Saint Joseph Parish Mission Statement:
The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed
Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong
leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships
with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church
family.

Notes from the Pastor - We are really blessed in so many ways these past days: the Easter celebra-
tion, the five of our brothers and sisters who were baptized last Easter Vigil, the beautiful and fun-
filled celebration of the anniversary of my ordination, our childrens first communion, the canoniza-
tion of Saints John Paul II and John XXIII, and just last Thursday the ordination and installation of
our new bishop Carl Alan Kemme!
I hope some of you have seen the ordination rite at EWTN or as it was streamed live online in the
diocesan website. The celebration started the night before with a solemn vesper it is the liturgy of
the hours or the prayers that the ordained pray daily and on certain hours of the day including that
particular hour the vesper. The vesper was especially concluded with the welcoming of the differ-
ent representatives from other religions and local government leaders. The following day was the
most exciting of all, the ordination mass. It was a long ceremony, yet very solemn and touching!
We started exactly at 2PM and was over at almost 5PM. But it was beautiful; every part of it is rich
with meaning! It was basically like our ordinary mass. The rite of ordination was embedded on it
after the Gospel reading. The details of the Rite is well outlined in Marcel Normands article in this
weeks bulletin. Each of this part has their own meaning. For example the seating of the bishop the
bishops official chair is called the cathedra which literally means the head, but being the head it
also means the teaching authority of the bishop over his flock! The Fraternal Kiss is a symbol that
Bishop Kemme is now part of the College of Bishops especially throughout the US.
The sight of all the bishops, priests, seminarians, and lay people are so inspiring. With all the
priests of the diocese are about 50 priests from Springfield, Illinois where Bishop Kemme is from. If
you can access our Facebook page, I have posted there the picture of the bishops who attended,

You have anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Last Thursday, May 1, was an eventful day for four of Fr. Rogers parishion-
ers who attended the ordination of Msgr. Carl A. Kemme of the diocese of
Springfield, IL as he was installed as our dioceses 11th Bishop. Most parishes
were allowed two representatives to the event-Girard sent Dr. Adam Paoni and
his wife, Girard Church manager Faith Paoni, while Pat Westhoff and myself
were the Arma delegates. The ceremonies began promptly at 2:00pm in the beau-
tiful Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, packed with men and women who
came from their various parishes in the 25 county diocese.
The procession of clergy entered the Cathedral as we all sang the entrance
hymn, The Churchs One Foundation accompanied by the majestic sounds of
the organ, drums, and other instruments along with the outstanding voices of the
Cathedral choir. It literally brought goose bumps to most of the congregation!
The procession began with the Honor Guard, 4th degree Knights of Columbus of
Wichita, then the seminarians of our diocese, our priests, deacons, many bishops
from other dioceses, the Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S. Carlo Maria Vigano, His
Eminence Francis Cardinal George of Chicago, Msgr. Carl A. Kemme, Bishop-
Elect, and lastly, the Most Reverend Joseph Naumann, Archbishop of Kansas
City, Kansas. When all were seated, Archbishop Naumann began the Mass. After
the Readings, the Rite of Ordination began with the Invocation of the Holy Spirit
followed by Msgr. Robert Hembergers presentation of Bishop-elect Kemme for
ordination. The Most Reverend Carlo Maria Vigano then read an Apostolic Let-
ter from Pope Francis, calling for Bishop-elect Kemme to ordination in Wichita
Diocese. The congregation voiced their consent for ordination with applause.
After this, Archbishop Naumann delivered his homily to all present. He ad-
vised Bishop-elect Kemme, When you feel overwhelmed, think of St. Joseph,
after hed been entrusted with the Son of God to protect Him and then learned
that he was lost! He continued, I used to think I was a pretty good Bishop until
Pope Francis came along! The Popes motto is Humility and has said, The
Church needs praying Bishops, as well as priests who love to be near poverty.
Archbishop Naumann said, Jesus died for us not because of our goodness, but
because of his goodness. Every Bishop is called upon to build up the Church
with living stones (the people). He admonished Bishop-elect Kemme to Love
your bride-the priests, nuns, and laity, who are the Church!
When he concluded the homily, Archbishop Naumann began the Promise of
the Elect, a short questioning period by the Archbishop where Bishop-elect
Kemme expresses his resolve to carry out his office with the mind of Christ and
of the Church. A magnificent sequence followed with the Litany of the Saints
framed with elegant background music from the choir. Following this, the Lay-
ing on of Hands began the essential rite of the Sacrament of Holy Orders where
Archbishop Naumann laid hands on the Bishop-elect, invoking the power of the
Holy Spirit, given by Christ to the Apostles. Other bishops present took part in
this section of the rite. Then we saw the Anointing of the Bishops Head, the
Presentation of the Book of the Gospels, and also presenting Bishop Kemme
with his Insignia. After he was seated, the Liturgy of the Eucharist began with
the presentation of the gifts and the offertory hymn. The distribution of Com-
munion had to be strategically planned, for there were so many to receive. The
two principal Eucharistic Ministers were two of our former Bishops, Michael
Jackels and Thomas Olmstead. It was good to see them once again. After the
Concluding Rite, we sang, Holy God, We Praise Thy Name while the new
Bishop Carl A. Kemme walked through the assembly and blessed the people.
Bishop Kemme addressed the people: I take the words from the 23rd Psalm and
made it my own: you have anointed my head with oil, my cup runneth over, for
I am filled with deep humility and devotion for my faith and my baptism, and to
the noble church of the Diocese of Wichita where I will serve, God willing, until
death. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice in it. Before dismissal,
Francis Cardinal George of Chicago spoke briefly, saying, Each time a bishop
or priest is ordained, it shows that Christ has not abandoned His people! After
the Solemn Blessing, we left the Church and went to a reception for the new
bishop in Good Shepherd Hall where food and drink were served and many of
the dignitaries also joined in the festivities of celebration. We met the new Bish-
op and also visited with many of the local priests from our area, including our
former paster, Fr. Lawrence Carney, who is now chaplain for the Benedictines
of Mary, north of KC and also working at St. Patricks in St. Joseph.
All in all, it was a day to remember and be thankful for. Pope Francis would
approve! Article by Marcel Normand

including Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, four Bish-
ops of the Diocese of Wichita gathering around the Altar
in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception: Bishop
Eugene Gerber, Bishop Thomas Olmsted (who is now the
bishop of Phoenix, AZ), Archbishop Michael Jackels)
(now archbishop of Dubuque, IA) and Bishop Carl
Kemme. Additionally, four other bishops who concele-
brated the Mass came from our diocesan presbyterate:
Bishop Ronald Gilmore (now retired), Archbishop Paul
Coakley (of Oklahoma City), Bishop James Conley
(Lincoln, Nebraska) and Bishop John Brungardt (of
Dodge City diocese). We pray for our bishops that they
will be faithful Shepherds to the flock.
Thank you to all who came to the celebration of the
anniversary of my priestly ordination. All who came were
having fun with the food and games, especially our chil-
dren! Thank you to Faith Paoni for organizing it. Thank
you for the support of everybody especially the Parish and
Finance Councils, the Anniversary Committee, the
Knights of Columbus, Altar Society and to Rick Duling
for the sound system. Thank you to CYM for their help in
almost everything especially with the childrens games. I
thank my friends from Chanute and Wichita who came to
help with the roast pig and Asian cuisine and presented
some of the Philippines native dances; also Filipinos
from St. Paul, Pittsburg and from surrounding areas!
The lucky winner of the over 3 feet statue of Our Lady
of Grace is Rose Axman from Wichita. She was present
during the drawing and she was so happy to win it.
She told me she whispered to the Blessed Virgin Marys statue
before the drawing that she would like to take her home. And her
wish was granted. Congratulations to her and thank to all who
give the donations. As of this moment, I think we have raised a
gross of around $3,500.00 from the free will donation and from the
raffle tickets. I will give the exact figure next week.
Thank you again and God bless you all! Fr. Roger
