MOTORSPORT: Christchurch
driver Hamish Anderson won
the NZ3 classication at the
Rally of Whangarei, but only
afer surviving a drama with a
broken electrical wire. Towards
the end of the second day of the
rally, he found that a wire had
broken o, and the only way to
avoid exclusion from the race
was for his co-driver Sarah
Brennan to hold it together
while he got the car over the
nish line. Anderson said the
Northland roads were the best
he had ever raced on.

BY ANDREW VOERMAN
AN OUTSTANDING team eort
saw East Christchurch-Shirley win
the National Club Cricket Champion-
ships in Auckland last weekend.
Te win was their second in four
years, and came afer they beat Wel-
lingtons Eastern Suburbs by two
wickets in the nal.
Afer dismissing Eastern Suburbs
for 135, East Christchurch-Shirley
found themselves in trouble at 34
for ve, when Ben Hanham joined
opener Tim Hampton-Matehe at the
crease.
We just sort of thought that if we
can get a bit of a partnership togeth-
er, we can get closer and closer, said
Hanham.
Hampton-Matehe was dismissed
ten overs later, with the score at 86,
leaving Hanham to guide the team
home.
Te key was we didnt lose wickets
in clumps there were always part-
nerships starting with whoever came
in, said Hanham.
Tey lost three more wickets be-
fore Hanham hitting the winning
runs, nishing 41 not out of 72 balls.
Hanham said the tournament was
a really good experience, and he was
pleased he could contribute at the
time he did.
It helped a lot having a few old
hands, letting you know what to ex-
pect on and o the eld, he said.
New Zealand under 19 internation-
al Leo Carter said the tournament was
a tough slog.
Six days (in a row) is tough, one
day longer than a test match, and the
intensity of playing a new game each
day is hard, but I think we coped very
well, he said.
East Christchurch-Shirley went
into Saturdays last round robin game,
coincidentally against Eastern Sub-
urbs, thinking they needed a win in
order to make the nal.
Tey were never in the match, los-
ing by 127 runs, and thought they had
missed their chance.
Ten they learnt there had been
an error with the net run rate
calculations, and they had made it af-
ter all.
Te teams captain, Tim Papps, had
to leave on Saturday night to attend a
family wedding in Fiji.
Carter said Papps, who has retired
now that the season has ended, was a
club legend.
Hes our captain, and hes been so
inspirational for us. Hes been a great
man for the club so it was great to get
that win for him, he said.
