INTRODUCCIN
it urges to substitute indirect and unfertile knowledge, to practical and productive knowledge. Jose Marti
When we read different authors theories or essays about how to understand, read or analyze architecture or studies done by universities in different parts of the world we notice that there is not much coincidence between them, it seems like what had been said by one it is not related with what other had said, is like they were talking about a different subject.
An author can emphasize an architecture aspect, for example its relationship with the context, others can emphasize social-economic conditions to determine urban and architectonic production, and another ones can refer to the significance of signs in architecture, etc, etc.
Architecture is related with artistic, technical, humanistic, social, ecologist, supporting fields, etc., and most of what has been written about architecture only focuses in part of them.
Moreover this, authors use different categories and theories with no relation among them. In many cases are very interesting intellectual exercises, but they do not help to understand in a complete way an architectonic work.
This apparent confusion creates a real confusion.
What we really need is an Architectonic Theory Structure simple and clear, that may allow comprehension about many aspects of architecture.
This effort intends to establish the different architecture components, in the most clear and simple way, but also in a complete and wide way, including internal and external architectonic work aspects, in an orderly way.
It is a introductory basic document, dedicated to students, architects and to all who need or wish to understand, study, analyze, read or design architecture.
We pretend a clear, simple, orderly, and complete scheme, that will help to understand and analyze the design and architectonic work , a theory structure, an architecture of architecture.
Using a tool like this, later will be easier to understand other theories, and to get near to the authors of Architecture, so we will be able to know if they are speaking about one or many internal components, consequences of Architecture we will understand the terms or categories that are been used, are based on known terms. In practice every thing we read or hear about architecture, will be placed in this structure or model. The different approaches, tendencies, characteristics, works merits, theories, are related between the parts of this structure, but with emphasis between the parts; for example, between the shapes or expression and
It is obvious that even if this structure is complete, always will be open to be enriched, with new concepts that can give important and tenuous relations between the different aspects. Also, based on this scheme it will be possible that can build new theorys approaches. In architecture nothing is complete; every thing is and always will be perfectible.
In fact, in all these, theories and assays, apparently disconnected, there are some common elements, sometimes named with different words we can say that in different theories exists explicit and implicit elements and concepts, a kind of a common denominator.
This work tries to explain, in the most explicit way those basic common concepts, that have some kind of universal if and it includes in its structure contributions from others, which for us, are complementary, such as:
*Comprehension of Architecture as a System. A system made up of interrelated subsystems, but they can decompose to be analyzed and later recomposed with all relations and interdependence with the parts. This is the most accepted scheme. *Cuban Architects: Segre and Crdenas in Architectonic Critic hold Architecture as a system; and they add some interesting elements like repertory, understood as a group of the designers experiences these elements that determine, the possibilities of his design and work.
*The simultaneous theory, which does not contradict what was mentioned before, insists as fundamental in architecture as body, and in the necessity to focus as: simultaneous in all its aspects, especially during the formation process and design.
*Another approach establish that architecture and architectonic design, like other human knowledge, follow the same mental process, that are not always in a straight line, and admit jumps and regressions, these was by presented the Argentinean professor Togneri and by the Ecuadorian architect C. Jaramillo, enriched by the use of concepts.
*The different semiotics approaches, concentrated in the communicational aspect establish a language in architecture; particularly Models build on these concepts by the Argentinean architect D. Giordano y D. Jaramillo.
*The integral approach, considers architecture as a fact of living that integrates and stands out the presence of man as the center and the reason of architecture.
All these approaches about analyses and/or architectonic design, even in different points of view, coincide in many fundamental aspects and our approach gets richer with each of them. Architecture it self is a complex fact and it useless to is complicate it, but put it into order.
The architect and the student, require a clear comprehension of an architectonic work. Also it is necessary and useful to explain and support their own work, including every aspect or the ones that are considered important; but with knowledge of all of them, in few words, they will be able to explain in a clear and complete way their designs.
They, this structure and model, in fact is only an instrument, and a tool, indispensable to get closer to the complex world of architecture without getting lost. It is an instrument to read spaces and buildings, and only after, the usage of this resource, we can in an easy and clear way get into architecture debates, and build our own ideology, we will be able to give opinions, about our heritage, our roots, about our way today, about international influences, about the value of our architecture and our cities, about esthetic: ours or from others, about how to keep our architecture, about what we should learn from other influences, about an architecture with identity, about what we should research, about what we should study, etc, about so many architectural problems today.
But to get into these subjects and others, to understand in a orderly way an architectonic work, will be easier if we have a useful and clear tool to deal with architecture, when we give an order to the elements that compose it, when we get a structure for theory, an architecture for an architecture.
**** IN THE OTHER HAND A COLLECTION OF SAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE Although words help, architecture explains it self with graphics, pictures, that is why this document pretends to be the mostly graphical as possible, and those that we include, pretend to be a complement of the theory, but also to be a collection of samples of architecture from the past and the present.
Most of the works were done by hand, they try to collect besides the traditional examples, our Latin- American architecture.
If you like, you can say this is part of another book, independent, mixed with these pages, a Collection of Samples.
Motivated by the desire of architects and people to see architecture, we have taken these pictures from many sources, some of them we took part and others were taken from beautiful books (see last pages).
These two books complement each other, but each one has it own life.
To finish, as we included pictures, bibliography and quotes, there is also a high percentage of Latin- American authors. Latin-America has many exponents in this areas. We believe that including them makes this document universal like the concepts that the book collects.
RECONOCIMIENTO

The theory of architecture, must decompose itself, define its own structure. The theory of architecture must find the architecture of the theory. M. Arana
Architecture is a fact with many implications and aspects, for example, some times we hear, we read or talk about different aspects of architecture, like:

All these and other topics, are part of the architectonic work, or condition it. But not only these, also we talk about the relations between them, for example:
The relation of a shape with its build context The relation of a shape with its time The relation of a work with the rest of an architects works The relation of the structural concept with a determine function The relation of architecture with the environment
The relation of the users with the space The economic possibilities vs. the aspirations and needs of group of people
Or we can talk about the special characteristics such as: Significance, communication The spirit of space Architecture with identity Etc.
In practice, each element can combine with another or to other at the same time.
That is, architecture as a complex fact, very complex, with many elements and many relations, and dealing with it with no order, will be an error.
A STRUCTURE TO ORDER THE COMPREHENSION OF ARCHITECTURE
If you look at the list shown before, notice that we intentionally organized in two big groups:
INTERNAL ASPECTS OR COMPONENTS OF ARCHITECTURE AND EXTERNAL ASPECTS OR TERMS OF ARCHITECTURE
And inside of these groups, we have separated in subgroups. So is necessary to put them in ORDER THE COMPRERHENSION OF ARCHITECTURE:
A R C H I T E C T U R E
EXTERNAL ASPECTS INTERNAL ASPECTS
MAN SHAPE
NATURAL CONTEXT FUNCTION
BUILD CONTEXT AND TECHNOLOGY CULTURAL CONTEXT
TERMS COMPONENTS
This chart is very useful for analysis, but we should never forget that architecture is a lot more; is the complex relation between these parts. (See interrelation, Qualities, Signs, Major Sensibility)
Subsystems of the System Called Architecture
Architecture is a unit reality, understand it this way, it is based on that all parts are in fact interrelated, are interdependent and each one has an explanation in the other parts, but if we do not understand those parts, this perspective will be incomplete, since architecture is a complex fact, with many parts, terms and connotations.
For this reason, to study, the internal aspects break into the following subsystems:
SHAPE, FUNCTION AND TECHNOLOGY
(Triad since Vitrubio, and even before, but exists in all theories about architecture)
INTERNAL ASPECTS OR COMPONENTS OF ARCHITECTURE
SHAPE OR EXPRESSION
The shape aspect, also is known as an expression or morphological aspect, and refers to the appearance that an architectonic works offers.
