INTERNET A vast global communications network with billions of webpages. Internet refers
to a global computer network that provides a variety of information and communication
facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. It
is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business and
government networks. The Internet refers to a worldwide network of computers and digital
communications that allows users to access information from across the globe from a networked
computer. The term itself was coined in the 1980s, according to Merriam-Webster, referring to a
network that grew out of a 1960s research project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense
called the ARPANET, named for the Advanced Research Projects Agency that created it.

Internet is used for many activities which includes: researching, shopping, communicating and
distribution of information.
Basic Requirement for Internet
The basic requirements of Internet are :
1. A computer
A computer generally means a programmable machine. The two principal characteristics
of a computer are: it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner
and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).

Modern computers are electronic and digital.
The actual machinery wires, transistors, and
circuits is called hardware; the instructions
and data are called software.

2. Modem (modulator-demodulator)
A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device or program that enables a computer to
transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines.

4. Good Processor
A processor is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that
drive a computer.
A processor, or "microprocessor," is a small chip that resides in computers and other
electronic devices. Its basic job is to receive input and provide the appropriate output. While this
may seem like a simple task, modern processors can handle trillions of calculations per second.
Example : Pentium III, Dual Core, Quad Core
5. A browser software
A browser is a software application used to locate, retrieve and display content on the
World Wide Web, including Web pages, images, video and other files. As a client/server
model, the browser is the client run on a computer that contacts the Web server and
requests information. The Web server sends the information back to the Web browser
which displays the results on the computer or other Internet-enabled device that supports
a browser.
The two most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Other
major browsers include Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera. While most commonly use to
access information on the web, a browser can also be used to access information hosted on Web
servers in private networks.
6. Internet service provider.
An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides services for accessing,
using, or participating in the Internet. Internet service providers may be organized in various
forms, such as commercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.
Internet access is provided by ISPs that employ a range of technologies to connect users to their
network.
[3]
Available technologies have ranged from computer modems with acoustic couplers to
telephone lines, to television cable (CATV), wireless Ethernet (wi-fi) , and fiber optics.

List of Internet Connection

Analog Dial Up
Also called dial-up access, an analog Internet connection is both economical and slow. Using a
modem connected to your PC, users connect to the Internet when the computer dials a phone
number (which is provided by your ISP) and connects to the network. Dial-up is an analog
connection because data is sent over an analog, public-switched telephone network. The modem
converts received analog data to digital and vice versa. Because dial-up access uses normal
telephone lines the quality of the connection is not always good and data rates are limited.

Page 3
Typical Dial-up connection speeds range from 2400 bps to 56 Kbps. Today, analog has been
widely replaced by broadband (Cable and DSL).
A dial-up modem converts digital signals from a computer to analogue signals that are then sent
down the telephone line. A modem on the other end converts the analogue signal back to a
digital signal the computer can understand.

DSL Digital Subscriber Line
DSL is frequently referred to as an "always on" connection because it uses existing 2-wire
copper telephone line connected to the premise so service is delivered simultaneously with wired
telephone service -- it will not tie up your phone line as an analog dial-up connection does. The
two main categories of DSL for home subscribers are called ADSL and SDSL. All types of DSL
technologies are collectively referred to as xDSL. xDSL connection speeds range from 128
Kbps to 9 Mbps.

ADSL - Short for asymmetric digital subscriber line, ADSL is a type of DSL broadband
communications technology used for connecting to the Internet. ADSL allows more data to be

sent over existing copper telephone lines (POTS), when compared to traditional modem lines. A
special filter, called a microfilter, is installed on a subscriber's telephone line to allow both
ADSL and regular voice (telephone) services to be used at the same time. ADSL requires a
special ADSL modem and subscribers must be in close geographical locations to the provider's
central office to receive ADSL service. Typically this distance is within a radius of 2 to 2.5
miles. ADSL supports data rates of from 1.5 to 9 Mbps when receiving data (known as the
downstream rate) and from 16 to 640 Kbps when sending data (known as the upstream rate).

