EXAMEN DE COMPETEN LINGVISTIC - LB. ENGLEZA TEHNICA
Sesiunea Ianuarie 2011

Exercise 1: LISTENING
You are going to hear Andrej, a consulting engineer specialising in rail technology, who is talking about the TGV
world speed record. Listen to the talk and complete the table below about the modified TGV. Then, answer
question no. (6). You will hear the recording twice.

TECHNICAL CRITERIA MODIFIED TGV: % DIFFERENCE
FROM STANDARD MODEL

Maximum Speed (1).
Train Length (with coaches) (2).
Aerodynamic drag (3).
Diameter of wheels (4).
Motor Power Output (5).
(6). Why was the diameter of the wheels changed?

Exercise 2: READING
Answer the questions from (7) to (12), on the basis of what the text states or implies. Read the
fragment below and then choose one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D) for each question.

The television system camera contains all of the elements necessary to view a scene and generate a complete television signal. It
is only necessary to supply power to the unit and provide a means for routing the video signal to a monitor.
The television receiver is a familiar part of every television system. The receiver may also be called a monitor, though
common terminology associates the term monitor with a closed circuit or studio television display device that contains no provisions
for receiving broadcast signals, but rather relies upon a direct input of unmodulated video signals. Monitors are usually associated
with closed circuit television and receivers with broadcast television.
To generate a meaningful presentation on the raster of a monitor or receiver, some means is needed to synchronize the scanning
systems of both the camera and the monitor. Many cameras have synchronizing (sync) generators built right into them.
There is a wealth of additional equipment that may be used as a part, or in conjunction with a television system. Microphones,
audio amplifiers, distribution systems, video tape recorders, microwave relay links, lighting equipment may form a necessary part of
some television systems.
The use of television systems in broadcasting, education, medicine surveillance, data transmission, radiation, underwater
research, airborne applications, space programs are a mere sample of the many possibilities.

Example: (0) To what does this text refer?
A. School
B. Research
C. Television
D. Conflict
Answer: (0) = C

(7). In order to have a complete television signal, it is
necessary to:
A. have a camera and a monitor.
B. create the means for routing the video signal to the
monitor.
C. supply power to the unit.
D. have a television system camera connected to a
power source and provide the means for routing the
video signal to the monitor.

(8). Paragraph 2 is intended to:
A. differentiate between the meanings of monitor and
receiver.
B. describe the structure of the television receiver.
C. describe the structure of the monitor.
D. criticize common terminology which may be deceiving.

(9). According to the text, the television receiver:
A. is a closed circuit display device.
B. relies upon a direct input of unmodulated video signals.
C. may also be referred to as a monitor, despite common
terminology.
D. does not receive broadcast signals.

(10). Synchronizing generators are intended to:
A. be part of the cameras.
B. synchronize the scanning systems of several cameras.
C. synchronize the scanning systems of the camera and the
monitor.
D. generate a meaningful presentation on the monitor.

(11). What is implied in relation to the additional equipment
mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. it is very diverse.
B. it is scarce.
C. it can only be used independently.
D. it is always a compulsory part of
television systems.

(12). The final paragraph implies that:
A. the applications of television systems are restricted to a list
of domains.
B. television systems are used in sampling.
C. the applications of television systems should be
extended.
D. there are many possibilities of using television
systems.

Exercise 3: WRITING:
Write a short paragraph (8-10 lines) to describe one engineering domain at your choice.
Refer to its applications, recent developments and possible perspectives.

Exercise 4: ENGLISH IN USE (MULTIPLE CHOICE):
Read the text below and decide which answer [choose only one, (A), (B), (C)] best fits each space. For
questions (13) (18), give the answer on your answer sheet. There is an example given: (0).

Example: (0) Im sorry I havent written to you for so long, but I (7).... very busy lately.
(0) A. was being
B. had been Answer: (0) D
C. am
D. have been

(13) Pressure as we speak.
A. is released B. is being released C. is releasing

(14) Systems engineers the new prototype for almost a month now.
A. used to test B. are testing C. have been testing

(15) Aluminium is . than gold.
A. light B. lighter C. lightest

(16). If you had worked more attentively, the result better than this.
A. would be B. had been C. would have been

(17). He is looking . the reaction, because the temperature may be dangerous.
A. around B. after C. forward

(18). The information you gave me .correct.
A. is B. are C. arent
