Common Questions for All Engineers Q: Describe yourself Give a short rundown including your educational background, past

job titles and total work experience. Dont put forward your personal profile. Sample answer- I am a hard working and ambitious person and appreciate hardworking and serious people. I had joined by first company as a programmer analyst and presently working as a senior associate. I have a total work experience of 5 years. Q: Tell me about your educational background? Be specific and to the point. You dont have to start with your high school percentages. Instead highlight on the recent past qualification. Dont forget to mention the name of the college/university from where you had attained the degree. Sample answer- I graduated from IIT Kharagpur with a B. Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. I completed my MBA from IIM Calcutta and had been recruited by a corporate giant in my final year. Q: What do you know about the organization? Highlight the positive aspect of the company and make the interviewer feel that you have researched well about the companys profile and history. You need to express your knowledge about the organization in front of the interviewer. Keep your answer short and crisp and yet it should say all that the interviewer wants to hear!

Q: How would you do justice to the job? Talk about your qualities and approach that your prefer implementing so as to do justice to your job. Sample answer- I believe to do justice to any job, what matters is motivation and self discipline and I have these two qualities inbuilt in me. Q: What are your weaknesses? Failure to ask questions to the interviewer is indeed a major flaw. In fact, your success in grabbing a job largely depends on what and how your ask. Do not share information on simple issues that you solved and neither talk about complex issues that you are yet to be solved. Share the problem(s) that had blocked the flow of your project and made you take an alternative approach. Mention the approach you took and the reasons for it. Try not to start with your academic qualification as the interviewer(s) would already know it. Q: What are the differences between vector and array? The interviewer(s) through this question wants to judge your academic knowledge. But at the same time interviewer(s) is also expecting a more professional answer that is different from the one in the text book. Add some example and share situations when you had to work on both the things. Add the thing that is better and when should be used to get optimum result. E.g. - Vector and ArrayList are very similar. Both of them represent a 'growable array', where you access to the elements in it through an index. A tricky question and any answer may be used to judge you. Try to add a note of optimism. Do not be harsh on failure and neither lenient. If you use any quote to define failure, then also be ready with example to show that you have also followed it. Are you arrogant? Remember that whatever you say would be used to evaluate your nature. Make sure you dont lie. Do not say any famous quote but just talk about your own perception. Q: What role are you ready to take in a group? Do not jump into any particular role like team player or leader. The interviewer(s) is trying to measure your comfort level in different level of the organizational hierarchy. Share your experience and knowledge that you have gained in professional sphere in view to the question. Mention your willingness to work under someone and also highlight the potential that you have to lead a project. Make sure your answer is according to the profile of the job and your experience. For a Team leader job, do not say, I am ready to allow any one take the charge. It would send wrong signal about you management skills. Vice versa if the position is for junior level then do not talk about

the higher designation. You may inform that you would be comfortable in taking higher responsibilities in future. Q: Who has been an inspiration for you? Do not take the names of any famous person or someone from your family. Well, it is not bad in having them as your role model but try to separate yourself from the other interviewees. Say about someone who is not so famous but has been motivated you. If you really follow someone from deep within your heart then say things that may be reflected in your work. You may say, I am inspired by Thomas Alva Edison and have tried to experiment and discover a lot in my childhood days. Though I failed most of the time but continued the nonsense of understanding nuances of science. Q: What is more important to you, money or success? Be honest and admit whatever you believe. If you say, you like money then it is fair until and unless you do not take support corrupt practices. If you think success is everything, then be sure not to say things like Money is not important or I can do anything for success In the first case the interviewer(s) may ask, If we pay you less will you work? This question may land you in trouble while negotiating salary. In the other answer it would send a wrong answer that you may engage in corrupt practice that may in future tarnish the reputation of the company. While addressing this question analyze your current position. If you are a fresher then highlight you academic achievements. Also highlight any awards received after participating in any science competition or events of such kind. In case this is your second job then highlight some of the achievements of your professional achievements along with academic achievements. If you have handled any project individually then mention them. For mid-level or senior level professional highlight professional achievements more. The lesser the academic achievement the better it is. Start with the professional one. The interviewer(s) would like to know about your professional achievement in this case. If you share more academic experience then it would send an impression that you havent developed in the professional sphere. Remember to highlight the effect these achievements had on your career. Be short and do not go on mentioning each and every detail. Q: Can you name some engineers that you knew or worked with?

