The St. Clair Shores
Police Department is
looking for information
regarding the attempted
armed robbery of the
Salvation Army Store
and Donation Center at
Harper and 13 Mile Road
last Sunday morning.
Two suspects, de-
scribed as black males
in their middle 30s, be-
tween 5-foot 10 and
6-foot tall both wearing
ski masks and toting
handguns, approached
two store employees at
about 11 a.m. Sunday,
April 6, in the back of
the Salvation Army
Store and Donation
Center.
One suspect detained
the employes while the
second male entered the
rear of the facility in the
loading dock area and
moved toward the office
area, according to a
statement released by
the St Clair Shores
Police Department.
Inside the building,
two females employees
came in contact with the
second suspect and one
of these two employees
was struck in the head
and knocked to the
ground.

City Council unani-
mously approved the re-
mounting of one of the
citys four ambulances at
its meeting Monday
night, clearing the way
for the fire department to
add what is essentially a
new ambulance to the
fleet.
The ambulance com-
partment, the box, is
mounted to a new chas-
sis, St. Clair Shores Fire
Department Chi ef
George Morehouse said.
Its all gone through, the
wiring, the welds, every-
thing is gone through.
Itll basically be a new
ambulance to our city.
The vehicle in question
is seven years old,
Morehouse said, with
more than 150,000 miles
on it. The expected lifes-
pan of an ambulance is
6-7 years, Morehouse
told councilmembers.
Age and usage isnt the
only issues plaguing the
vehicle, a vehicle that has
already had $25,000 in
repairs over the years,
Morehouse told the coun-
cil.
The city mechanic has
told us that this ambu-
lance has a severe oil
leak, Morehouse told
the council. And, in his
opinion, is cost prohibi-
tive to repair given the
age and milage of the ve-
hicle.
The total cost of the re-
mount is $165,666, just
over $10,000 more than
budgeted, prompting
Morehouse to ask the
council for a budget
amendment for the addi-
tional amount.
The additional money
is slated to come from the
motor pool fund.
The fire department
every years pays a cer-
tain amount into this mo-
tor pool in order to cover
t hese expenses,
Councilman John Caron
said. Thats how all
these types of purchases
have been budgeted. Its
natural that, since it
came in a little higher,
that money would be
coming out of this ac-
count to cover this short-
fall.
The remount was the
best option, Morehouse
said, after the city sent
out three different RFPs
back in late January.
I think we did good
due di l i ge nc e ,
Morehouse said. And
were saving the city a

money by doing it

ATTORNEYS AND COUNSELORS
Most public elementary,
middle and high school
students are exposed to
some kind of commercial
marketing efforts at their
schools designed to in-
crease sales of food and
beverages or develop
brand recognition and loy-
alty to increase future
sales.
That is the key finding of
a new study conducted by
researchers at the
University of Michigan
Institute for Social
Research and the
University of Illinois-
Chicagos Institute for
Health Research and
Policy.
The study, published on-
line by JAMA Pediatrics,
examines national trends
in student in-school expo-
sure to commercially mar-
keted food and beverages,
many of which are nutri-
tionally poor.
U-M researcher Yvonne
Terry-McElrath and her
colleagues analyzed data
from 2,445 elementary
schools, 816 middle
schools and 802 high
schools around the coun-
try. School administrators
answered a series of ques-
tions designed to measure
commercial activity relat-
ed to food and beverages
in the schools. Among the
measures:
Whether schools or
school districts receive in-
centives, such as cash
awards or donations of
equipment, supplies or
other donations, once total
beverage or food sales
from an exclusive vendor
exceed a specified amount.
Whether any compa-
ny sells food or beverages
in vending machines at
school.
How much a school or
school district profits from
sales of food or beverages.
The researchers found
only about 3 percent of ele-
mentary school students
attended schools with ex-
clusive beverage contracts
with a specific vendor in
2012. But nearly 50 per-
cent of middle school stu-
dents and nearly 70 per-
cent of high school stu-
dents attended schools
with these exclusive con-
tracts.
Nearly a quarter of mid-
dle school students and
slightly more than half of
high school students at-
tended schools with food
vending machines, the
study found. And about 10
percent of elementary stu-
dents, 18 percent of middle
school students and 30
percent of high school stu-
dents attended schools
where fast food was avail-
able at least once a week.
Although there were
significant decreases over
time in many of the mea-
sures we examined, the
continuing high preva-
lence of school-based
commercialism supports
calls for, at minimum, clear
and enforceable stan-
dards, McElrath said.
The study was based on
data from the Food and
Fitness Study conducted
at the University of Illinois-
Chicago and the Youth,
Education and Society
Study, conducted at U-Ms
Institute for Social
Research. Both studies are
part of an initiative funded
by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation.
this way.
The savings is about
$30,000, Councilman
Pete Rubino said.
I think this is a great
idea, Rubino said.
Good job.
The remounting pro-
cess takes 280 days,
Morehouse said.

