RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation Service, this coming Wednesday, April 9, Paulist Center Chapel ---1pm and 7pm. If you prefer to go to confession/reconciliation using the kneeler and screen separator please plan to come on any Saturday (except for Holy Saturday) at 5pm in the church.

CHILD EDUCATION WORKSHOP

The Archdiocesan Child Abuse Policy is an effort to ensure the safety of children entrusted to our care. The policy focuses on the protection of children and the prevention of child abuse. With that in mind, we will offer a workshop for Religious Education teachers, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends---anyone dealing with childrento identify warning signs, opportunities, who to contact and what to teach children. Sunday, April 27, 10:40-11:50am in Carvlin Hall. If you have questions, please call or email Barbara Harrison in the parish office.

PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Nominations for parish councils are open, there are four vacancies. Nominations forms are available now through May 11th. If you are nominating someone other then yourself for the position, be sure you ask them beforehand if they are willing to serve.

GET TO KNOW OUR POPE:

Movie Screening, Munchies, & Discussion. Our new pope has been in the chair of St. Peter for just over a year, but he certainly isn't just sitting around! Making headlines seemingly every day, he's taken the world by storm in his new role. Now is a good time to find out who Pope Francis is and how he became head of the Roman Catholic Church. Please join us for a viewing and discussion of a short (50 min) documentary film about Pope Francis. We'll have home-made baked goods to munch on! Palm Sunday, (April 13th) at 11:00am in Carvlin Hall.

CRS RICE BOWL REFLECTION: HAITI

This Week, CRS Rice bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of Haiti. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic principle call to family, community and participation, and reminded that, as social beings, we are called to seek God together. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Haiti and all around the world, that our families and communities be strengthened and blessed.

There have been changes to this program and Safeway no longer accepts credit cards nor a debit card that is processed as a credit (no pin number used). If at all possible, if we all would plan ahead and have cash or your checkbook available when shopping at Safeway, St. Philip will benefit from your purchases. The donations have dropped significantly due to this change and eScrips requirement to register annually. The office can help with the registration process. One last suggestion is to provide your email address to the office and eScrip reminders and new features will be mailed to you periodically to keep on top of any additional changes and/or promotions to the program. BLOOD DONATION THANKS

Thank you to all who came in to donate blood on Mar. 16th. We had 21 people in the door, with 16 pints donated, helping up to 48 people. Five people were deferred and we had one first time donor.

Is Weeping Wimpy? The therapy of tears

One of the most surprising parts of the story of the raising of Lazarus is the part where Jesus breaks down and cries. Why should this be so? Perhaps it is the sight of a man weeping in public that surprises us. In the great American myth of rugged individualism, men are not supposed to cry. A real man is supposed to take his lumps and triumph through the pain. Like the ancient Stoics of Greek and Roman times, real men, we are told, must hide their anger, their sadness, and even their joy. Our own culture is not comfortable with tears. Tears tend to be seen as a sign of weakness. But what is so natural, right, and healthy as tears when in the midst of deep pain and suffering or in deep grief when a loved one dies? Besides, tears have a great therapeutic value, provided of course they are genuine, and not merely sentimental. Jesus did not conceal his feelings. The Gospel makes this clear. He was moved with pity on seeing the plight of the ordinary people. He wept over the city of Jerusalem because he saw that it was heading for destruction. And he wept on the way to the tomb of Lazarus. The Gospel story also shows the anguish of Martha and Mary at the death of their brother. But they were not afraid to express their grief, though they did so in contrasting ways. In spite of everything, Martha somehow continued to function, forcing herself to go on with life. Mary, on the other hand, retreated into her shell. We must help the process. We must try to help ourselves. We must allow others to help us. Jesus accompanied Martha and Mary and shared their grief. Grief is one of the strongest emotions we are ever likely to experience. Some are embarrassed about expressing their grief in public. Believing that they are expected to bear up, they suppress their grief. It is now generally accepted that to suppress grief is not only bad but dangerous, and may lead to serious emotional problems later on. The way to deal with grief is not to run away from it, or pretend it isn't there, but to face it and work through it with as much honesty and love as one can. Shed tears are bitter, but unshed tears are even more bitter. Faith is our great ally in dealing with grief, and pain and suffering as well as the reality of death. Faith doesn't mean we have all the answers. And it doesn't dispense us from the painful work of grieving. But it does add a vital element to our grieving. That element is hope. We grieve as people who believe that pain and suffering and even death doesn't have the last word.

Easter Flowers: We are once again inviting you to donate monies for our Easter flowers. There are envelopes available on the back counter for your donation. Please put your name & the name of the person you would like the flowers donated in honor of. You can put this in the offertory, drop it in the office, or mail it to the office. Thank you for helping decorate the Church for our Easter celebration.

RETURN RICE BOWLS!

Rice Bowls can be returned beginning next week. There will be a large Rice Bowl on the counter to place your rice bowls in. Thank you for your Lenten contribution to this program. Many people around the world and even here in the United States will be fed thanks to your donations.

THIRD SCURTINY
This Sunday is the Third of Three Scrutinies (rites of self-searching/self-examination) with our adult elect (Marcus Reynolds) who will be Baptized at the Holy Saturday vigil. Also on Holy Saturday, Stacey Heyworth will enter into Full Communion with the Catholic Church. Please pray for these individuals as they continuing their conversion journey.

PAULIST APPEAL COLLECTION

The Annual Paulist Appeal Collection is this weekend. Materials are in the pews. Please reflect and pray that you can be as generous as possible in supporting the works of the Paulist Fathers Community, as well as expenses for seminarians education and care for older Paulists and senior ministry.