The expression has to correspond to functionality and technology in an architectonic work.
Most of theories consider architecture as an art, or at least they consider that it should be beautiful.
Many times people find in their things, a way to express themselves. Architecture is part of those things because it talks about people. The most of the people like to be surrounded of beautiful people; that is why beauty is an emotional need in architecture, as important as other needs.
Also, architecture is not only an art that only enjoys the owner. Probably is an expose art, and it is there to cheer and to influence in our lives.
Architecture, buildings, houses, are the ones that make the image of the streets, because town planning and cities can not be understood without architecture.
To finish, the expression of architecture, is not only about facades, but also it concerns the internal space that comes out from the expression. Many people can say that this is the most important part since we live inside, but in our point of view, we believe that both are important and beauty and both are indispensable for great architecture.
Now then, inside the shape, we will care for the following aspects:
Its geometry Its concretion Its textures Its details Its materials Its syntax Its final touches Its colors Its proportion Its scale Its harmony Its contrasts Its rhythm Its symmetry Its beauty Or mistakes Etc.
FUNCTION The functional aspect of an architectonic work, takes care that all spaces have good conditions of size, shape, orientation, illumination, air conditioning, sound, etc., so this way all the needs can be done moment in the present and for the future.
Also, it has to take care of the relations between spaces and circulations, so the building can work properly, in other words all the activities should be done with comfort and efficiency.
And so, inside this subsystem we will take care of:
Internal spaces Sizes Disposition Circulations Relations between spaces Illumination Air conditioning Acoustic Climate Integration Organizations Horizontal and vertical zones Etc.

TECHNOLOGY
Is the group of minor subsystems, which make architecture possible; expression and function give materiality, consistence that keeps it stable and efficient. Inside the technology we have:
STRUCTURAL CONCEPTION structural type structural criterion consistence CONSTRUCTIVE materiality building materials building techniques INSTALLATIONS its electrical installations drinking water installations its drains Its special installations its air conditioning installations its sound installations its elevator systems solar heating bio-digesters Aeolian systems photo-voltage systems alternative systems

(Grfico).
INTERDEPENDENCE
As we can see, each of these subsystems can break into other minor subsystems. For example, technology can break into the constructive, structural and installations; installations in: electrical, drinking water, drains, etc.
But, at the same time these three groups: shape, function and technology, and their minor groups, have to be coordinated and even if during our study we break them up, we never miss the interdependence that it has with the minor groups or with the entire body.
A shape depends on the function, and the technology makes them come true.
Function will agree with the shape and technology.
And technology will agree with the shape and function.
They are elements in constant dialectic relation.
They are like gears that have to be organized, if one of them moves the others will move too, as if they were a machine, subsystems of a system. (figure)
If in the example we add a projecting room in an inter-media level, the plan will change its shape; maybe it will require stairs. The structure will change and maybe it will be made of reinforced concrete, and the facade will have anew component. (Figure)
The example can be backwards. If we change the shape, the function and technology will have to adapt or if we change the technology, its sure that the shape and function will suffer alterations to adapt for a new structure.
Then, there are works in which technology has an important role, like a building with many floors, and there are also works in which the shape of the building has a major dose of determination, like Sidneys Opera or the Egg shell of Felix Candela so like many works where the functional part has great importance, like a hospital. But every work of good architecture considers the three aspects: the architect will be able to deal simultaneously with the parts of architecture says Arch. Anibal Moreno, Wright said, is not that the shape follows the function, but shape, function and technology are one.
The considered aspects, will be the constituent part of space itself. They will be the internal aspects of architecture, but these will be in dialectic relation and will have to consider the external aspects.
EXTERNAL ASPECTS TERMS OF ARCHITECTURE
Architecture is part of a great triad
MAN, ARCHITECTURE AND CONTEXTS
Space itself, architecture, is conditioned by others aspects: man and contexts.
Context can be divided into: natural context, built context and cultural context.
By other hand, these aspects: human beings, natural and built context and cultural context, are the ones we can find in every human establishment, from a single house to big metropolis, and these will help to understand them.
MAN
I learned something extraordinary: I discovered that behind balconies, modules, zones, beautiful facade, textures of a stone wall, lived a stranger to me: man
Fruto Vivas
Architecture is for people, so to understand it we have placed Man in the middle of all of these. Architecture will have no sense without the human being, who is the essence of it.
Many times, architects leave people as a theme for psychologists, sociologists and other specialists, which is an error that we should never make.
Now then, first we have to understand a man as a being with different aspects: anthropological, physiological, intellectual, emotional and social- economical circumstances.
This last aspect determines the RESOURCES mainly, the economics ones, which are very important to establish some aspects of architecture.
The relation NEEDS POSSIBILITY, conditions architecture. The size and final touches of a work are determined by these resources.
So architecture has to give an integral answer.
Meanwhile, every person belongs to a culture that determines him in a certain way, and obviously it has to relate him by means of the relations with spaces:
a.- When we design a house for an individual or for a family, which is the most common case, it is important to know their particular conditions, family structure, resources, needs, tastes, wishes, etc.
b.- More as a culture, as a group, when we design for a community, such as a school, church, etc.
c.- More as general specie, when we design a football field or an automobile for example.
Architecture most be done for people, and not backwards. It is not an architect function to design a person. Architecture is under peoples orders. So the architect must translate what each person, each group or culture need. It is obvious that the architect must be capable to guide and enrich them.
CONTEXTO
CONTEXT
Architecture is the continent of great part of the human activities, related with a man; but at the same time it holds a context which it influences too.
We can find two kinds of aspects: 1.- Natural context: vegetation, topography, geology, climate, landscape, etc. and 2.- Built and cultural context.
By other hand, the context could be: a. immediate: the elements, constructions that we border, and elements form the block. b. it could be a bigger context as the city itself.
In any case, a building has a context to count with, and both should synchronize, to harmonize or to contrast, but without ignoring the surrounding context.
There are cases in which the context is stronger, like Historical Midtown or a Natural Park, in which by law, the constructions to build have to analyze and respect that existing context, heights, materials, etc., (you can see this book: Design in places with high context of the same author); and also there are cases in which the context is not so imposing, but is there is and always will be, good architecture can not ignore it.
Obviously, harmony or repetition are not the only solution. There could be contrasting solutions such as the Crystal Pyramid in Louvre Paris, a work of Arch. I.M.Pei or the Museum Of Guggenheim in New York.
NATURAL CONTEXT
Inside the natural context, we will take care of:
1.- Landscape: for an architectonic work landscape is very important since it is a kind of two ways road: a. it is important how landscape contributes with architecture and takes advantage from it with sights. This is what is called sights from the place. b. it is also important how architecture is going to influence that landscape. This is called sights on the place; in other words how is going to look our work on the landscape.
And other factors, depending on each case, are part of the context, that in a minor or major scale determine architecture.
The natural context obviously has to do with ecology and support.
BUILT CONTEXT
We will take care the following:
1. The closer existing group of buildings helps the context, which will influence in the decisions we take and in our party design.
Context could be immediate as the buildings near by in the block, or the architecture of the city.
As we mentioned, in some cases, the context is very strong like a Historical Midtown. Good architecture can not ignore it, even if it is going to harmonize or to contrast, but knowing that it is there.
2. Town Planning, as a continent of architecture, that has a dialectic and interdependence relation, is part of a cultural and built context.
3. The legal and municipality terms, are also part of this context.
In this and the following pages we include examples of architecture and built context.
4.- Segre and Cardenas include another context factor called repertory and it refers to a group of images and impressions of architecture that an architect can count with. These definitely influence his work. The bigger this repertory the more possibilities to work, to consider, or to change.
