OF BRUNEI SULTANATE
EMBRACED ISLAM
Objectives:

• To briefly explain how Awang Alak Betatar converted to Islam

• To analyse how Brunei became an Islamic state
• know how the customs of the people in the past look like
• To briefly explain a beginning of Brunei Sultanate as a Muslim
State.
• To use the thinking, imaginative and understanding skills on how
Brunei established as a Sultanate

Procedures Materials

Step 1: Set Induction
Begin the lesson by helping students to Marker Pen
recall how Awg Alak Betatar and his 13
brothers founded Brunei. You may ask A set of cards with
students the following questions: pictures and explanation

• Who was elected as the leader of Blank / Fancy

14 brothers after they founded colored papers
Brunei?
(Answer: Awg Alak Betatar) Glue
• Explain the changes in Brunei
after Awg Alak Betatar selected Newspaper
as the leader.
(Answer: Brunei become very well-known in the Script
neighbouring country-trading activities)

This discussion will help students realize the

development of Brunei which led to the
attention from the neighbours countries i.e.
Johor

Step 2: Lesson Development

Brainstorming on general knowledge – ask
students what was the first religion of the
people in Brunei before the coming of Islam
(answer: Hindu)
Step 3:
Ask students to imagine how people convert
 to Islam and how the first Muslim ruler
converted to Islam. Teacher show the
picture of events conversion of Islam.
(Accept any anticipated answers and lead to
the process of how Awang Alak Betatar
convert to Islam)

Step 4:
Review the events that led the conversion
of Awg Alak Betatar as a Muslim and refer
students to the picture series in the
textbook and teacher use flip-card
(Pictures) to explain the topics.

Step 5: ACTIVITY
Role play will be the next activity.
 Get students to work in groups to
produce simple scripts (with guidance
from teacher) about the story of Awg
Alak Betatar converts to Islam and
costumes for their role play.
• Use other example as illustrate the mix of fact
and fantasy that can creep into these sources.

Assessment:
Arranging a set of cards into a series of explanation of how
Awang Alak Betatar converted to Islam.
1. Each student receives a set of cards and a fancy colored paper.
2. Arrange and stick the card consequently on to the fancy colored paper

Script for role play: The Story Of Awang Alak Betatar Became a muslim

Narrataor:
Under the leadership of Awang Alak Betatar, Brunei became very well-known in
the neighbouring countries.

Students: acting by acting activities such as barter trade among them.

Narrataor:

Therefore, Sultan Bakhei of Kingdom of Johore, sent his people ( messengers) to

Brunei inviting Awang Alak Betatar to Johore.

Sultan Bakhei of Johore:

I heard about Brunei under the leadership of Awang Alak Betatar.

Seem Brunei was rich and strong country….
So that…..
Beta so interested to invite Awang Alak Betatar to Johore….

Chiefs of Johore:

It a good idea.. Tuanku…

Sultan Bakhei of Johore:

Ok if all the chiefs were agree… Beta send our people to bring my invitation
letter to Awang Alak Betatar.

Narrataor:

The Johore messengers were travel by ships in Brunei.

Part II- arrive in Brunei

Narrataor:

The Johore messengers were arrived in Brunei and send the invitation letter
from Sultan Bakhei of Johore to Awang Alak Betatar.

Johore Messengers:

Ampuan Tuanku… we are messengers from Kingdom of Johore bring the

invitation letter fromSultan Bakhei.
Awang Alak Betatar:

…. I’m happy with the invitation…..

I heard about Johore is a peaceful country….
I like to go there and meet Sultan Bakhei of Johore…

Awang Alak Betatar:

My Brother…Pateh Berbai…
…I want you to join me to Johore…
You want???

Pateh Berbai:

I love it…. My brother…

Awang Alak Betatar:

Good…Good….
Arrange the journey ASAP…

Pateh Berbai:

Ok….Brother..

Narrataor:

The Journey began and they traveled by ship…

Part III:

Narrataor:

On arrival, Awang Alak Betatar andPaeh Berbai received a warm welcome and
they were taken to Sultan Bakhei palace.

Narrataor:

Since Sultan Bakhei was a Muslim.. he share his knowledge about Islam with
Awang Alak Betatar and Pateh Berbai.

Awang Alak Betatar:

…My Brother…Pateh Berbai…

… I’m so interested about…Sultan Bakhei Religion…

Pateh Berbai:
…Emm… You mean Islam?????..

Awang Alak Betatar:

…Yes….Islam….

Pateh Berbai:

…I’m also interested about Islam…

Narrataor:

Awang Alak Betatar and Pateh Berbai become a Muslims… Awang Alak Betatar
took the title, Sultan Muhammad Shah while Pateh Berbai named as Ahmad.

Furthermore, Sultan Muhammad Shah then Married the daughter of Sultan

Bakhei.

The conversion of Awang Alak Betatar as a Muslim is the beginning of Brunei

Sultanate as a Muslim State.
