Dont you wish we could visually see the animated light bulb that turns on in our students brains
as they grasp new concepts presented to them? With the use of BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP in the
Pre-K classroom and upper grade levels we can achieve just that. By combining the use of our
SMART whiteboard technology already present on our campus with the BrainPOP program we
hope to present new content to kids in ways that they can relate to and be excited about. The
BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP platform presents information to students at school and at home in a
manner that is age appropriate, visually appealing, interactive, and fun.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1. STATEMENT OF NEED: Provide a thorough description of the needs this project will
address. Be sure to use any demographic, academic, survey, or historical data to support the
issue at hand and why it needs to be addressed at this time. Included also, the target
population, number of beneficiaries, and a clear picture of how things at the present state are in
need of change.

Our school would like to use BrainPOP Jr. for grades Pre-K to third and BrainPOP subscription
as a tool inside of the classroom during the regular school day, and also to provide it as a tool
for parents to use with their children at home. We feel that the use of the BrainPOP Jr.
program will encourage students to be full time learners as well as get parents involved in their
students education. In addition, it will enable our department to provide differentiated
instruction to all of our students thereby targeting the individual needs and learning styles of
most of our students. The BrainPOP resource is aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills (TEKS) from Kindergarten thru fifth grade, which will drive and lead instruction in the
classroom. Any TEKS that are missed or need re-teaching, teachers can give supplemental
assignments specifically by need to individual students or to the class as a review or assign
specific TEKS as homework assignments for extra practice for all content areas such as
reading, math, literacy, science, social studies, health, etc.

Since our school has not been designated as a full-fledged bilingual campus, our resources for
limited English proficient students and English as a second language are scarce. Many of the
lessons and activities that we have used in the classroom were teacher generated.
Additionally, our use of technology is limited due to the availability of resources in Spanish and
English. Students who are currently enrolled in the Bilingual/English as a Second Language
Programs is 9.1%, according to the Texas Education Agency. The ESL students will especially
benefit who are auditory learners for all text is read aloud to facilitate comprehension.
BrainPOP can be especially helpful to our teachers for introducing a new lesson or topic and is
also great for illustrating complex subject matter for all students, especially by providing an
educational opportunity for students who are At-Risk and Economically Disadvantaged, which
our campus currently has 19.02% At-Risk and 38.43% Economically Disadvantaged students.
BrainPOP is aligned to academic standards that features a great standards search tool

enabling teachers to easily align the content they are going to teach from BrainPOP with the
state standards that they are required to teach.

In addition, BrainPOP is a web-delivered, multimedia learning tool that delivers instructional
content using animation, graphics, audio, text, interactive quizzes, and games. BrainPOP Jr.
specifically targets children in Pre-Kindergarten through second grade whereas BrainPOP
specifically targets third through fifth grade. The BrainPOP program is based on what is often
referred to as the fundamental multimedia principle: information is more effectively processed
and retained when presented in words, pictures, and sound than in words alone (Mayer, 2005).
By taking advantage of the brains multimodal processing capability and capitalizing on the
draw of animation, BrainPOP enhances student learning. Unfortunately, our STAAR student
data indicates that scores in all grades have decreased dramatically in all subjects areas
including reading, math, writing, and science from 2012-2013. The great advantage that our
students will receive using BrainPOP is that it can greatly make an impact on their academic
learning, thus enhancing STAAR scores as well.

Furthermore, according to our campus comprehensive needs assessment as stated in our
Campus Improvement Plan 2013-2014, our campus needs to ensure that we increase rigor, be
consistent across all programs, increase alignment and rigor of academic instruction, increase
literacy in all academic areas, etc. BrainPOP is ideal to meet our campus needs that are stated
in our Campus Improvement Plan. BrainPOP is also ideal for both large group and one-on-one
settings in the classroom where learning can also be extended in a familiar and safe web at
home.

The Pre-K department and other grade levels plan to utilize BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP in
everyday instruction to introduce new topics, comprehension of difficult topics, and use it as a
form of pre and post assessments. Also, parents and students that have mobile devices at
home such as an I Pad, IPhone, Android Tablets etc., will be able to download the BrainPOP
apps for free and use our schools subscription to enrich their learning experience wherever
they go, making learning mobile and fun. Were really hoping to receive the help to subscribe
BrainPop and BrainPop Jr. for the 2014-1015 school year.

By May, 2015, 80% of campus teachers will successfully incorporate BrainPOP and BrainPOP
Jr. into lessons from August to May, that will be measured using teacher surveys and one will
also measure technology use at home using BrainPOP tracking software that is available to
the PK teacher/Project Manager to determine a growing number of students accessing the
resource from home to practice classroom topics.

2. OBJECTIVES OF GRANT: List the Goals/SMART objectives you want to accomplish with this
project and how you will measure these objectives to determine the impact of the project.

Ex: By the end of May, 2015, student book club members will have read at least 1 fiction novel
and attended at least 3 club discussion sessions, as measured by reading logs and club
attendance logs.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
3. PROJECT DESIGN: Specifically, how will your project improve, advance or enrich student
learning? How does this project support the districts mission of personalizing learning and/or
your campus plan? Include research as support for why you want to implement this project. Be
sure to include strategies to achieve the goals/objectives listed and research to support why
you choose to use this plan of action over another.
Our school vision is that students should be critical thinkers and lifelong learners, the
features of the BrainPOP programs such as leveled quizzes, games, and activities help
students develop inquiry and critical thinking skills. Earlier grades such as Pre-K
through 1
st
grade can use the program as a center rotation and classroom topic
discussion. Upper grades can use the program more specifically with all core areas and
as pre and post assessment of topics being covered. All grade levels will be able to use
the BrainPOP program as an anticipatory set or a review. NDAC (Neglected Delinquent
Technical Assistance Center) states that pre and post assessment is beneficial to
students and teachers: Pre-post testing is valuable to students because it illustrates
and documents their individual academic gain. Pre-post testing is valuable to teachers
because it allows for real-time progress monitoring. The BrainPOP program will
increase capacity to automatically assess student understanding in Pre-K through Fifth
grade classrooms without the use of formal assessment methods.