Decorations
stolen
A resident in the
21000 bl ock of
Beaconsfield reported
to police that her Easter
decorations had been
stolen from her deck.
The resident stated that
she placed the decora-
tions outside her sec-
ond-floor apartment
about 12 p.m., and when
she returned home
about 5:15 p.m. that
same day, the decora-
tions were gone. Police
are still investigating.
Egg-ing on Detour
A house in the 23000
block of Detour was van-
delazied with eggs accord-
ing to the homeowner.
The resident claims he
went to sleep and woke to
eggs splattered over the
front of his house. When
police arrived they ob-
served yellowing marks
on the front window and
screen of the house, and
egg shells on the property.
The resident had no idea
who could be responsible
for the egging. The police
reported
no damage to the
property but suggested
the paint might be dam-
aged.

Its a prominent but-
ton on the citys re-

Located on the right
side of the page, posi-

Media Center tab is a
service that city officials
believe can greatly ben-
efit residents.
The Notify Me button
is a customizable service
residents can utilize in a
variety of ways, ranging
from alerts within the
city, such as declaration
of a snow emergency to
agendas from various
city commissions, com-
mittees and the city
council, and just about
everything in between
thats city-related.
You can sign up for
what you want to re-

Councilwoman Candice
Rusie. This feature was
something we had been
looking for to make our
website more useful to
users, and to continue
opening lines of commu-
nications between citi-
zens and the city."
Such a service was a
high priority for the
committee responsible
for the redesign of the
citys website, Rusie
said.
It was one of the top
five things we wanted,
she said. We wanted
residents to be able to
report and track the sta-
tus of their concerns and
complaints they may
have. We wanted to do a
more Q-and-A type for-
mat. We wanted the
website to be searchable
and we wanted Notify
Me.
Features such as
Notify Me are a valuable
tool for residents, and
the process of signing
up involves clicking on
the Notify Me tab on the
citys homepage, filling
out a basic form asking
for a valid email ad-
dress, and then choos-
ing which type of notifi-
cations. Its as easy as
1-2-3, a city promotional
video stated.
You also have the op-
tion of getting the notifi-
cations via text message
too, Rusie said.
Despite the advantag-
es the feature offers citi-
zens, Rusie said the pro-
gram hasnt really been
a popular one on the
website.
The number of regis-
tered Notify Me resi-
dents currently sits at
about 600.
Its not as many as we
have hoped for, Rusie
said. Its free of charge.
Its accessible. You can
pick-and-choose what
youre interested in, and
if you dont want to use
it anymore its easy to
cancel it. I really think
its a case of people not
knowing about it, and
what its about. I think
once they do, theyll re-
alize how great a tool
and a feature it is.