Our imagination has a limit: what we know
Arch. H. Carvallo
This last factor determines that gathering information about formal, functional and techniques will help a design with more possibilities. That is why the enrichment of the repertory is very important during the design process.
In the Architectural History we can notice that many cities and styles were created under conditions and needs of the repertory that the architects had in that time. And so, when they got to know other cultures, they increased their repertory and sometimes changed their style. For example, in the Crusades, the European Middle age met Oriental architecture with its ogival arches. This element was incorporated to the Romanic style, and like this, other elements were incorporated and gave birth to the Gothic.
Today, in a world of communications, our repertory is wider. For this reason, we should be careful and keep our identity and culture, without guide by others places.
Repertory will be formed by different levels of information, sometimes we will be in touch with architectonic works and others we will have only pictures of them. All of these at their level will be our repertory, even though a critical and selective attitude is needed, to choose the best and reject the improper samples. (See chapter: Critical Attitude)
SOCIEDAD y CULTURA
SOCIETY AND CULTURE
By other hand, the scheme we have made, does not forget that architecture is a product of the culture in a society, and that society and culture determine the aspects of architecture.
Society is also a complex fact:
Ideas Politics Art Economics Science Laws Popular Knowledge Social classes Customs Relations Religion Productive areas History Etc.
These are some of the elements that allow to understand a society. Although its study goes beyond our specialty, we can not consider it in a minor scale, without getting lost or getting into other professionals manners, but realizing that society, culture, time and place are terms of architecture.
INTERELATIONS
These three elements: man, building and context, keep among them a dialectic relation, as all aspects that are part of complexity of architecture. Every single one of this elements, conditions and is conditioned by the others.
Three elements that must keep a balance: man and buildings are in an ecological and cultural context. The building is for people and is inside a context. The surroundings and even more the building takes the man as the main character, and reason to be for architecture.
QUALITIES OF ARCHITECTURE
With the scheme that we have, we can watch in a complete and orderly way any work of architecture, and to do so we can notice spaces or buildings with particular conditions, with special qualities, as a result of a proper use of the relations of the different internal and external aspects:
There are, buildings of great BEAUTY, that probably are the result of a good use of the expression related with its time, a good use of proportions in relation with the sights of the place, the result of a good use of the shapes previously accepted, the result of a good use of final touches according to the materials, the result of a good shape related with the function and/or technology, or the smooth relation with the landscape, etc.
There is architecture with CHARACTER, because its shape revels with quality and clearness the function that carries out, because the building is what it seems.
There is architecture with IDENTITY, because its shape, function and technology have a proper relation with the place, with the culture, with society, with history, because it keeps their essence and characteristics even though the foreigner influences.
There is architecture that INTEGRATES to the surroundings, because its details, proportions, materials respect or/and harmonize with the natural and built context.
There are spaces, in which we feel something special, like an underground pub with a unique ambient, a porch with a rural Andean support, a couples space, a temple where we feel little in front of God, etc. Those spaces with special surroundings, with SPIRIT, that are result of smooth combinations of proportions, textures, illuminations, humidity, or the qualities of others spaces, such as music or other arts, but many times, mostly depends on the relations of people, with some emotional and spiritual aspirations and fair moments.
with fantasy and sensibility, I feel very equipped Paul Pennartz
the essence it is seen with the heart Antoine de Sant-Exupery
More than understanding architecture in a rational way, there are qualities as sensibility, senses, poetic, metaphor, figurative (tools accepted by Gaston Bachelard), with qualities and significance, with something to tell, that help to notice the space and to explain it better.
TO FINISH
An analysis like this, that understand all the external and internal aspects of architecture, is a needed base to study, watch, read, criticize architecture, to develop our ideology of architecture, to be capable to measure, to qualify the dose of importance that any architecture has given to all its elements, so this way to understand the qualities of some architectonic works. In other words, to comprehend architecture and to design process, avoiding simple and incomplete approaches.
This approach is a base for design and analysis, in an orderly, systematic and complete way.
This architecture of theory lets us understand other theories that can give importance to any aspect. In the bottom, in an implicit and explicit way, assume the same elements.

Trying not to complicate the Complexity of Architecture, we considered to put it in an annex these points, but in fact, they are the application of this scheme for the comprehension of these examples of themes related to architecture:
There are many actual architectural themes in the debates of architecture, and there is no interest of this book to take part of them. It tries to give useful tools to understand the relation to determine internal and/or external aspects of architecture, if so, every one can give their clear opinion.
As an example we mention a pair of comments about valid themes local and world wide as:
Architecture and Sustainability
and other as housing deficit.
ARQUITECTURA Y SUSTENTABILIDAD
ARCHITECTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY Supporting development is the one that satisfies the basic needs and the aspirations of welfare for todays society it does not jeopardize future generations to fulfill its own needs and aspirations CEPAL/92
Support depends and refers to a good relation between natural context (ecology), economic development (production) and quality of humans lives (this is a common scheme to deal with this subject).
It is interesting how these subjects related to Support, are all external aspects of architecture, and therefore they are problems that architecture can not resolve and affect it. This will be a part of many to be done by the Support. The structure established in this book, had helped to clear up the elements of this theme.
By other hand, this interesting subject, the New Utopia goes through many others polemic deliberations as:
Deficiency of Socialism and Capitalism Consumption, industrializing and ecological disaster Primitives Communities as an example of sustainability Are developed countries the less sustainable? Etc.
Since there was life in Earth, there should go by about 380 million years so a butterfly could learn to fly, other 180 million years to grow a rose with no other need that just been beautiful says Garcia Marquez and after talking about the disaster says here existed life, in it there was suffer and it prevailed injustice, but also met love and we were able to image felicity.
Important and beautiful documents as this can be useful to think about ecology and sustainability. But is not our goal to stop in this theme.
HOUSING DEFICIT
This is an interesting subject for many countries, and to be used in many different contexts, we see it very far from sustainability, but it is included in one of the three aspects that can make a sustainable development, quality of life, social and human aspect.
the human beings that live in absolute margin, to who sustainability will be to count with a roof to cover them
Leopold Cordero
But what we try in this document, is to see how this structure helps us to comprehend this problem. From this point of view notice that Housing Deficit is the inappropriate relation between the economic possibilities (or political intentions) of a society, with the demands of a group (numerous) of human beings, and as we can see, this relation determines aspects of this problem, External Components of architecture.
Internal aspects, shapes, functions, and technologies, can do something very slightly to help with this deficit. The solution is in political aspects of different societies, as work sources, housing benefits, etc.
SOMETHING ABOUT SIGNS AND SIGNFICANCE IN ARCHITECTURE
In the same way as the other qualities mentioned before and the not mentioned yet, this quality, to communicate, is present in different amounts in buildings.
As a well done phrase, transmits a clear and pleasant intention and information from a person, in architecture a well done wok will transmit in a pleasant and more or less clear way the information that carries, meanwhile a bad work will carry a confuse, unpleasant and wrong information, and will be a pour or not even be a testimony of its place and time.
But architecture as many other things transmits information.
In any building there is much more than just a construction Alfonso Reece
Semiology and architecture semiotics, have the merit to let us show these conditions on architectonic works, and some of them particularly, of communicating, transmit different types of information: techniques, emotions, esthetics, cultural, sentimental, functional, significance.
History of architecture is a clear example of it. A work itself gives us something, a great amount of information, its materials, technologies, its condition, proportions, sizes, scale, geometry, textures, harmonies, esthetics of its time, space relations, and information that complements and it is complemented by traditions, which will help to understand it.
...No.
But, can we read in architecture as if we were reading a book, understand a talked phrase, or an arithmetic number? ..Cant we.
The written language, spoken language, numbers, architectonic drawing and others, are languages much more precise, and transmit detailed and intentioned information, are cultural facts, made with the exclusive propose to communicate, but is not the same in architecture.
