GROWING CAREERS IN HEALTHCARE

Starting a healthcare career in one year
Seniors are projected to outnumber children by 2017 according to Statistics Canada, creating a demographic epidemic that will test the flexibility of our healthcare system. This will lead to a milestone where Canadians aged 65 or older are expected to reach 5.9 million or 16 per cent of the population by that year. There is a growing need for healthcare professionals to meet the demands of our aging population according to Curt Moeller, Campus Director at Anderson College. He also mentions many incentives are available to foreign trained professionals who wish to start a career in healthcare. These include government funding, internships, careers services and graduating within a year. So which healthcare careers are worth investing in? Here is a list of growing professions:

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) MLTs play a significant role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Duties include collecting blood or tissues from patients, logging samples and preparing them for testing. College graduates are eligible for certification through the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science and Ontario Society of Medical Technologists. Recent increases in healthcare funding have supported a steady demand for MLTs. Canadas growing population mixed with an aging demographic will help maintain demand for the next several years.

Electrocardiography (ECG) / Phlebotomy Technician ECG technicians are often the first healthcare professionals that detect abnormalities in the hearts chambers, arteries and ventricles. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients, obtain specimens and track a patients illness. Anderson College students also learn centrifuging, capillary puncture and laboratory safety in preparation for a rewarding career within a medical setting. Graduates will become familiar with best practices in blood collection and ECG procedure within this growing field.

Personal Support Worker (PSW) A PSW provides assistance with personal care to patients dealing with the effects of injury, illness or age. Working under the direction of a registered nurse, PSWs assist with personal hygiene, meal preparation and household management. Anderson College students are eligible to write the National Association of Career Colleges Certification (NACC) exam, which is included in tuition. The demographic climate in Canada presents numerous opportunities for PSWs, especially in the most populated areas such as Toronto.

Responsibilities include planning meetings, maintaining documents, coordinating projects, conducting research and providing information to visitors. Anderson College includes ECG/Phlebotomy in the Medical Office Assistant program, adding an additional skill employers currently seek. Demand has remained high and stable over the last several years, supported by both the public and private sector.

Physiotherapist (PTA) / Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) A PTA / OTA is a skilled healthcare provider who specializes in rehabilitative services to people with various mental, emotional, physical, or developmental impairments. Students focus on assisting in the development of treatment plans, assisting patients with therapeutic equipment, directing activity programs, and documenting the progress of treatments prescribed by an occupational therapist. The growing demand of non-traditional healthcare has created steady demand for PTA / OTA graduates over the last several years.