Volunteers are vital to the success of the parade, and this year the parade committee is in need of more people to
lend a hand. These volunteers help to assure children such Jaden Ung, pictured, enjoy the event.
The St. Clair Shores
Memorial Day Parade
Committee is looking for
a few good men and
women to help out with
this years event.
We are looking for
volunteers, said com-
mittee chairwoman
Cheryl Furdos. What
were really looking for
are people who would
like to help with the
cleanup, but even if they
cant do that, the more
volunteers the better.
About a dozen or so are
needed for the cleanup,
which consists mainly of
walking the parade route
after the crowds have left
and picking up the debris
along Harper Avenue.
Were not doing the
cleanup of the street,
Furdos said. Just the
sidewalks. We dont want
anyone going in the
street and picking things
up.
Furdos said that the
success of the parade de-
pends a lot on the volun-
teers.
We have about 50 vol-
unteers, aside from the
members of the commit-
tee, that help out, she
said. And they do a vari-
ety of things for the pa-
rade. We really wouldnt
be able to do it without
their help.
Volunteers arrive as
early as 9:30 a.m. the day
of the parade, depending
on the duty they are
charged with, but few are
at the event the entire
event.
Some people are there
earlier to help everything
in the staging area, she
said. But a lot of the vol-
unteers arrive about 11
a.m., with the cleanup
crew planning to be there
from about 2:30 to 4 p.m.
But, if people can only do
a couple of hours then
have to leave, thats fine
too. We appreciate all the
help we can get.
For more information
about volunteering for
the parade, Sunday, May
25, contact Dennis
Krasnicki at dkras-

A stolen vehicle surveillance operation last Friday,
March 29, took a dramatic turn at about 1:30 p.m.
when officers from Grosse Pointe Park Department of
Public Safety fired multiple shots at the fleeing vehi-
cle on Rosedale near Harper Avenue.
The operation, which included officers from multi-
ple departments, led to St. Clair Shores where police
vehicles attempted to block in the stolen vehicle.
The vehicle managed to escape, St. Clair Shores
Police Department officials said, and sped toward
Harper Avenue. Shots were fired as the vehicle at-
tempted to flee.
The pursuit led into Detroit, where the the driver
and two occupants exited the vehicle and ran into an
abandoned house. The three suspects were taken into
custody and held at the Macomb County Jail.
The incident is still under investigation.
No St. Clair Shores Police officers were involved in
the incident or the surveillance operations, St. Clair
Shores Police Department officials said.

City Council recognized the long-standing dedica-
tion of resident John Cory at its April 7 meeting,
prompting a standing ovation from the crowd that
gathered at City Hall.
Standing between Mayor Kip Walby and
Councilman Tony Tiseo, Cory listened as the Mayor
read a proclamation highlighting more than four de-
cades worth of service to the city, namely as a part of
the Parks and Recreation Commission.
Thank you on behalf of Parks and Rec., Tiseo, who
is the Parks and Recreation Commission liaison, said.
Having someone like John seated at the table when
you walk in at night, hes always smiling. Youre an
idol of mine.
Cory addressed the audience, looking back on his 45
years of service, and chose a pair of parks and recre-
ation programs to mention in particular.
Cory went on to highlight the disc golf course at
Brys Park, the St. Clair Shores Golf Club, and the ef-
forts of Parks and Recreation Director Greg Esler.
The golf course has been improved over the many
years, he said. Its a facility that is second to none in
Macomb County, and Greg Esler and his staff have do-
ne a tremendous job too. Id just like to say that it has
been a big privilege to be part of the parks and recre-
ation department all of these years. Weve had some
great programs and facilities built over these years.
Walby also sung the praises of Corys dedication to
the city.
We as elected officials, many times we get up here
and say all the great facilities we have and the parks,
Walby said. But the reason we say that is because of
people like John. People like John who had the fore-
sight to go out and develop these parks that we now
use. Truthfully we thank you for what youve done for
the community.

