Development Manager

The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual to join its
Development team. The Development team cultivates relationships with individuals, corporations and
foundations and drives fundraising activities to ensure CEP programs have adequate financial resources. The
team works with the Board of Directors, Associate Board, President, COO, Volunteer and Donor Engagement
Manager and Program Directors to lead, create and implement successful fund development strategies.

The Development Manager is responsible for the implementation of solicitation and stewardship
strategies for individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Development Manager also maintains accurate
records of the agencys fundraising efforts. The Development Manager should be committed to the goals of
the organization and be able to articulate those goals and CEPs mission.

About Us: Local in service, national in voice -- the Center for Economic Progress is a nonprofit organization that
helps hard-working, low-income families move from financial uncertainty to financial security. CEP provides free
tax preparation, tax-related legal assistance, and financial coaching services that assist low-income clients in
accessing significant financial resources, improving their credit status and building savings. Annually, CEP staff
and 1,000 volunteers provide high-quality tax preparation and tax-related legal and financial services to over
20,000 clients in Chicago and surrounding communities.

Primary Responsibilites Include:
Implement a plan to significantly increase CEPs portfolio of individual donors through active prospect
research and effectively cultivate and build a portfolio major donors and prospects; leverage appropriate
senior staff members time in cultivating high-potential donors and prospects.
Work closely with Volunteer and Donor Engagement Manager in a variety of programs and initiatives to
bolster volunteer and Associate Board engagement in fundraising (via matching gifts, year-end appeal,
specific campaigns, etc.).
Manage correspondence with individual and major donors, including gift recognition and
acknowledgement.
Coordinate various aspects of event planning, including researching potential sponsors and soliciting
sponsorships in support of CEP and special events, primarily the annual Counting on Progress event.
Conduct full range of activities required to successfully prepare, submit and manage grant proposals to
Chicago-area foundation and corporate sources as assigned, including gathering information from internal
program personnel, generating application narratives and supporting documents, and engaging program
officers and facilitating site visits.
Review project/program budgets for which funding is sought to ensure optimal presentation to grant
makers.
Monitor progress of assigned grants; manage relationships with funders and ensure timely completion of
reports and other stewardship activities.
Conduct prospect research on foundations and corporations to identify and evaluate new funding
opportunities; assist Development Director with engagement of program officers and solicitation of
invitations to submit proposals.

Act as liaison between funders and program staff, ensuring awareness of grant requirements while
keeping abreast of programmatic needs, developments and outcomes.
Maintain electronic records of grants, donations and critical fundraising activities and generate related
reports.
Provide timely acknowledgement of grants and donations.
Pursue professional development opportunities. Maintain required job knowledge and skills and core
professional competencies. Actively participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.

Compensation: To the selected candidate, CEP offers:
Competitive salary commensurate with experience ($38,000 to $43,000)
Comprehensive benefits package (with some employee contributions) including medical, dental, vision
insurance, retirement, disability
Three weeks paid vacation the first year and 12 paid holidays
Flexible work schedule (37.5 hours/weeks); some evenings and weekend hours may be required

Professional and Education Requirements: A Bachelors degree is required, with demonstrated pursuit of
continuing education in the philanthropic sector. A certificate in Fundraising Management is an asset.

Job Experience: Two to four years of experience in development (fundraising/donor relations), including
expertise in fundraising research, writing, editing, and messaging of fundraising requests.

Special Knowledge and Skills:
Overall understanding and knowledge of the philanthropic community and funding cycles.
Proven track record with non-profit fundraising; demonstrated ability to conduct research, win
competitive grants, and garner individual donations.
Computer literacy and general office skill set required, including familiarity with word processing,
spreadsheets, database and Internet. Experience with SalesForce is a plus.
Knowledge and ability to think critically on public policy and issues related to family financial security
is a plus.

Physical Requirements of the Position: Flexibility in schedule, including evening or weekend work, may be
required.
