Dont Bother Me
It is difficult to talk about how children are raised these days. The question is how should
children be raised, and by who. For over several decades in this country there have been many
discussions and debates how children can be developed by a stay at home mother or a working
mother. The biggest problem that is faced in this country is the lack of time and attention spent
with your child. When mothers try to manage jobs or stay at home its important to have good
parenting skills and to teach the child good virtues.
How should children be raised and by whom are key questions. There is a debate about
stay-at-home mothers versus working mothers. (Newman). What is the stay-at-home mother? A
stay-at-home mother role is being married and staying at home with her children. She is their
companion, teacher, and nurturer, watching after them majority of the time. (Newman). What is
the experience of children with working parents? How do children feel about the amount of time
with their parents work and the amount of time that they spend with their children?
(Hand,Lewis,Tudball).
There are many different kinds of attention a child needs from a parent. This is why
some mothers think its just best to raise their own. In the 1997 National Study of Changing
Workforce, a surprising 50 percent of married working mothers agreed that it is much better for
everyone involved if the man earns the money and the women takes care of the home and
children. (Polatnick). A committed stay-at-home mother has a better chance to raise her child in
Martinez 2

a good, respectful, well mannered way. The childs benefits of being raised by their own mother
can affect the child in a good positive way or in a negative way. The good thing is that the child
would have a strong mother influence and can get too attached. The bad thing is for a child to
feel too over protected by their own mother. (Gelernter). The committed stay-at-home mother
has the best chance to proclaim her child each day as she feeds them, bathes, clothes them, and
reads to them, works with and for them. (Niemann).
A substantial body of research suggests that, on the whole, it is better for children if their
mothers stay home to care for them full time when they are small and after school as they get
bigger, than if mothers work and consign children to day care or nannies. A childs intellectual
development depends crucially on the amount of attention he gets from adults during the first
three or four years, and one would be hard-pressed to locate a day-care center where attention
is paid to children on anything like the level a full-time mother provides.(Gelernter).
There are some children who need more support than others. It just depends on the family
and the environment the parents want their children to be raised in. There are mothers who want
their children to be raised without all the bad violence in some schools. Its a way of keeping
their child out of trouble and to just prepare them for their bright future without any distractions.
Its the amount of time you teach them and show them. As a result a mother can play a big role
of development by staying home helping their child. As of today there are 5.5 million stay-at-
home parents in the United States.
Wait until later---Im trying to get supper ready. Please dont ask me any questions---
Im paying bills now! Dont bother me (Newman). This is what we hear from parents when
they are too busy. (Newman). U.S mothers have moved into the labor force in massive numbers.
(Polatnick). The reason why some mothers join the work force is because they are the only
Martinez 3

parent bringing in the money. Its not a bad thing to work and send your child to school or to
daycare. By the 1990s a broader discussion had developed about working parents and working
families with how questions and concerns coming to the fore. (Polatnick). The studies found that
women were still able to form strong connections with their children even when they worked
more than 40 hours a week. (Tucker).
There are many good opportunities a child can receive by going to school and having a
working mother. There are many children who are blessed with a talent and they should be able
to show other people what they can do. The only bad thing is that sometimes there is violence in
schools. The childrens development doesnt change as much compared to a stay-at-home
mother. Therefore the mother needs to communicate with their children and teach them right
from wrong. The main concern a working mother can have is how their child is going to grow up
to be. When children are raised by working mothers it just means the child will have to sacrifice
more.
Therefore each child learns and grows up differently at their own speed. The mothers
who need to work can still make time to spend with their child. The only difference is that the
children get help from more than one person. The good thing is having a mother who works
because its only helping the child grow up and being able to be independent later on. Therefore
going to a school and dealing with other people and different problems is going to help the child
with different situations later on when its time. Its good for children to be around other children
their age. As a result a working mother will always find time to support their child even when
they are trying to balance their work and home. A working mother just wants the very best for
their child by providing for them and making sure they have everything they need for a good
future.

The parenting skills are what counts in a childs life. Children have different needs that
vary with their temperament and developmental stage. (Hand,Lewis,Tudball). Parents differ in
their capacities to provide the different kinds of attention and interaction that children need.
(Hand,Lewis,Tudball). As a child is being raised there are times when there is going to be
excitement, drama, disappointments, tears and rewards. Its important to discipline the children
when they do something bad, and to reward them for something good. This is the only way a
child can decide from what is right and wrong. As a result parenting skills show how well the
child is brought up and how respectful and well-mannered he or she is.
Therefore there are many different reasons why children shouldnt be home schooled or
shouldnt go to regular school. Working parents are bombarded with advice about trying to
juggle, balance navigate or integrate work and family. (Polatnick). The issue of the relationship
between work and family life has largely focused on working parents and the stress that they
experience from balancing their roles. (Hand,Lewis,Tudball). Its not health for a child to live
with so much stress from school, teachers, friends, and parents. The issue is that mothers deal
with so much stress that it can affect the child in many different ways. A child has to go through
a lot of different changes in life just like mothers do. Its important to show the child how to deal
with stress and spend more time with them. This will help the child learn how to balance out
different situations at school and with friends and even at home. It is bad to show your children
navigate energy because it can bring them down and be a distraction from learning.
Therefore home schooled is also harmful to a child because it can isolate them. Home
schooling is dangerous; it is a threat to public education, it is anti-feminist, it isolates children, it
is a form of religious fanaticism, it is a means of avoiding diversity. (Packer). Home schooled
students are not always perfect, but they seem more respectful, attentive, mature and
Martinez 5

academically prepared than their peers. (Packer). A child can be hold back from many
opportunities and not know what it is like to be around other people. It will be hard for the child
to come out when they get older and it can set them back from jobs in the future. The child is not
going to be able to handle some situations that children in school have already gone through. Its
not just about the education its about being able to deal with other problems; its a part of
growing up. It would be a lot easier if the child would not be isolated from others who are trying
to grow up and learn the same things. As a result this is why it can be dangerous to a child who
doesnt know what it is like to be around peers and how to deal with different violence and how
to make decisions on his or her own.
The outcome of raising a child is all up to how they are raised. Yet many parents would
like to go out to work more, while others would like to spend more time raising their children.
(Adema). Women and men should be able to combine a meaningful working life with active
parenting. (Polatnick). It doesnt matter how children are brought up and where they live as long
as they are happy and healthy. All children are different thats whats special about them. The
best education however, will never wear out or be taken away from a child. (Newman).
Whatever are the circumstances, every mother wants the very best for their child. (Newman).
Raising children is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a person can
have, but its challenge. (Gelernter). The most important thing is learning how to deal with being
criticized about raising a child. When raising a child it gives a better view on things that are
really important in life. A good parent is a better leader. (Gelernter). As long as the child has a
good education and taught the right way to achieve greater things in life there is nothing wrong
with being raised different than others.