4A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014
The Salvation Army
works in many ways in
Southeast Michigan.
More than 80 years ago,
the Adult Rehabilitation
Center was established in
Detroit, offering rehabili-
tation services and train-
ing to help hundreds of
men and women who
come through their pro-
gram.
Separate from the bell
ringing campaign that
supports other great
Salvation Army work, the
ARC is completed self-
funded through 34 thrift
stores in Wayne, Oakland,
Macomb, Monroe,
Li vi ngs t on and
Washtenaw counties.
Feeding those 34 stores
are eight warehouses.
All of the facilities are
under the watchful eye of
Jacqulynn Idzior, director
of operations for The
Salvation Army Southeast
Mi chi gan Adul t
Rehabilitation Center.
She also oversees opera-
tion of the two ARC facili-
ties, the mens building
with 300 beds in down-
town Detroit and the wo-
mens facility with 80 beds
in Romulus.
Donation-wise, this is a
tough time of year and this
winter weather hasnt
helped, said Idzior.
When the economy got
bad, we felt that.
Donations went down and
have stayed down, so
were looking forward to
spring.
The thrift stores offer a
variety of clothing and
household items, includ-
ing gently used clothing
for men, women and chil-
dren of all ages and sizes.
They also offer house-
wares from skillets to
candle holders, seasonal
products, small applianc-
es, sports equipment, fur-
niture, shoes and accesso-
ries and some jewelry and
collectibles, Idzior said.
We try to test every-
thing and make sure it
works. We dont sell items
that are broken, ripped or
stained.
Area residents are invit-
ed to donate lightly used
clothing and housewares
to the store at 31015
Harper, near 13 Mile Road,
St. Clair Shores.
Its a really good store
and people give us some
wonderful items, Idzior
said. The store is 30,000
square feet. We moved to a
larger store and we want
to make sure everybody
knows were there.
The St. Clair Shores
store, along with the oth-
ers in the metro area, has a
drop-off spot marked at
each building. An employ-
ee will help unload the
items and a receipt will be
given for tax purposes.
Donations are taken 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday
through Saturday and 11
a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
If a donor has a lot of
items, Idzior said they may
call The Salvation Army
ARC facility at (313) 965-
7760 to arrange for a pick-
up of items. Donors may
also visit satruck.org to
schedule a pick-up online.
Well be happy to come
get it, she said. We ap-
preciate all donations.
Idzior said appliance do-
nations are common when
someone remodels their
kitchen. Businesses are al-
so welcome to make dona-
tions, which are arranged
by calling Bob Idzior at
(313) 220-0436.
Idzior said the stores
fund more than 80 percent
of the Christian-based
ARC program, which al-
lows men and women to
be part of a self-help pro-
gram that renews the
body, regenerates the spir-
it and rehabilitates the
mind.
Its a 6-month volunteer
program where attendees
obtain counseling, includ-
ing substance abuse, at-
tend classes and work in
one of the stores, ware-
houses or other facilities.
It helps give them skills
and confidence to head
out and succeed, Idzior
said. Its completely free
for them and we receive
no government money. We
rely on donations and
what we make with our
stores.
Idzior, who has been
with The Salvation Army
for 11 years, 4 1/2 as direc-
tor of operations, said her
job is rewarding.
I get out to the stores
and visit with the manag-
ers and employees, she
said. Theres a lot of posi-
tive. I love to see the spark
in people. People that
come through this pro-
gram are struggling. Ive
watched people grow and
blossom and see the
spark. Its the absolute
most rewarding part of my
job.
Along with store dona-
tions, monetary donations
are welcome, designated
to The Salvation Army
ARC. Checks may be sent
to Southeast Michigan
ARC, 1627 W. Fort St.,
Detroit, MI 48216.
Idzior said the organiza-
tion is always looking for
good people, including
truck drivers, diesel, auto
mechanics and other em-
ployees.
Volunteers are welcome
in the stores. An applica-
tion process starts by call-
ing (313) 965-7760.