Languages are groups of signs made in conventions, with clear transference codes. The signs used in these languages, a letter, a sound, a number, are established conventions, and a sign if always instead of something, for example letter A is instead of a particular sound, because a code established so.
In architecture, doors, windows, rooms, spaces, are not instead of something, and so they are not the same kind of signs used in other languages, but the have meaning and information.
In the same way the codes that permit understand architecture is neither universal nor explicit.
In architecture we talk about a LANGUAGE, a READING of architecture, of SIGNS, of SIGNIFICANCE, of CODES, etc., but in a different way from other languages, almost as if they were figurative terms.
Architecture can not be considered syntax, or conventional semantics languages. During many years, studies have tried to find a grammar application on architecture, but these efforts have been in vane and contradictories between them, and had produced disorder that have not contributed to architecture. Of course there are many different and respected opinions about this, but we prefer to take the one used in this subject: Conscious that we make signs and transmits illusions The practicable and pleasant in architecture is that has and can have significance, transmits illusions, emotions, tastes, culture, technologies, and life styles of architects and users, and so we can talk about architectures language knowing the difference, and that it carries significance of all internal and external subsystems, as we have studied.
Communicates about: shape, tastes, expression, function, uses, technologies, human beings that was made for, their social-economic conditions Context Society Culture Time and place In other words, architecture obviously transmits information of itself, of INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ASPECT OF THE COMPLEX SYSTEM CALLED ARCHITECTURE.
Is very enriching and at the same time it must be a stimulus and a goal, to know that more than just satisfied space needs, we are designing and building SIGNS OF OUR TIME.

SOME NOTES ABOUT ANALYSIS OR CRITIC READING OF ARCHITECTURE
each design and building process, is a experience that must feed next similar experiences
a key point of architectonic design is the use of work, experiences, problems and appreciations, and these will give through the analysis judgments to deal with future cases.
So that analysis o critic reading of existing architecture is a fundamental step to do before starting an architectonic design. By other hand, an orderly analysis, will be a necessary tool to approach to Architectonic History and Todays Architecture, other way will be difficult, confusing, and incomplete process. So, a structure, model to analyze, is a fundamental key to get close to Design (enriching it with previous analysis of similar types), to history and actual architecture. Analysis is and should be a key to an architects formation.
HOW TO MAKE AN ANALYSIS?
Using a system point of view, a building can be seen as a composed system, by other systems and subsystems
David Cymet L.
To analyze, information is needed, and as we have seen great part of this information that obviously can be and it should be complemented by other sources, like plans, bibliography, interviews, and supported by graphics, pictures, videos, computers, etc.
By other hand if we understand architecture, as a complex fact, made of shape, function and technology, for and established by people, and that also is established by a natural context, built context, society and culture, we should approach to an architectonic work in these subsystems, which help to do it in a clear, complete, systematic and orderly way.
Now then, to see an architectonic work as a system, helps to systematize information, but obviously this information will require our opinions.
So, to analyze, consider the following points and relations:
EXTERNAL ASPECTS with its parts and INTERNAL ASPECTS with its parts.
ASPECTOS EXTERNOS O CONDICIONANTES:
INTERNAL ASPECTS OR TERMS
Inside external aspects can be considering the following points:
1.- GENERALITIES (can be understood as some call it Theory Border)
Architectonical Typology Concepts General Information First Approach to the Subject History Etc.
La cultura, la poca y lugar, la sociedad:
Las costumbres Las ciencias Las ideas La religin El arte La Esttica Los Saberes populares La poltica La Economa Las Clases sociales etc.
Culture, time and place, society:
Costumes Sciences Ideas Religion Art Esthetics Popular Knowledge Politiques Economics Social groups Etc.
When it has to do with culture and society that we live in, and about our time, many of these and other aspects we have them inside, because we are part of it, that eventually will be necessary to complement these knowledge. But if we have to analyze other culture and/or a different time, will be necessary to count with a view of the cultural surrounding.

2.- HUMAN ELEMENT
It will be important to have information of the people that use a construction.
Also, it will be important to know to what kind of people that building was made for. (In the following page there is a chart used to get information from people as an architectural term)
They are fundamental facts that we can not miss, and that not always are easy to get in a chart, aspirations, emotions, tastes, preferences of those human beings.
Other human beings facts are RESOURCES that they count with. Social-economical conditions.
The relation NEEDS VS. POSSIBLITY. Generally this fact is the one that determines the size and final touches of a construction.
The cost of a square meter of construction, confronted to the resources for a construction of the owner, many times is the fact that determines the area and the final touches of a construction.
Of course there exists and had existed works in which the resources used were small, and even though have not restricted the work. In each case of our analysis, with the information that we count with we should consider this aspect.
THE ARCHITECT:
Generally an architectonic work is the result of interrelation between the architect and the users. In different cases this balance will decline more to one or other of the human elements interrelating in it; programming and designing the building, but the criteria and experience of the architect will count more, that will show and guide the user. By other hand, generally the user goes to an architect, because coincide with his way of making architecture, and many times searches for his architecture. In an architect (with or without a diploma) always will find the reason to be of an architectonic work.
In this way an architectonic analysis will be incomplete if does not count with the author or creator, the architect of the building.

3.- THE PLACE: Location The Places Size Topography Orientation

In Historic Midtowns for example, it will be important to know to detail the characteristics of the buildings of the immediate section. In this page there is a chart to be used to collect information of the section. Also, it can be useful and sometimes obligatory to make a surveying of the facade of the section.

ASPECTOS INTERNOS O COMPONENTES
INTERNAL ASPECTS OR COMPONENTS
Inside the internal aspects of architecture, we have to consider the function, shape and technology.
1. FUNCTION: To analyze the function consider the following aspects:
Disposition Plans distribution Zones Organized relations Circulations
Spaces: activity, number and type of users, furnishing, size, shape, air conditioning, illumination, etc. Characteristic of Surroundings. (In the next page there is a chart to gather this information)
C. Las tcnicas constructivas.
2. TECHNOLOGY:
We can consider the following subsystems:
A. Structural typology, known as the concepts and elements that keep the building balanced. B. Materiality, materials the works consistence. C. Constructive techniques D. Installations: electrical, drinking water, sanity, specials, acoustics, air conditioning, sound, elevators, escalators, etc.
Investigating and analyzing technology, we have to consider that the architect is interested in it, in the way that influences the shape and the disposition of space only, so it will not be important how a faucet works, what it matters is its dimensions, the space that takes and the ones that should be respected, its convenient location, etc.
3. EXPRESSION:
To analyze this aspect we will consider the following:
The components of the expression are: a. Geometry b. Concretion: Details Textures Colors
And between the CHARACTERISTICS and QUALITIES of the expression we have:
Proportion Scale Harmonies Contrasts or semantic pairs Rhythms Styles Simplicity or complexity Beauty Art Etc.
In the following pages there are examples of some aspects to be considered.
ANALYSIS AS A CONFRONTATION
Architecture with its parts, is in fact an organic whole, with relations of interdependence of its components, and not the addition of its parts, in the same way the architectonic analysis, is not the addition of that information, but a confrontation, that let us have criteria, it makes clear the analyzed, it helps to find errors and good choices that will enrich us the architects. This process of decomposition of the parts of architecture is called Critical Anastilosis.
The matrix theory, is a useful tool to visualize multiples relations of the studied aspects, even though when we gather information, it is almost inevitable to go establishing the most evident comparisons, for example: when we know the number of students in a class, we almost relate this number with the size of the room and we obtain a coefficient that can be confronted with the norms and with the right or wrong function of it. So matrixes of relations help as a complement to systemize this regards, to put them in order and not to forget them involuntarily.
