THE DEADLEST UNTOLD STORY OF THE 20TH CENTURY From the year 1900 until 2010 it is estimated that

building fires (predominantly fires in homes) killed approximately 630,000 Americans and injured about 3 million Americans. Also, it can be stated that a solution to building fires was developed during the 1860s and that there is data confirming that this system, even in a rather crude design, was better than 99 percent effective at controlling the early small fire and preventing fire deaths. Where loss data was best maintained (Australia/New Zealand) there were only 11 deaths within sprinkler protected buildings during a 100 year period. That was about one death in sprinklered buildings every 10 years. The question that must be asked is this: Why wasnt this near magical solution to fire deaths applied to virtually eliminate building fires and fire deaths? The answer is that during the 1890s the leaders of the fire insurance industry realized that if sprinkler systems were allowed to be installed in all buildings the profits of the fire insurance industry would dramatically decrease. Fire losses would drop so low as to threaten the survival of many or most insurers. Without fires the fire insurers would not have a viable business. So, during 1896 the insurers created the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to create enforceable laws to prevent the installation of sprinklers in nearly all buildings. The NFPA created codes that restricted the installation of sprinklers to protect only the major industrial properties. The large and high hazard industrial properties were so fire dangerous and produced such enormous losses that the insurers needed protection in these buildings to make them insurable. I believe it would be fair to conclude that the fire insurers and the NFPA were the key players responsible for probably at least 80 percent of all the fire deaths and injuries (due to building fires) in America during the 20th Century. I am in a unique position to discuss the regulatory frauds because I created the economical and reliable solutions that were denied by the code makers for decades. I created the first fire code that defined reliable fire sprinkler systems oriented to protect lives rather than just property. My Life Safety Sprinkler System often priced out at only one-tenth to one-fifth the cost of the NFPA code designed system. Because I created affordable protective systems that were very economical and extremely reliable, I witnessed the methods by which the fire club attacked those who would dare to interfere with the existing regulatory controls. Those who will follow my reports with open minds will soon realize the conspiracies and the corruption I report on are very real. Richard M.
