Description of Divisions: There are many different divisions a disc golfer can be in, but there are two major classes, which consist of a Professional class or Amateur class. The way to determine what class you are in is based of the players rating which comes from how well you score and the difficulty of the course which you played. The player rating continues all year long giving you the average rating of the tournaments you played in that year. The professional class is broken into either men or women. And inside each of those groups you fall in a division by age. The Professional division is open to all ages young or old as long as you have a high enough rating. Then the rest of the divisions go in this order by age: master 40+, grandmaster 50+, senior grandmaster 60+, legend 70+, senior legend 75+, and grand legend 80+. The women divisions follow the same guidelines. The amateur class denotes a lower rating and is also broken down between women and men. The advance division follows the same guidelines as the professional division when it comes to age: advanced, advanced master, advanced grandmaster and so on. From there you have intermediate and then recreational. Those two divisions have no age classes. Figured World: A figured world is anything and everything that something happens in. If you put everyone lives on a stage the surrounding are is that figured world. There can be different rules and standards in each different area. How you communicate in these places could also change. It can be as big as the earth or as small as the house a person lives in or even bedroom.

For my assignment I will be observing disc golf. My figured world will be observing people playing in North Carolinas disc golf courses. There are two different types of people that play disc golf. The first groups of people that play are consider just casual players, that just go to courses as a way to be outside or are just trying it out. They follow very few rules of play, in general they count their stroke (throw) and thats about it. They will be talking, joking, and not watching where they place their feet. The second groups of player are individuals that play in tournaments and have classifications of skill whether that be professional or amateur. This type of player has many more rules that they have to follow in tournaments and that they will practice every time the go out and play. Some of the rules are if a person is throwing there should be no movement or noise being made by any individual. Your feet cannot move in front of a spotted disc unless the disc you are throwing has left your hand. The person furthest from the basket is always the first person to throw unless you are teeing off in which the person with the least amount of strokes from the previous basket will throw first. When no one is throwing it is fine to talk to everyone. So in my figured world of North Carolinas disc golf courses there are two different discourse communities casual players or skilled players that have a classification. When playing you fall into one of them.

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina Actors: Actors can be anyone that has a role in the figured world. They are the individuals that are making things happening and are doing stuff. Without these actors there would be no action. An example is if you taken a paint of a family or a person playing a sport the canvas you are drawing them on and in is that figured world. Now if you bring that painting to life as in a move that individual is interacting with that figured world, which makes them an actor. The actors in my figured world that I am observing are the disc golfers. Ken Climo: He is a national superstar in the world of disc golf. He has won the world championship 13 times in is carrier. David George: He is the shorter man that is wearing a white hat and shirt. John Beckwith: He is wearing glasses and a blue shirt. He has a very laid back and calm throwing style not getting upset about bad throws. Brandon Hill: He is wearing a red shirt and has a blue hat on. Michael Johansen- Has a ponytail. He has also won the Azalea Tournament the last four years in a row Jeremy Koling- he is wearing a white hat and gray shirt. He is sponsored by Prodigy. Barry Shultz he is the oldest of the player on the final card. He is wearing a red collared shirt and also has headphones in to block out und wanted noise. David Wiggins he is the youngest of the players on the final card. He currently holds the worlds long distance record for disc golf. JD he is a local player that has been playing on and off for about 10 years. John- he is a local player that is older. He just started playing within the last 2 years. Seth he just started playing about 6 months ago. He is still trying to learn how to throw and the rules.

Artifacts: artifacts are items that are making an impact on the actors in a figured world. These can be things such as basket of disc golf or they can be rules that govern how people act such as not talking when someone is teeing off. Basket: The baskets are the main focus in disc golf because that is what you are always going for. Innova: Is the brand of the biggest company that produces disc golf disc and items. When this company sponsors someone it is a symbol of that persons success. Out of Bounds: these are imaginary lines that are flagged in certain areas of the course showing players that their disc can not land there is they do it will be a one stroke penalty. Wind: Wing is a huge factor when it comes to play disc golf. Depending on the way the wind is blowing is how it will affect your disc and how you will have to adjust it. Discourse Communities: these are groups of people that have the same goal or they are doing the same job for a single purpose. The Players: These are the people that actually play in the tournament, Ken, John, Dave, and Brandon. They are all competing for the top prize.