In the next pages we present the probable matrixes of relations between the internal of architecture and between the internal and external aspects.
The created cells, are for reflection and opinion. Matrix will be a tool to see all relations between the aspects that are in a building, but since is a tool, is not a straight jacket, in other words is not going to be necessary to fill up all the cells. According to our interest, is up to our criterion to stop in some cells or give as understood in some cases.
The success or failure, of considering each aspect with its relations with the others, will establish our own criteria, judgments that will have a primary goal, which is going to enrich our points of view the architects, more than destroy or attack others works.
We can not forget that our point of view is only that, a point of view, and that in architecture is almost impossible to find absolute truth, that is why our points of view can find other points o view, which is legible if is honest and complete.
By other hand, confronting some aspects, we can and should find architectonic works with beauty qualities, identity, integration to surrounding, with spirit, with character, with significance, etc. (see chapter: Qualities of Architecture)
CRITICAL ATTITUDE
the best revolution is to revolutionize you
F. Cabral
The honest critic, or at least the one we prefer, will not try to influence in actions and others works, critic must help in our actions and the ones to be done.
Is different to be a CRITIC, to have a critic attitude than just been a faultfinder. The point is not to destroy our colleagues or their works, but to find merits, success, faults, to obtain criteria that will help us and of course when there is something to congratulate, recognize, find worth, maybe is that what we are needing, to know our selves valuable.
A critical attitude must be permanent in an architect and a student of architecture, for example, to seek for repertory by looking over magazines, books and documents of architecture, will give us more possibilities, but also we can mistake all this information, and take wrong decisions. That is way important to have a critical attitude, to distinguish positive and negative things, because not every thing that is published is right or the best; and even more if there is something we will have to think is good for our culture too. Our critical attitude will take the best of those documents, will keep our culture, what we have accomplished with our legacy without replacing it with other, and enrich it with the best and the indispensable from other cultures.
A critical attitude is a filter to enrich our architectonic works. An attitude that helps to build and not to destroy.
A result of a critical attitude will be seen in us and not in others.
Not everything that seems to worth away from a mirror resists when reflects

GENERAL PROCESS OF ARCHITECTONIC DESIGN
In general terms the architectonic design starts form the HUMAN BEING and it finishes with him, going through many levels in a cyclic process.
Individual, family or group with the need of a space or spaces, is the first and the last point of the architectonic design.
Once the need is established and the possibility to satisfy it in terms of architecture comes the investigation process, to know everything as possible, in a systematic way, each of the aspects of the architectonic complexity, that are part of and determines architecture.
This investigation should contemplate gathering information in the different aspects and subsystems.
With this knowledge we will be able to establish an architectonic programming, known as a group of terms that will guide the architectonic design to satisfy the established need. This programming should answer the different aspects that will be part of the new building or architectonic element: shape, function, technology conditioned between them and by a society and context.
It happens that from the beginning, gathering and classifying information, starts an idea that goes forward a constriction of a structure of data and it gathers own or others experiences Togneri (Learning in Architecture)
These stages that we mentioned, are not individual parts, in which one finishes one and the other starts; in fact investigation will keep going on, even in other stages, and workshop can have its significant beginnings, also programming can start during investigation and it does not finish to start workshop, but it can improve it, and in fact all these can continue in construction, and we keep designing.
Each part of this process, investigation, programming, workshop, building, will contemplate each of the subsystems of architecture: shape, function and technology, and inside them context, culture, built landscape, town planning, natural landscape, topography, climate, norms, repertory, society, time, place, etc.
It is also important to understand this structure as a cycling process. It starts with the human being and after an investigation, programming, workshop, building, goes back to the human being to its use, which is a fundamental stage of the process, that allows to evaluate it and to gather experiences for new processes.
A MODEL FOR THE GENERAL PROCESS ACTIVITIES IN ARCHITECTONIC DESIGN
We have tried to leave two things clear:
1. That architecture can be made of internal and external aspects, and at the same time these aspects can be divided into other parts that we have mentioned before (see first chapter), and
2. That the architectonic design starts with human beings and investigates programs, workshops, and building.
If we put these two in matrix, we can have a useful chart to know what to do or what aspects to study in the design process.
In the investigation stage and in similar typologies analysis, the architect must have all the knowledge about the internal and external aspects. In the programming and workshop stages the architect only will design shapes, functions and technologies (components of architecture or internal aspects), of course in relation with the external aspects, design for human beings or natures conditions or culture in each case.
In the following pages we talk about these themes.
DESIGN PROCESS FOR AN EXISTING WORK.
To recycle, restore, etc. existing architectonic works (and urban), the structure varies a little, in the investigating stage and similar typologies analysis, is also very important to make a detailed consideration and a ANALYSIS OF AN EXISTING WORK, THAT WILL GIVE A DIANOSTIC AND PRONOSTIC IN EACH OF ITS ASPECTS.
With this wide investigation, the rest of the stages will be similar in their nature, (including the many different built things).
INVESTOGATION IN ARCHITECTONIC DESIGN
What we should investigate to deal properly a design of an architectonic subject?
For us in this stage, investigation, must includes first: the concept of the type of building to be design, knowledge of the architectonic subject. For example, if the subject is a Radiological Investigation Center, it will be important to have a first approach to the topic.
It is important some history about the place where the building is going to be placed.
Investigar los aspectos externos: seres humanos, contexto natural, contexto construido y cultural;
By other hand, the decomposition of the global idea of architecture in its subsystems and terms, that here we have called it, the complexity of architecture. It gives us the patterns of what we should know and it suggests a structure like this:
Investigate the external aspects: human beings, natural context built and cultural context;
To investigate the internal aspects: shapes, functions and technologies, (on which an architect should have and should obtain the many information and experience as possible)
To end, other important point, that is part of the investigation and that complements and improves the designers knowledge about the subject, is the similar buildings typology analysis.
Now then, to avoid getting lost in a huge amount of unnecessary information as usually occurs, it is necessary to be clear that for architectonic design propose, we should investigate in a architectonic design point of view, so only it will be the aspects that influence the organization, characteristics and/or size of architectonical spaces, for example: an electrical transformer, will not be of our interest to know how it is built internally, but it will matter its size, requirements, location, circulations, dimensions and surroundings conditions; in other words it will matter the things that will influence in the architectonic space.
So, we should gather information about the following points:
A. INVESTIGATION ON THE EXTERNAL ASPECTS OR TERMS OF ARCHITECTURE:
a. CONCEPT History and Generalities about the typology of the building, particularly about the building that we are going to build.
b. CULTURE; As it may occur in an architects career to design for other cultures and places, it will be important to understand and know about the culture and society that we are going to work for.
This is not unusual for Latin-American architects to have opportunities to design for a farmer community, that many countries have. They belong to different culture or cultures, so it will be very important that the architect has to be conscious that in those cultures
c. USUARIOS:
Tipos Cantidad edad sexo caractersticas especiales preferencias opiniones etc.
there is much to learn and respect, maybe even more of what they can teach them. The best thing to do is to respect and understand them.
c. USERS:
Types
Amount
Ages
Sex
Special characteristics
Preferences
Opinions
Etc.
As surge el concepto.
Arq. W. Borroco.
This consciousness can be considered as a first approach, because in the programming stage this interrelation is much more intense.
But from now on, the architect should know that the main point of any architecture, is the human element, reason of architecture.
to talk to the client, to see him, to know him and to make almost a friendship. This way the concept comes out
Arch. W. Borroco
So, with the greatest amount of interviews and relations, the architect must relate himself with the human elements he is going to work for.
In typologies like single housing, the human element should be considered and understood as an individual and family. In other typologies, a concrete person, as in an educational building for example, the human element should be consider as a group, as a culture.
Sitio ubicacin topografa orientacin paisaje Geologa clima etc.