SPORTS
6A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014
After a slow start to the
season, Lakeviews girls
soccer team put two big
wins on the board last
week.
The Huskies beat
Grosse Pointe North 3-1 in
a non-league game. The
host Huskies fell behind
1-0 when Justine Lynn
scored only 15 seconds in-
to the opening half.
A defensive breakdown
allowed Lynn to go in
alone and score.
However, head coach
Brooke Sweeney-Pouliot
stayed positive and her
Huskies dominated the
Macomb Area Conference
Red Division foe for the fi-
nal 60 minutes and won
3-1.
This is a nice win
against a good team and
the girls used team work
to do it, Sweeney-Pouliot
said. Everyone chipped in
and everyone was fo-
cused. It has been like that,
even after getting off to a
rough start.
Seni or Jenni e
Feldpausch tied the game
with a goal at the 16:32
mark of the first half and
senior Jessica Witt put the
Huskies in front for good
with a goal only 1:27 into
the second half.
Witts perfectly placed
shot was aimed at the far
upper right corner of the
net.
Jessica is one of our se-
nior leaders and she plays
hard on every play,
Sweeney-Pouliot said.
She is like the rest of our
team. The girls give it their
all and it is starting to pay
off with some nice wins.
Witt put the finishing
touches on the victory,
scoring on a header off a
pass from sophomore Alix
Trombley at the 22:11
mark.
The Huskies had other
chances to score in the fi-
nal 20 minutes, but
couldnt find the back of
the net.
Freshman JoJo Biblekaj
also had an assist.
Earlier in the week,
Lakeview won its first
game in the MAC Blue
Division, blanking Port
Huron 8-0 behind the of-
fensive fireworks of Witt
and junior Liz Lach.
Witt had the hat trick
and one assist, while Lach
tallied two goals and one
assist.
Later last week,
Lakeview lost 4-0 to host
Royal Oak. The Huskies
trailed 4-0 at the half and
couldnt get the engine
running in the second half.
Lakeview improved to
1-2 in the MAC Blue
Division and is 2-4 overall.

Lakeview's 3-1 victory over favored Grosse Pointe North pushed the squad's record to
2-4 overall. Lakeview fell behind early, 1-0, but battled back to earn the victory.
The St. Clair Shores
Connection is a communi-
ty newspaper.
Great pride is taken by
myself, and everyone at
the Connection, in this
fact, and we work very
hard to make sure we hold
true to what is at the core
of this publication com-
munity.
Its why you see me,
usually with my camera
draped over my shoulder,
at art fairs, festivals and
parades.
Its why youll find me at
the library and City Hall
and in schools throughout
the city.
Its why our pages our
filled with more than just
news its stories and
photos about what makes
St. Clair Shores a unique
and vibrant city.
Its about all the people,
the events, the moments,
that are woven together to
create the fabric of this
community.
And beginning this
week, were adding an-
other piece to this com-
munity quilt.
Were weaving in the
threads of what is passion
for many, and a common
bond for most.
Beginning this week, lo-
cal sports will be a part of
the St. Clair Shores
Connection.
Sports Connects
Local sports is a connec-
tion between us all.
Many of us are alum
from one of the three high
schools, and perhaps even
donned a uniform or two
during our high schools
days.
Many of us have chil-
dren or grandchildren
who play, nieces or neph-
ews, or perhaps we even
know the neighbors
down the street have chil-
dren who play one sport
or another at South Lake,
Lake Shore or Lakeview.

In some way, sports con-
nects us all.
More than the obvious.
With the help of my col-
league, Bob St. John, we
will be at many varsity
sports games throughout
the spring and beyond.
However, this page, this
newspaper, is about com-
munity, remember.
So its important that
schools, coaches and
fans contribute.
Dont be shy about send-
ing in a snapshot of the
Little League baseball
team that won the tourna-
ment. Dont hesitate to call
in a score or email a result
or pitch a story idea.
Let me know about mid-
dle school teams and
swimming club meets.
A huge portion of this
sports page depends on
these very things it de-
pends on the help and co-
operation of the entire
community.
Moving forward
The addition is a a big
step forward to the
Connection, and one that
I am very proud to be
taking.
I look forward to telling
the stories and sharing the
images of sports teams
and individuals that are
found all over the city.
Im looking forward to
meeting new people, and
creating new friendships
as a result of this page, and
most importantly, Im
looking forward to sharing
all of this with you.
It has been by far, in the
past two years, the most
requested addition to the
Connection newspaper.
When are you going to
have sports in the paper?
The answer is now.
So, without further de-
lay, I welcome all of you to
the Connection sports.