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina The Spotters: These individuals are placed in areas that cannot be seen by the player and also will determine is a shot is out of bounds or not. They typically are players themselves but do not play in that division. Spectators: They are the ones watching the event. Usually they are either fellow disc golfers wanting to see pros playing or they know the person playing. These people usually only gather near players with national recognition such as Ken Climo.

Literacy Practices: This is the way actors communicate with each other or how discourse communities communicate with each other. It could be verbal or it can be non-verbal. Also verbal could be sounds as well not just actual words such as clapping if a player has a nice shot the spectators will clap in approval. Order of Throwing: The player that has their disc the furthest away from the basket is the one who throws first. Spotters Flags: The spotter holds a red flag and a green flag, because of there distance from the players instead of yelling the green flag signals that they are in bound and safe, while the red flag means they are out of bounds or they disc is unplayable. Hand Shake: it is a common custom to shake hands with everyone on your card when the round starts and also right before everyone tees off on there last hole. Observation One Sunday, January 26, 2014 Time: 7:00PM-7:31PM Note: This observation is through a video posted to youtube of the first round at the US Master disc golf tournament. The time of this video is just over 30 minutes long but it covers about a two and a half hour period of play. All this video is showing are the actual event and actions during the event not the time between shots. Information about Tournament: This tournament is the US Masters. It is played in a different location every year but this past year it was played at Cedarock Park in Burlington NC. This tournament is different in the aspect that it is only for older players. The master in the name is denoting what divisions can play in this tournament. It was founded in honor of Tim Selinske. He was an individual that greatly impacted the sport of disc golf, as we know it today.

7:00 PM The players are coming up to the tee pad on the first whole. As each player comes up there name is announced and then it gets very quite so they can throw. There is not a sound when someone is throwing. When players that have more recognition names, such as Ken and Dave, get announced they get a bigger cheer from the spectators. 7:04 PM John makes a bad throw which as soon as he releases it he knows that it is bad. He makes some negative noise and walks away not watching where it lands.

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina 7:08 PM Ken Climo makes is first birdie put. He makes a comment as that he finally sank a put. The crowd does not cheer or make any comments about it because there is a high expectation that he should always make them. 7:09 PM The players are talking to the disc in mid air in the hopes it will make there throw better 7:13 PM Hole 7 is being played. It is a shorter whole then the rest and all of the players make it in two shots 7:16 PM George has to make a put from the kneeling position. This is acceptable as long as he is being the marker and is in the 3-meter rule. This gets some cheers because it is a difficult putting stance. 7:19 PM There is a spotter on hole 12 because the players cannot see around the tree line. The spotter is showing red or green as soon as the disc falls. He also marks where the disc went out of bounds at. 7:31 PM The final scores of the round are shown. This will determine whom and where each player will go for there next round. Ken Climo is in the lead. Observation Two Tuesday, January 30, 2014 Time: 6:00 PM - 6:31 PM Note: This observation is through two videos posted to youtube of the final round of the 2013 Azalea Tournament. The time of this video is just over 30 minutes long but it covers about a two and a half hour period of play. All this video is showing are the actual event and actions during the event not the time between shots. Information About Tournament : The Azalea tournament is played every year in Wilmington NC. It has been around for a couple of years now and is actually so big that there are two separate tournaments. There is a all amateur weekend and then there is also an all professional weekend. This observation is of the professional weekend and the final round of the top four players. 6:01 PM Tee of at whole one. The order is by lowest score to highest, so the order of tee of in Johansen, Koling, Shultz, and Wiggins. 6:05 PM Johansen comment one how the wind isnt helping the disc meaning that the wind is affecting the normal flight pattern. 6:06 PM - Koling threw out of bounds. There is a discussion of where to place the disc, there was no spotter there so it was a group decision on where it should be placed. 6:07 PM Shultz and Koling made birdie putts. (One throw under par) Shultz made a very long putt so everyone is congratulating him.