Other important fundamental relation is NECESSITY POSSIBILITY of the group of people, in other words, economical RESOURCES that each case counts with. The architect must show a reference about the actual costs of a certain types of construction, according to the structure, materials, final touches; generally it is handle by COSTS /m! of construction. This factor will allow the owners to have an idea (if they already dont have it) of how many m! they can build and with what kind of final touches.
Sometimes these factors should combine and confront bringing out the opportunity to build in stages or partially.
d. CONTEXT:
In a work to be design, the context, is the place where the building is going to be settled.
place topography orientation landscape geology climate etc.
Built and cultural context (includes the urban) Hierarchy of roads Zone services Urban infrastructure: electrical, telephone, sanity, etc. Municipals or institutional norms Built and cultural surrounding, next to (the closer buildings) and far (the city it self) Sights from and to the building, etc. Culture (sometimes when we design for people of our same culture we do not investigate much and it is given as known)
In some cases, this context will be determinant on the work that we are designing. For example, the Historical Midtowns, where there are norms that tend to integrate new buildings to the image that is been cared. In some cases that determination will be less, but it is always there, and we should always design knowing this context, even if is to respect it or to contrast it.
(ver Repertorio).
B.GATHERING INFORMATION AND REPERTORY OF INTERNAL ASPECTS:
Even if we suppose that an architect and student at this level, should know about functionality, technologies and shapes of building, there are so many typologies, variants, and new possibilities, that it will be important to gather information and repertory for each use. This will help programming and design with many resources and possibilities, (see repertory)
a. Gathering information and repertory about the function: examples of spaces, activities, relations, dimensions, shapes, locations of different surroundings.
In this general point usually we go to bibliography that have a lot of information, about dimensions of some elements, useful information. It should not be left without confronting it to real life, since anthropometrics measures can vary depending on the raze and culture of the users.
b. Gathering information and repertory about technology: typology of possible and appropriated structures, materials, electrical, sanity, special installations, and ecological (if there were the case)
It is pleasant for an architect to feel that the technique is present, that he/she can use it in its fullness Oscar Niemeyer
As we already said, investigation of technologies, especially of installations, it will be important to investigate only the characteristic that influence the architectonic spaces needed: machines rooms, ceilings spaces, etc.
c. (Ver Actitud Crtica).
c. Gathering information and repertory of morphological expression: check over documents, books, magazines, etc. It will be important a critical sense, so this way it is possible to chose the positive and negative things from them, avoiding inappropriate and unthinking imitations. (See Critical Attitude)
C. ANALYSIS OF SIMILAR TYPOLOGY BUILDINGS
In the chapter of Critical Analysis, we explained a model to analyze, that is based on the same model to comprehend architecture, and for this reason has a similar order like investigation, but there are differences between a work still to build and an already built work.
The analysis of buildings with similar typology can refer to works which we can have different contact levels, like buildings magazines or books, or buildings where we can not get in at all, or buildings with easy and complete access of information. In this way there will be different possibilities to analyze but it is important in each case to obtain criteria that will help us to decide aspects that will affect our future work.
In the next page we remind you the aspects to be considered in an architectonic analysis, but it will be necessary to review this chapter in some previous pages.
PROGRAMMING
In function of the knowledge obtained in the investigation, it is necessary to start defining, how we want the building, start programming it. It is fundamental the participation of the people we are working for. In other words, programming is to plan how we want the building to be in its different aspects, and it must be done in a dialectic relation between the users and the architect.
The architect must understand that he is not designing for himself, but for other people with different points of view, for example, how its spaces work, or with ideas about the shape or expression of the building and even more if we work with other cultures, in which case the differences can be stronger. It happens that when we work with farmers, for example, we tend to teach them how to improve their life styles, trying to impose new schemes. It is an error and it ends in failure, or even worst trying to destroy their culture.
In these cases the architect should go with a learning attitude, because there are lots old wisdom in the functional, technological and expression structures that they use.
Architecture is and it should be for people and not backwards. It is not function of the architect to design a person. The architect should be a translator of what each human being, culture or group need and a good architect should enrich the client with his vision.
With all gathered information, and especially with the human element one, we should start to establish the characteristics of our building, form the functional, technological and expressional point of view.
In other words the programming should not be only about the function. It is very important to start with the workshop, or to know what alternatives we have not only in the functional manner. So, programming should be about function, and technology, which are the internal aspects of the architectonic work. The function, technology and shape will reflect the external aspects or terms which are human beings and natural and built context, society and culture, because all of these are architecture.
The functional aspect programming is generally made by charts, lists, writings and graphics, more or less complete, and will have few changes during the design process.
To make areas lists and conditions of each surrounding, the architect (many times with the owner) must take note of:
the meticulous knowledge of human activities in architectonic spaces and its order
Arch. A. Vega
In other words, the dimensional and surrounding analysis of each space.
The technological aspect programming generally is made of lists of graphics and writings more or less complete, but the difference between the functional programming is that it contemplates more than one structural and building possibility, and it has preferences and options for each case (for example: the use of tiles or stone slab for the roof), this is a decision that in workshop will be established.
And the expressive aspect programming is a group of graphical and written preferences, which never covers al the design, is an incomplete or unfinished list that has more than one alternative, since the designer or architect always has more than one alternative in the expressional aspect of his/her project.
Obviously to program the different aspects, it must be considered the context and the users that influenced, in a big or small way, for the morphological, technological and functional aspects definition.
The programming of the three aspects is fundamental to make a design. The three are a group of requirements that must fulfill the work to be done, so the shape if is not considered in a certain way before the design, it could be just a result, and good architecture is not created in that way.
When the architect and the owner make the programming together, they write down technological, structural, materials and installations requirements. And they also exchange ideas about the shape: details, styles, simplicity or complexity, straight or curve, decoration or sobriety, horizontal or vertical, etc. also they include the technological and expressive programming.
So we are clear that in architecture the functional, formal and technological criteria are needed, previous to the design; and those are called: Programming.
Arq. W. Borroco
There are opinions that believe those formal and technological terms are not programming at all as the functional ones, and they are called formal and technological party. But even though their names it is important to know that they exist and they are necessary.
Programming is not an unchangeable straight jacket, but is a group of preferences for the building, that usually improves during the process, in which there should be contact with the client.
A programming made with users, is a base to make come true a good design.
continuing, when the design is shown to the client, almost all time he likes it. If it is not well done it is because you did not pay attention to what the client said you ignored the messages that the client sent when you were talking.

HACIA UNA MAYOR SENSIBILIDAD Y UN PROYECTO ARQUITECTONICO MAS ARTISTICO Y CREATIVO
otro enfoque?
MORE SENSIBILITY AN ARCHITECTONIC PROJECT MORE CREATIVE AND ARTISTIC
Another approach?
Some universities of the world have studied and are studying more freedom designing and/or motivating artistic creativeness in the shape of architecture.
One of these interesting approaches is the one of Carlos Espinoza, that analyzing peoples interior, their rhythms and searching in other arts as music, photography, theater, movies, etc. finds incentive and relation with architecture.
Interesting experiences that allow seeing, how the designers rhythms influence his/her tastes for shapes. Or in other moments, in which a guitarist finds music that seems to say the same thing as an architectonic composition. We feel that architecture develops in space meanwhile music does it in a lapse of time. (lets remember that minds like Albert Einsteins understood time and spaces as two things of the same nature.
All artistic sensibility, very positive for the architects formation, in fact is a design method (or a part of it), that does not contradicts with the structure here established, because it is only emphasis in the shape and its search. But we can not forget about technology, functionality, people, natural, built and cultural contexts; all these aspects that must be known (investigated) and determined (programming).
Even though they were made so not strict, they must de present.