As stated in our campus improvement plan, GOAL 1: We will demonstrate sustained
growth in student academic achievement. OBJECTIVE 1.1: Improve, sustain, and
support academic student performance at or beyond grade level. We can take the
action to monitor and improve alignment and consistency of rigorous instruction and
assessment to the articulated curriculum in science, social studies, math and reading by
using the BrainPOP program. All interactive movies and features are aligned with the
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) which drive and lead instruction in a
classroom. Any TEKS that are missed or need re-teaching, teachers can give
supplemental assignments specifically by need to individual students or to the class as
a review. A progressive article on ed.gov discusses the effects of technology on
classrooms students, Technology is valued within our culture. It is something that costs
money and that bestows the power to add value. By giving students technology tools,
we are implicitly giving weight to their school activities. Students are very sensitive to

6
this message that they, and their work, are important. We hope to increase teacher
and student use of technology in the Pre-K through fifth grade classrooms. This will be
tracked on a continuous basis by Pre-K through fifth grade teachers by keeping a log of
how many times a week they incorporated technology into their lesson. Our current goal
is for technology to be used in the classroom at least 3 times a week.

Students can use the BrainPOP program at home to preview a topic that will be taught,
practice and review a topic learned at school, and complete activities in all core areas to
further understanding and knowledge. Students can also use this program as a safe,
reliable, educational website to use at home. The BrainPop program is educational and
entertaining for students. This will be measured using the tracking software available to
teachers that use BrainPOP, My BrainPOP tracks students movie watching history and
their scores on quizzes, including those created by the teacher. My BrainPOP also
tracks their work on activity pages. On select Game Up titles, students can take
snapshots of their play and then write a reflection on what theyve done or answer a
prompt. These snapshots are also tracked on My BrainPOP. The BrainPOP program
will increase student use of technology at home.

As stated in our campus improvement plan, Goal 3: We will create a welcoming culture
and climate for all stakeholders. Objective 3.1: Create a welcoming environment for
parents and community members to volunteer and participate in school activities. We
hope that parents will use the BrainPOP programs at home with their child, increasing
parent involvement and the use of technology at home. The U.S. Secretary of
education, Arne Duncan, commented recently at a conference, Technology can
empower parents, giving them a stronger connection to what their kids are
learning. We will create a survey for parents to take at the beginning of the year in
which they will be asked if they have access to technology such as: compatible phones,
tablets or computers at home. We will also ask how many times a week they sit with
their child to do homework and how many times a week their students engage in
educational play at home. Another survey will be sent out at the end of the year asking
the same questions and responses will be compared.

EVALUATION PLAN: Measurement of Accomplishments
5a. Re-List the Goals/SMART objectives you listed in the PROJECT DESCRIPTION/,
OBJECTIVES OF THE GRANT, section. Under each objective, list data to support how you will
meet this objective. Also, include an indicator of success for each objective. This indicator will
be proof that your objective has been met. If you are funded, please be reminded that you must
complete a mid-year and final report on progress.
By May, 2015, 80% of campus teachers will successfully incorporate BrainPOP and
BrainPOP Jr. into lessons from August to May, that will be measured using teacher
surveys and one will also measure technology use at home using BrainPOP tracking
software that is available to the PK teacher/Project Manager to determine a growing
number of students accessing the resource from home to practice classroom topics.
Pre-K through fifth grade teachers will keep a log of how many times a week
technology is incorporated into their lesson. Our current goal is for technology to
be used in the classroom at least 3 times a week. The indicator of success will be
the data showing increase technology usage on logs.
The tracking software will allow teachers to know which students accessed the
website from home, what dates and for how long. The indicator of success will be
the data showing increase technology usage at home.
A survey given to parents to take at the beginning of the year will determine who
has access to technology such as: compatible phones, tablets or computers at
home. We will also ask how many times a week they sit with their child to do
homework and how many times a week their students engage in educational play
at home. Another survey will be sent out at the end of the year asking the same
questions and responses will be compared. The indicator of success will be the
data showing increase technology usage at home.

5b. How do you plan to share the results of this project with Humble ISD and the Humble ISD
Education Foundation? Will you share this information with others (organizations, parents)?

10
We plan to share the results of this project with other teachers on our campus in efforts
to promote the use of the available resource in other classrooms besides just Pre-K. In
addition, we will share the ongoing progress of the project in our campus newsletter for
all parents to see. We will also write a narrative at the end of the project detailing the
pros and cons of the use of BrainPOP on the campus for the foundation, our district
program coordinators, and our campus administrators.

BUDGET
6a. List any matching funds to support this project. For example, if your campus, PTA/PTO or
other partners are contributing some of the costs for this project, list them here. Also, explain
how imperative it is that these funds be received in whole or in part this funding year. If there is
a partial amount that your project can be accept, please include this amount and explain how
the project can succeed without the full requested amount.

Two full school subscriptions to BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr. would offer all of our
campus students from Pre-K through 5
th
grade access to additional learning and
exploration time at school and at home. While this project can be implemented partially
to purchase BrainPOP Jr. totaling $ 1, 200, it will be a great resource but can only be
utilized by teachers and parents with students in grades Pre-K through second grade
only.