It is better to clear out exactly whom the interviewer(s) is trying to pinpoint. Is it some of the renowned people in the industry or those you have worked with. You may start by saying, I have worked with some of the best engineers who may not be renowned but have played a vital role in the engineering world (mention their names). They have helped me in mention how they have helped you in developing yourself. What they have taught you. Also, if interviewer(s) ask, provide their contact details. Q: Can you describe how engineering generally has changed during your lifetime? Talk about the advancement in the field of engineering and also the benefits one has got from these changes. Try to keep the answer short and talk about the engineering marvel from your domain. If you are into civil engineering then quote examples from it. You may say, I believe that in the recent years the engineering technology has merged with the growing computer technology. It has reduced the time waste and has also increased productivity. Today complex structural design can be prepared using the some of the path-breaking virtual platform. Highlight the company operations that would help you in enhancing your career. If this question is followed by the previous one then mention the business operation of organization. It is ideal if you could study about the organizations profile, and its future expansion plan. Use these data to explain the reason behind your urge to associate with the organization. You may say, The organization has a very promising future plan, from what I have understood after reading the vision statement. I believe the future course of action would help the organization in becoming a market leader. And I also feel that I could use my knowledge and experience is playing a vital role in the growth of this organization If the previous question was not raised then use the above mentioned answer along with the points mentioned in this question. Q: Where do you see yourself five years down the line? Dont exaggerate and say that you would become the CEO. Also do not be modes in your answer. The answer should help you in projecting yourself down line of five years. Say things like, if you are fresher, I see myself as a potential employer and a key contributor in the operations of the organization. I believe I would be able to make valuable contribution in the turnover of the organization and also in the functioning of the overall industry. If you are a senior professional, then say, As I have experience in this line of job, it would help me in optimizing the production level. My strategy would be to engage in sustainable development and create a platform for the company that would help the organization in further expansion. The future expansion would be beyond the five years time frame as we do not do business for 5 or 10 years.

Q: What are your strengths? Be careful in answering this question. Try to mention only those strengths that you could complement with an example. Say something like, My honesty and hard work has being my strength throughout my career. In my last company when there was crunch in Human resource I took up additional responsibility or you may say I am a quick learner. When I started off my career I had to unlearn and learn a lot, even I had to learn customized software used by the company. I did all this in limited time frame. Q: How do you pursue your hobbies? It is better to share your hobbies and then tell them when you pursue them. The interviewer(s) would like to know whether you comprise your leisure time for work or vice versa. It is better to highlight how you maintain the balance. You say, I like reading a lot. I normally read for an hour before I go to sleep. It not only helps me to unwind but also gives me a perspective to understand life and increase productivity Q: What has been your greatest achievement? Mention the achievement that has motivated you in taking higher responsibility or has helped you in overcoming a fear in academic or profession life. In case you are a mid-level or senior level employee then highlight achievements in your professional life. Anything related to academic may not be welcome. It may also send a signal that you havent achieved much in your professional life. If you are fresher then try to highlight achievements during industrial training. You may also share information about any scholarship you got. Also share how that scholarship developed and shaped your career. If there had been any physical or mental reservation how you overcame it in your life. Q: What has been your greatest failure? Never say that you do not have any failure. Each and every individual in this world is bound to have some failure. Share your failure but do not go on sharing everything that you have failed in. You may always ask about the timing of the shifts in case you are not aware. If you have any particular shift preference then you may add in your answer. E.g. - I am comfortable working in shifts but given the permission I would like to add that I prefer to work in the morning and evening shift. Q: What is the thing you like the most in the world? Why? Share your liking, even if it means saying things like the smell of the rain is the thing you like in the world.

While addressing this question you may say, I had an inclination for the area of study from my high schools days. If the reason for the low marks is not asked then do not raise the issue. Q: Are you willing to travel? Do not jump into the answer and say yes or no. If you are not comfortable then let the interviewer(s) know the reason. In case this is due to any family obligation you may say, I do not mind traveling, but due to the ailing health of my I may not be able to travel in case if you feel that you may be able to travel in certain cases do mention it. Similarly, if you are happy in traveling then always ask for the degree of traveling, prior intimation about tour and other necessary information. Q: Why are you leaving the organization you work for? Do not say negative things about your present company and neither say things that would make the prospective company look inferior. Statements like, The organization I am working for is the best in engineering business, an industry leader is strict no.

This would send wrong signal that you are questioning the capability of the organization you have appeared for interview. It is better to say things like what you have learnt and how you feel this company is going to give you the platform to apply it. Also how the company would give you the chance to grow. You may start, In the last few years with my current company, I have learnt about the engineering technicalities of oil extracting in Off-shore rigs. I have also worked in the sites and honed my practical knowledge. With this company venturing into the oil rigs, I believe I would fit the requirement.