WORKSHOP PROCESS It is an unknown part that goes from the programming to the previous project or to the architectonic party (known as the moment when the design takes final or almost final shape).
Generally this stage is known as the design, but in this document we will call it workshop. We dont think that this is the best name, but with the propose to understand design as a wider process that starts in the investigation and it goes through the construction itself.
In fact, this is a part that even we give it order, analysis or repeat all we have said in this document. Things will be harder to establish. To invent a formula to design good architecture, it will be like to find a method that guarantees good music composition for example.
In that difficult manner, we dont try to establish the only truth, or pretend to say that it is unquestionable. It is based in our experiences as students and architects, but more as teachers of Architectonic Design Professorship.
Like in music and in other creative human areas, it could result, aside of certain knowledge, techniques and skills, some general characteristics that can be called: references and general aspects, to which the process can refer
ALGUNAS RECOMENDACIONES
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
In fact, in architectonic design professorship we have noticed and carried out index cards of ways to design, with students in high levels, that have taken other design levels guided by different professors (knowing many practical and theory tendencies, in other words with students that have designed in different ways.
With this human element, we have registered the graphics type (hand made sketches) the theme (perspectives, plans, etc) and the following processes, writing down this information in formularies, confronting them with the quality of the results and the quality of the student in each case. Obviously that from this information can not come out only one way to design, or an exact list of steps to follow, not even the best works, but we can notice some common characteristics in good results. This observation of the learning process, other experiences and reflections make us to propose the following recommendations that are not a complete structure, (later will be seen in Annex, an aspect much more delicate):
1. The shape in good designs is part of searching from the beginning. The shape or expression is not an ingredient that integrates itself in a second part of designing.
When the shape is left to be done after the first functional steps, the shape ends up to be a poor result of other aspects. In the same way, materials and technologies to be employed must be determined from the first sketches, since some will have certain possibilities and expression from others.
2.The shape, from the beginning should be considered not only as volumes with proportions and scales, but it must have an idea of doors, windows, textures, colors and details. If we dont follow this and we only deal with volumes, and when other components of the shape intervene as: details or windows, the pleasant volume ends up as unpleasant.
3.To begin the design, even from the first stages as zoning, is necessary to know and understand before the details of the surroundings to be designed. Its sizes need, shape, illumination, air conditioning, permanent and movable furniture, entrances, relations between spaces, circulations, etc.
The students with this idea, are capable to establish with facility a good zoning.
In other words this global concept and apparently without details, demands that the designer has to understand all components and details of what he wants to design.
Stages like possible bi-dimensional analysis of the different surroundings are necessary before.
4. After this, the design goes from the generality (zoning and geometry) to the decomposition and after to details.
This is not absolute, and being architectonic design a process, not straight as the human thinking process, but there could be some changes since design (that we are calling it workshop process) goes from generality to decomposition and to detail:
In first place, we have already explained that to establish generality, that is a previous inverse process, to understand the detail and all components of what we are going to design.
By other hand, the workshop process can begin not with the zoning or other generality, but with a detail; for example designing a principal door, but later, this one will join the generalities, in the first sketches of the building, so with the detail we go back to the generality.
We can start the design establishing that an ambient must be next to other and separated by a height difference of 80cm. and a hand rail. But after this step, this first part or our design, also will be included in the first sketches.
In other words, if we start the workshop process with specific aspects and not global ones, we will include them in the global sketches.
But if the process goes from the global, to a decomposition and later to detail, many times in the details and defining levels, we will see that it is necessary to go back and make global adjustments or in the disposition.
Architectonic design goes from generality to particularly, but the method induces but it does not guide.
Arch. Rafael Malo C.
5. One of the few general things that we can notice in the design process is that even if we start with a technical surveying of the place, the first sketches are hand made. And later in the definition process, the technical drawing is used or both.
If we use the rules from the beginning, the drawings take too much time and it is harder to make any change, which usually it is done during the design process.
By other hand, it is noticed and important to note that the drawings that help the design are the ones made by hand, since they represent in a better way the size, shape and location. But other ideal drawings dont consider these facts, like the size of the place, generally wastes effort and the designers time, and even worst, that makes the designer to grapple to an idea that cant be done, and some times they dont fit in the place. This doesnt contradicts the value of sketches, but it ratifies it with knowledge of the terms.
It is pleasant to find something like this, in the lines that we are reproduced for its quality and its level of truth:
Arq. Carlos Jaramillo
It is worth of to pay attention to the architectonic sketches, those scrawl drawings that we throw out like small paper balls, and fill offices and classrooms garbage cans.
Those are childish languages that many times the designer or architect is embarrassed to show them, that most of the time help to accomplish the concrete idea. Soft pencils, pieces of paper, even tissues and cigarettes boxes, are instruments of work that help to build those architectonic words that later will be converted to Texts of Design.
Those drawings have been taken most of the time more or less importance than they should have. Sketches that are kind of artesian work or graphic manifestation of sudden thinking.
Without sketches, those are the furtive dialectic materialization of the relation between the brain and the hand; it would not be possible to exercise in the faculties workshops of architecture. Drawing sketches are like a dream that the design will come true. This is the motor that moves the students and even architects imagination. Arch. Carlos Jaramillo
6. Trying to find beautiful architectonic plans as drawings, like shape of plans, it is an often error that we should avoid, at least if it is not an effort to design functional plans and that brings out a beautiful architecture inside and outside.
The architectonic plan is not a painting, and it shouldnt be done like one; it is an instrument that helps to obtain the qualities that we wish.
The shape of the architectonic plans, few times are going to be seen, for example when the building is going to be seen from above.
The plans are not going to be seen as flat drawings, but like spaces and constructions that they bring with the rest of the design projections.
The architectonic plans should be planned to have en efficient and pleasant disposition, so they may determine pleasant shapes and volumes inside and outside.
The designer should think that the building itself is more important than a plan as a picture. But if the plan has an artistic value, that is good too.
It is necessary to clarify that is a merit of Architectonic planning, to show good graphical expression, good presentation, neatness, which are factors included in all good work and it makes an easier design to build because it gets to the owners eyes.
7. It is very important that the designer notices the relation between the ARCHITECTONIC PLAN PROFILE and the materials of the different levels, with the volumes and characteristics of the expression. The architectonic plan profile is one of the factors that directly influence the volume.
To get a determined volume and set of volumes, it is important to design a plan that fits the volumes we want, otherwise we will get something we dont want.
Is fundamental to know where we want to go, other wise we will get somewhere we dont want to
8. Notice that the shape design is not only about designing exterior frontages, like many cultures, Christians, Greeks, Arabs, etc. the beauty of their houses mostly are interior. Segre said in that Le Corbusier wanted his interior surroundings to improve life, and he got that with diagonals, height differences, textures, colors, lights, shadows, roof gardens, materials, double heights, etc.
In Contemporaneous Mexican Architecture, the roof gardens, set of lights and shadows, bright colors combinations, define interiors, full of life and movement, architecture to make life much more enjoyable. The way of doing it depends of details or preferences of the culture, and concrete moments. But the most important of all is not to forget the interior design.
9. Another aspect we can suggest is the use of models and conical perspectives not technical but closes, as a part of the decision process and not as final touches.
The axonometric perspectives can be useful too, even though it is not really how the human eye is going to see. It keeps the horizontal and vertical dimensions, useful and descriptive fact, with other resources, to study the functional or technological relations, of the different floors or levels of a building.
10. As the user is and should be an active participant in the design process of his/her house. He should be heard with attention, in a permanent interchange of criterions with the designer, in the investigation, programming, in the workshop process (discussing sketches, drafts, etc) and later during the construction, since he is going to live there and he going to pay for the work. Many times it is the most important investment of his/her life; in the same way the student should interchange criterions with the teacher or professor.
