Hebrew Verbs

Hebrew is a root based language. Every verb is based on a 3 or 4 consonant root


(!"#!, shoresh root). These letters form a skeleton around which vowels are
placed to form a complete word.

Binyanim

The patterns that dictate which vowels are placed and where are called binyanim ( ! !"!" ! ),
which means building (from binyan !"#$ [like the word ben !" : Hebrew for son, as a
builder of the house or family name]).

There are 7 binyanim: (Example 7J ~ infinitive: leechol 7J7)

! 1. Pa'al !"# - Active, Mild
! Example: to eat

! 2. Pi'el !"#$ - Active, Intense
! Example: he consumed or devoured

! 3. Hif'il !"#$% - Active, Causative
! Example: to feed (cause to eat)

! 4. Hitpa'el !"#$%& - Reflexive (subject acts on itself)
! Example: to feed oneself

! 5. Nif'al !"#$ - Passive, Mild (sometimes reflexive)
! Example: to be eaten

! 6. Pu'al !"#$. Passive, Intense
! Example: be consumed

! 7. Huf'al !"#$ - Passive, Causative
! Example: to be fed