Cable Broadband Internet Connection
Through the use of a cable modem you can have a broadband Internet connection that is
designed to operate over cable TV lines. Cable Internet works by using TV channel space for
data transmission, with certain channels used for downstream transmission, and other channels
for upstream transmission. Because the coaxial cable used by cable TV provides much greater
bandwidth than telephone lines, a cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast
access. Cable providers typically implement a cap to limit capacity and accommodate more
customers. Cable speeds
range from 512 Kbps to 20
Mbps.

ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network
Integrated services digital network (ISDN) is an international communications standard for
sending voice, video, and data over digital telephone lines or normal telephone wires. Typical
ISDN speeds range from 64 Kbps to 128 Kbps.
An ISDN connection is basically a network connection between two systems that transfers
information over a high-speed telephone line rather than an Ethernet cable. Your Indy has the
appropriate internal hardware to support ISDN connections.
WIFI Wireless Internet
Wi-Fi, also spelled Wifi or WiFi, is a technology that allows an electronic device to exchange
data or connect to the internet wirelessly using 2.4 GHz UHF and 5 GHz SHF radio waves. The
name is a trademark name, and was stated to be a play on the audiophile term Hi-Fi. The Wi-Fi
Alliance defines Wi-Fi as any "wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on
the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards".
[1]
However, since
most modern WLANs are based on these standards, the term "Wi-Fi" is used in general English
as a synonym for "WLAN". Only Wi-Fi products that complete Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability
certification testing successfully may use the "Wi-Fi CERTIFIED" trademark.

sites, not only YouTube. It also acts as a YouTube Converter, where you can convert your movie
files into any number of formats, including YouTube to MP3, MP4, 3GP, MPEG and even
YouTube to AVI.
MP3 - MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard technology and format for compressing a
sound sequence into a very small file (about one-twelfth the size of the original file) while
preserving the original level of sound quality when it is played. MP3 files (identified with the file
name suffix of ".mp3") are available for downloading from a number of Web sites.
MPEG4 -: A graphics and video compression algorithm standard that is based on MPEG-1 and
MPEG-2 and Apple QuickTime technology. Wavelet-based MPEG-4 files are smaller than JPEG
or QuickTime files, so they are designed to transmit video and images over a narrower
bandwidth and can mix video with text, graphics and 2-D and 3-D animation layers. MPEG-4
was standardized in October 1998 in the ISO/IEC document 14496. See MPEG-4.

Page 14
3GP-This is a multimedia container format used by mobile phones. 3GP is a simplified version
of the MP4 format and was designed to make file sizes smaller so mobile phones could support
video.
There are two standards for this format: 3GPP, with the file extension .3gp, and 3GPP2, with the
file extension .3g2. 3GPP and 3GPP2 stand for 3rd Generation Partnership Project and 3rd
Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively. These were separate collaboration agreements
between several countries standardizing mobile phone formats. 3GPP files are for GSM based
phones, 3GPP2 files are for CDMA based phones.
MPEG - Short for Moving Picture Experts Group, and pronounced m-peg, is a working group
of the ISO. The term also refers to the family of digital video compression standards and file
formats developed by the group. MPEG generally produces better-quality video than competing
formats, such as Video for Windows, Indeo and QuickTime. MPEG files previously on PCs
needed hardware decoders (codecs) for MPEG processing. Today, however, PCs can use
software-only codecs including products from RealNetworks, QuickTime or Windows Media
Player.
AVI - Short for Audio Video I nterleave, the file format for Microsoft's Video for Windows
standard. A multimedia container format from Microsoft that has been widely used for video
playback in the Windows world. AVI was the first A/V format for Windows. Based on the RIFF
format, AVI is known as a "container format" because it is used for multiple encoding methods,
not just one. For example, AVI video compression methods (video codecs) include DivX, Xvid,
Cinepak, Indeo, DV and Motion JPEG, as well as uncompressed RGB and YUV2.
Windows Media (WMV) is a video compression format for several proprietary codecs
developed by Microsoft. The original video format, known as WMV, was originally designed for
Internet streaming applications, as a competitor to RealVideo. The other formats, such as WMV
Screen and WMV Image, cater for specialized content. Through standardization from the Society
of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), WMV 9 has gained adoption for
physical-delivery formats such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
