Debra Moore LIS 773 Collection Development April 2014

This collection development project is intended to build the collection of biographies in an elementary school library. The school serves PreK through 5th grade. Biographies serve a number of purposes. For one, they are nonfiction texts which are a major standard in the common core. Students in all grade levels need to be exposed to informational texts with the nonfiction text features. Beginning in Kindergarten, the Common Core State Standards ask for increased text complexity. Beginning in first grade, the standards also ask for students to identify text features such as headings and tables of contents in order to locate key facts and information in a text. Biographies will also assist with the standards which ask for students to identify basic similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic. The materials that were selected will be used in classrooms, for lessons and individual student use.

Selection Process
In one of the common core standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.9 , Students will Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. (English Language Arts Standards CCSS) This standard spans across the grade levels. I focused on this standard when selecting my biographies by making sure to choose multiple titles on the same person.

I also had a focus on famous people in history and social studies topics. This addresses CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.10, By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 2-3 text complexity band independently and proficiently. (English Language Arts Standards CCSS)
I used a variety of resources to select my titles. First, I used two different book lists on biographies using booklistonline.com. I used another listing of fourth grade CCSS biographies on booksource.com. I searched the Scholastic website, and found a common core page that listed non-fiction texts. Finally, I used Mackin to search biographies for grades PK-5. Using all of these sources, I created a list of titles in Mackin.