Architecture, comparing to other arts, is not always the creation of only one person; most of the cases it will be the result of discussing at least two persons: the owner that knows what he needs and the architect who advises the client, guides him and interprets the owner, them he accepts what the architect otters.
As we said before these are only some recommendations about the Workshop Process of the Architectonic Design that dont pretend to establish a complete scheme, but they can be useful in any case.
We have left for an Annex, a probably model of how to deal with the Workshop.
CONTINUING THE PROCESS After an architect has an architectonic party and he has a draft project, and after an interchange of criterions with the users or owners, and the changes if they exist, the final plans will come. Complete ARCHITECTONIC PLANS, some times with details, final PERPECTIVES, sometimes with models and also with computer animation.
Drawers, with tables or computers, that worked in the process or the architect him/her self, are in charge to make the final presentation.
About the use of the computers in the Architectonic Design, Rogelio Salmona says: nothing can replace the use of pencil and paper. Then, all it is passed to the computer and it helps some vexatious processes. And it only helps to save time and it makes the work cleaner, but it doesnt replace the hand and talent.
Some times, depending of size, height or other descriptions of the project, according the law help from other professionals, like engineers for the STRUCTURAL CALCULE, SANITARIUM CALCULE, STUDIES TO PREVENT FIRES, ELECTRICAL STUDIES, TELEPHONE STUDIES, LUMINOUS CALCULE, ACOUSTICS CALCULE, AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS, etc.
But in fact, many times, the process of design doesnt ends there, it continues in a stage and important part: BUILDING.
BUILDING AS PART OF THE DESIGN
Even though an architect has put all his effort and all his experience in the works plans, there will always be some aspects to be reconsidered.
Building allows that, especially the owner, but also the architect (generally the authors of the work, in different doses depending on the case), may live in a personal way and may improve or change things.
In the design, during the stages like the workshop process, models, or animations in computers, tools are important that allow visualization and help to decide some aspects of the project. But the building is a huge MODEL, the best design model: it allows to locate us precisely, in the place, in the environment conditions, in scale and in real perspectives , and see things that only can be notice in the place.
Building is a fact much more personal, and richer design tool than others.
If it werent like this it would not be necessary an architect to build a work; only it will be needed the plans and a good constructor.
That is why a constructor or director of a construction is fundamental in the design and final result, and a constructor should be a good designer. A good plan built by other criterions, can lose the authors expression. In the same way a bad design, can improve with a constructor that is a good designer. The quality of a building can be determined by the hand of who is directing the construction, because it can keep designing.
Good architecture, the one that has life, the one that transmits, is not only a result of a good design in a paper, but also in the construction made with sensibility, with intention, with criterion of what we want to tell.
Architecture is not what is talked, or written, not even what is drawn. Architecture is what is built.

UN MODELO PARA LOS PROCESOS DE DISEO EN EL TALLER? A MODEL FOR THE DESIGN PROCESS IN WORKSHOP?
A MODEL FOR THE WORKSHOP PROCESS IN THE ARCHITECTONIC DESIGN?
What was mentioned before are few conclusions that we have written in this investigation about the Architectonic Design, and we consider that have some level of truth. Our vision of architectonic design, motivate us to build a model for Workshop Processes that is not strict even though it seems like it is:
We propose a model scheme of the design course, knowing that each design follows its own ideal course, and that each case and each designer will have their own changes. In this way we insist that this chapter can be considered an annex and review not by every body, but by those who wish to investigate in this difficult but enigmatic field of design, especially in the almost unknown part that goes from the programming to the draft project or to the architectonic party, known as the moment in which the design has taken an almost a final form, even if is not finish.
A. de ZONIFICACIN Y FORMA, B. de DISTIRBUCION Y DISPOSICIN C. de DEFINICIN TCNICA, y D. de DETALLES Y CONCRECIN Unlucky one who pretends to impose logic in the magical kingdom T. Aguilar
That is why we pretend to find a minimum of relation and sequence in what we know that in its medullar part it cant be schematized which is aptitude and CREATIVITY. Workshop process goes from the functional, technological and morphological programming.
The architectonic design, in this stage, is made up great part of a constant confrontation or dialectic relation of the shape, function and technology, (that are subsystems of the system called architecture, gears of a machine).
the architect is an organizer of the functionality, beauty, stability
This confrontation of functional, formal and technological possibilities, is done in the different levels of definition that we have called:
A. Of zoning and shape B. Of distribution and disposition C. Of techniques definition and D. Of details and concretion
Even though a person can suggest another thing, in all stages confront and conjugate the shape, function and technology.
a. in the LEVEL A: Zoning and shape: it will be established big zones and big volumes, with some and other technological ideas. This resolution level has size, location and shape ideas of the building, that includes an idea of circulations and idea that in those big zones can fit determined spaces, and that in those big volumes the forms will go those we want to produce. In other words it involves an idea of the levels D and E.
the architectonic design involves a simultaneous thought of all aspects
Arch. Anibal Moreno
Generally, this level is expressed by handmade sketches and it is not definitely many times it proposes some alternatives.
As the other levels it must be done a simultaneous work in the three aspects (shape, function and technology until the get into coordination.)
b. In LEVEL B of DISPOSITION AND DISTRIBUTION: deals with the sub zones of the big zones and approaches to a geometric structure relating with the technology. This level has a close idea of the size, location and shape, generally it is done by hand.
In this level depending of the typology, nets of reference can be use, for example in high buildings in which the structure is an important fact.
c. In LEVEL C of TECHNIQUES DEFINITION: is determining dimensions, materials, shapes, generally made by ruler.
d. In LEVEL D of DETAILS: other elements of the architectonic party are completed, like windows, doors, gardens, closets, bathrooms, etc.
In many cases these levels have a sequence like the explained before, that go from the global, in the first level, to the definition of details in the last one. But this does not occurs all the time. So this scheme cant be taken as a strict course. The architectonic design is an epistemological process, and as other processes of the human thought, especially the creative ones admit jumps and regressions, so the process can begin from any level, or in some cases two levels can be done as one or more. Also, some levels end depending of others and that is why they are not by themselves, but between them exist a dialectic relation.
EJEMPLO
EXAMPLE
Designing a building:
Programming we start drawing an idea of the volume (A) and maybe a detail (E), and simultaneously we start with horizontal and vertical big zones. Also we have an idea of the technology or structural technologies that will make possible the shapes and functions. This zoning and technology will demand changes in the volumes and these will make changes in the shape or disposition of the zones.
(B) We get into the major definition of the geometric structure and textures, relations vanes-fullness, in function of the materials. Eventually can be used a net to help in the structural disposition. We confront these factors of shape and technology with a first alternative of organization of spaces of each zone. This disposition can make changes in the zones and volumes (A that will allow go back to the changed textures and shapes. To this point we only used handmade drawings)
(C) Now we try with technical drawings, the definition of the dimensions of the spaces, which already had close dimensions from the beginning of the workshop process. This will depend on the materials for dimensions of walls, supports, etc. This dimensioning can be different from the shape dimensions, that will make us confront both of them, until both get into concordance making changes in one or both of them. Eventually, it can be made some changes in zones (A) or the disposition or the structure (B) that will make adjustments in all levels (A B and C).
(D) We determine other elements of the architectonic party like doors, windows, gardens, etc. that can implicate changes in the disposition idea of the windows in the shape (B). Obviously, the sizes of the vanes will depend on the technology. To end, if the formal party is not good it can be required to go back to the levels (B and (C) or even to (A) or go back to the beginning levels.
Arq. Ral Cordero
This or other scheme can de strict, and itself does not guarantees a good result, that will never be away from the vocation, creativity and aptitude of their authors.
But, this approach has manifested the most important ingredients that intervene in this passionate puzzle called Architectonic design.
I hope this can help in some way, this was the intention.
