Who We Are:
The Build-A-School Foundation is a community of local people and businesses within the Brisbane area who have come together to make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged children around the world. Established by a local studentteacher, this not-for-profit is all about real people making real change. Based on collaboration and friendship, this organisation is supported by a wide range of people from all walks of life including university students, teachers, local business people and professionals.
What We Do:
The Build-A-School Foundation aims to achieve its purpose by raising money and educational resources within our local Brisbane community. Whether you are an
individual or a small business, there are many ways in which people can fundraise money for schools and educational organisations that truly need it. Short-term Goals: The Build-A-School Foundation, in its infancy, aims to run projects with the purpose of providing monetary and educational resources for already-established schools and schooling organisations in developing countries. Through fundraising and donation, The Build-A-School Foundation also supports school building renovation projects as well as other initiatives which contribute to improving educational outcomes for children in developing countries. Long-term Goals: The Build-A-School Foundation in the near future hopes to organise small groups of local Brisbane teachers to travel to developing countries to provide knowledge and skills training for teachers within communities in need. The ultimate, long-term goal of The Build-A-School Foundation is to build quality and self-sustaining schools in developing countries. [Please Note: Due to the incredible amount of human and monetary resources needed to proceed with such a large project, this realistically remains an achievable but long-term goal of The Build-A-School Foundation for the foreseeable future.] In of all the projects, The Build-A-School Foundation understands that it is vital that the recipient community is actively involved in identifying what is needed to provide the best educational outcomes, empowering the local people through the consultation process. The local people must be active and willing initiators of change in order to create a sustainable improvement to educational outcomes for that community.
The Facts:
In 2010, 57 million children (1 in 10 children) worldwide were not in school
1
In 2008, 796 million adults worldwide reported not being able to read and write 3
There is Hope:
Despite these disparaging numbers above, data tells us that more children than ever are going to primary school. Between 2000 and 2008, the number of out of school children dropped from 102 million to 60 million5. But since 2008 progress has all but stopped. Due to the unprecedented Global Financial Crash of 2007-2008, the world saw a massive reduction in aid to basic education, which fell by 6% between 2010 and 2011. Over the course of this time,

six of the top ten donors to education reduced their spending6. The establishment and continuing work of small organisations such as The Build-A-School Foundation are crucial in contributing to the development of education in areas of the world which still lack access to quality education for its people.

countries are those nations which have a lower living standard, an underdeveloped industrial base and a low Human Development Index (HDI) relative to other countries9. According to the World Bank 2012, developing countries are also defined according to their Gross National Income (GNI) per capita per year. Countries with a GNI of US$ 11,905 and less are defined as developing10. Within these countries, The Build-A-School Foundation is particularly focused on supporting girls through education as well as the development of education in rural villages where the likelihood of access to quality education is unlikely.
Why Education?
To put it simply- education gives people the skills they need to help themselves out of poverty and into prosperity. With education, people are better prepared to prevent disease and to use health services effectively11. Young people who have completed primary education are less than half as likely to contract HIV as those with little or no schooling12. Not only that, but with each additional year of schooling in developing countries, people earn 10% higher wages13. These earnings, in turn, contribute to greater national economic growth. Furthermore, education supports the growth of civil society, democracy, and political stability, allowing people to learn about their rights and acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to exercise them. Education empowers people.
