THE PASSION OF CHRIST: HUMAN FAILURE AND DIVINE VICTORY
From all human points of view, the passion and death of Jesus which we commemorate this Holy Week is a grim picture of defeat and failure, shame and darkness. All the forces of evil came together against Jesus on the cross. All the human expectations about the Savior failed. He who was expected to save Gods people from the political tyranny of the Romans and gather the remnants of Israel now hangs on the cross like a wretched criminal. In the eyes of the spectators, he was not the Messiah, and the apparent silence of Gods seemed to prove them right. But the truth is beyond what the human senses can perceive. It is God who has the final word. St. Paul sees clearly the meaning of it all, for he sees the passion of Jesus Christ from Gods own eyes. He wrote to the Corinthians, Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God, for the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength (1 Corinthians 1:22-25). The passion story is not complete in itself, for we know that death is not the end. Everything was bound to happen to reveal the glory of God in the Resurrection of Christ. In His passion, death and resurrection, God made human failure a way to show Gods victory.

Divine Mercy Sunday

The Sunday after Easter is universally observed throughout the Church as Divine Mercy Sunday. John Paul the Great established the Feast of Divine Mercy Sunday during the canonization of St. Faustina in the Jubilee Year 2000. Our Lords great promise: The soul that will go to Confession and then receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise on this Great Feast of Mercy. Fr. Mario invites everyone in the parish to attend the Divine Mercy Sunday Devotion with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on April 27th from 2:30 3:30 p.m. in the Church. A light reception (no potluck) will follow in the Music Room.