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina 6:09 PM Shultz hits a tree right in font of the tee pad. He is not happy about it. 6:11 PM Wiggin make a huge Eagle putt. (two throws under par) Everyone cheered 6:14 PM On hole 9 everyone on the card makes a birdie, which is also known as star birdie 6:18 PM Wiggins talks to the disc in mid air. This is a common thing to do among disc golfers. 6:21 PM Koling has to throw from a knee because they tree branches are to low for a normal stance. 6:25 PM The wind is really bad right now and all of them are trying to figure out how to throw. It is really affecting the flight pattern of the disc. 6:28 PM it is the last whole and the players shake each others hand before their last tee off. This is not required but a very common practice. Observation Three Sunday, February 2, 2014 Time: 10:30 AM 1:10PM Note: These players are playing at a park in Charlotte called Sugar Creek. It is a casual game. The started on hole 12 instead of hole 1 10:30 AM - Seth, JD, and John shake hand and wish each other luck and tee off. There is no particular order so they make an order.

10:40 AM - Seth has a bad throw on hole 13. He then makes another bad throw and hits a tree this make him mad and he throws his bag. The other players are telling him to relax and have fun. 10:56 AM - John makes a birdie putt from a long distance out on hole 15. He then went on to talk about that being the best he had ever played that hole. 11:01 AM - JD makes a great throw on hole 16, the basket is on the left side of the fairway. He is a left-handed player so it works out for him. 11:15 AM - On the way to hole 18 everyone is asking for advice in there throwing stance. Seth is the newest player so he is trying to get advice on what he is doing wrong and how he could improve. 11:28 AM - Everyone makes a par on hole 1.

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina 11:39 AM - JD hits a tree right off the tee pad and makes the disc fly into a different fairway. He has to play from where the disc is laying so he throw the disc end over end to try and get it threw the thick brush that is between the two fairways. 11:55 Am - Seth hits a tree on hole 4 and it makes the disc fly into the road with is out of bounds. He places the disc where it went out and throws from there. 12:09 PM - John comments on how well everyone threw on hole 5. He is even talking while other players are putting and while he was putting. 12:20 PM - John hits a tree branch right in front of the tee pad. It makes his disc pop straight into the air and land about 60 feet in front of him. He said he has never hit the branch before. 12:31 PM - JD has a perfect throw on hole 8 everyone is cheering on how well he did. The next throw he almost made a birdie but hit the top of the basket. Everyone talks about how amazing the shot was. 12:42 PM - There is a tree on hole 9 that it is mandatory that all players throw to the left of the tree. John did not make it around the tree so he had to throw from a drop zone, which is right by that tree. That also means he had to add a stroke to his score. 12:50 PM - The wind is picking up on hole 10 and everyone is discussing how they should throw. They watch each other throw and determine what it is doing to the flight pattern of the disc. John is the last one to throw and he cant decided on what disc to throw. 1:02 PM - The last hole everyone shake each other hands and again have to deal with the wind. John makes a comment that he is happy it is the last hole because of the wind.

Interview One With Jason T Clark

1. What made you start playing disc golf?

Assignment One Disc Golf In North Carolina A) I was actually had been skateboarding for 12 years and one day at a park I ended up breaking my collarbone. Well I didnt have any insurance so I had to pay for the doctors out of pocket. I was getting older and about to get married and I realized I could not keep getting hurt so I laid down my skate board. One of my buddies that I served with was sick of me being a bum and bought some disc and took me out to play and I havent stopped since. 2. When deciding to play a course/in a tournament explain the guiding factors of how you make your decision? A) My factors have changed over the years. At first it was all about where I could make money play professionally. Now that I am older and have a wife and kid with another on the way it depends completely on location. I do not want to be to far away from my family so if it is not close I wont be playing. 3. What is our overall goal of playing disc golf? Why? (Meaning are you out here just blowing of steam or just messing around or do you have a goal to start playing in tournament or move up your player rating etc) A) I just want to get better. I am very completive and want to be the best at everything I do. With disc golf I have never really felt I have reached my full potential so I constantly play to get better so I am the best. 4. How did your perception of disc golf change once you started with this sport? What was your perception before you started playing? A) When I was younger I thought it was not a very elite sport. People were inventing new disc to make them go further and do so many different things. Now that sport as evolved so much that it is elite now. It grows so fast that what was elite in this sport 5 years ago is the normal now. 5. Tell me about your first tournament that you played in? A) The first one I played in was in 2004 and it was the North Carolina state flying disc champion. I was so nervous to be playing I didnt not even have a disc marker for my shots I had to borrow one. I did not know the all the rules yet and was nervous I would do something wrong. The course had water and I had never played around water either. I ended up tying for 3rd place and had to play a sudden death round, I was even more nervous about that but I ended up winning so it worked out.
