to shed light on what
domestic buyers would stomach in
terms of both taste and price when it
comes to Western chattels. Would the
sale herald the embryonic moments of a
major new marketplace for English and
musical trophies and foral swags was not
untypical, selling to a Chinese internet
bidder for RMB35,000 (3725).
There seemed to be a strong appetite
for affordable mid-market pieces in the
500 to 10,000 range said Triple-A
chairman Chris Ewbank. He described
the venture as an unqualifed success and
one that has shown us clearly where our
future emphasis should be in China.
A full report from a ground-breaking
sale appears on pages 4-7.
Continental furnishings or suggest a case
of wishful thinking? It was no surprise that bidding for
this cross-section of Western taste and
collecting disciplines was highly selective
roughly three-quarters of the 360 lots
were unsold but the results included
some surprisingly high prices for mid-
market English and Continental chattels
in the 500 to 10,000 range.

centre table (above) painted with

Deal with Sothebys paves
the way, with hopes for frst

Anna Brady
r e p o r t s
TENNANTS spring fne art sale in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on March 15 began in a similar fashion to their autumn sale.
In the wake of the sale of a
Yongzheng (1722-36) blue and
white bottle vase for 2.6m
(plus 18.5% buyers premium)
on November 16, they
offered this 8in (20cm)
vase from the reign of
the emperor Qianlong
(1736-96) that sold to a
telephone bidder from
Hong Kong at 950,000.
Again it was deemed an
Imperial piece.
The vendor was an
Oxford academic who,
along with many other
hopeful consignors, had sent
photographs of the vase and
other Chinese porcelain after
hearing of Tennants earlier success.
His grandfather was Sir Francis
Stronge, who joined the diplomatic service in London in 1879 and served in Peking and in the supreme court in Shanghai, before living in Central America from 1897 to 1907.
The vase carried an estimate of
10,000-15,000 (auctioneer Nigel Smith opened the bidding at 1000), but interest before the sale had led the

TEFAF have announced that
they are in discussions with
Sothebys about the possibility
of launching a high-end art
fair in mainland China next
year.
Although details of location and exact date have yet to be announced, they hope the frst TEFAF Beijing, organised
via Sothebys Joint Venture and the state-owned Beijing GeHua Art Company, will be the frst such Western-organised fair in mainland China as opposed to Hong Kong.
It would also be a frst as a
collaboration between an art fair and an
auction house, more often seen as rivals rather than colleagues.
The announcement follows the news in September 2012 that Sothebys had signed a ten-year joint agreement with GeHua Art Company, part of the media conglomerate GeHua Cultural and Development Group, to become the frst international auction house in China previously they had held auctions in Hong Kong but were prohibited from holding auctions in mainland China unless they had a Chinese partner.
While Sothebys have clearly invested heavily in Asia, TEFAF have also made no secret of their desire to court the Chinese market. In September 2011, a team of TEFAF representatives visited China, organising a press conference and cocktail reception for Chinese collectors at the Dutch ambassadors residence in Beijing and a second event in Shanghai, to encourage more buyers from mainland China to visit the Maastricht fair.