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014
The legendary Camaro Z/28 is back for the 2014
model year.
The 2014 Camaro Z/28 is the most track-capable
model in its history, building on the legacy of the origi-
nal SCCA Trans Am-series contender introduced in
1967. Its unique exterior is designed like a race car to
produce downforce that presses the tires against the
track for greater grip and faster lap times.
The Camaro Z/28 is an uncompromising performer
thats bred for the track and every one of its unique
components supports the goal of faster lap times, said
Mark Reuss, executive vice president of General
Motors Global Product Development. It takes the Z/28
back to its racing roots and adds to the strong lineup of
Chevrolet performance cars.
The Z/28 features 19-inch forged aluminum wheels,
Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires and Brembo carbon ceram-
ic brakes capable of 1.5 g in deceleration. Its power
comes from the 7.0L LS7 engine, with dry-sump oiling,
rated at an SAE-certified 505 horsepower and 481
pound-feet of torque.
Its close-ratio six-speed manual transmission distrib-
utes power to the rear wheels via a Torsen limited-slip
differential. The differential works in unison with Chevrolets proprietary
Performance Traction Management system, allowing drivers to adjust the level of
throttle and braking intervention.
Camaro Z/28 is one of the first production cars to feature race-proven spool-valve
dampers. The damper allows 4-way adjustment to precisely tune bump and rebound
settings for high-speed and low-speed wheel motions. The wider tuning range dra-
matically increases the damper stiffness on Camaro Z/28 without significantly im-
pacting ride quality.
Interior details
Inside, the Camaro Z/28 features trim in a distinctive, matte-metallic finish; a flat-
bottom steering wheel and Recaro seats with microfiber inserts. The seats feature
aggressive bolsters for high-performance driving, as well as seat cutouts inspired by
the five-point harnesses found on racing seats.
To save weight, both front seats incorporate manual adjustment. The rear seats
have also been modified for weight reduction by eliminating the seat-back pass-
through and using high-density foam in the seat back and bottom.
Additional examples of weight savings include the elimination of the tire-inflator
kit, high-intensity discharge headlamps and fog lights; removal of some interior
sound deadeners, and trunk carpet; use of a smaller, lighter battery; thinner rear-
window glass; and no air conditioning except as part of the single option package.
The aforementioned option package includes air conditioning and six audio
speakers for $1,150.
This ground-shaking vision of American performance is available this spring with
a manufacturers suggested retail price starting at $75,000, plus destination.

Camaro Z/28 has aerodynamic treatments designed to produce
downforce at track speeds. A large splitter connects to an un-
derbody panel to further reduce lift. Fender flares over the front
and rear wheels and extended rocker panels contribute to aero-
dynamic stability. Z/28 features an aggressive rear spoiler and
functional diffuser to complete the fully integrated aerodynam-
ic package. Below: A flat-bottom steering wheel opens leg room
for entry and exit and quicker heel/toe shifting. A short-throw
shifter allow for rapid, confident shifting.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest
dream car to bump-up the Mercedes-AMG model range. The
S63 AMG Coupe recently made its debut at the 2014 Geneva
Motor Show and becomes available at area showrooms this
fall. Power and design combine to give the two-door vehicle
presence and great performance. The S63 AMG Coupe acceler-
ates from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.9 seconds and reaches a top
speed of 186 mph. A combination of outstanding driving dy-
namics, advanced lightweight construction and groundbreak-
ing efficiency add to its low fuel consumption. The AMG 5.5-li-
ter V8 biturbo engine has an output of 577 horsepower and 664
pound-feet of torque. Pricing will be announced closer to the
on-sale date.
