English: FAIRYTALES AND FABLES

Final Project

Statement of Purpose: This unit was designed to be used in a third grade English class. This unity will take approximately 3 weeks to complete. Students will read and learn about various fairy tales and fables and identify the differences between them. Students will focus on improving their reading comprehension through many different activities and techniques. All students will participate in class by taking turns reading stories out loud, through in-class discussions, hands-on activities, quizzes, and acting out favorite stories with small groups. Students will also write journal entries about each story or fable to ensure they are comprehending the text. At the end of the unit, students will write their own fable or fairy tale to display their understanding of the differences between them.

Michigan Content Standards: Students should be able to read and comprehend literature at the high end of their grade level independently and proficiently by the end of the school year.

R.CM.03.01 connect personal knowledge, experiences, and understanding of the world to themes and perspective text through oral and written responses.

R.CM.03.02 retell in sequence the story elements of grade-level narrative text and major idea(s) and relevant details of grade-level informational text.

S.DS.03.02 discuss narratives (e.g., folktales, fables, realistic ction), conveying the story grammar (e.g., characters thoughts and motivation, setting, plot, story level theme) and explain why the story is worthwhile and how it is relevant to the storyteller or the audience.

Learning Targets: I. Understand themes in text and be able to relate the themes to personal experiences, cultural events, and prior knowledge. Students will be able to relate personal experiences and cultural events to fables and fairytales. II. Understand the sequences that stories are told in and understand the main focus of each reading. Students will be able to retell stories in order of what happened first and explain the most important thing they read. III. Understand that each story has a purposeful meaning behind it and that morals appear in many of the readings. Students will be able to share with others why fairy tales and fables are important for each society.

Pre-Unit Assessment Do you like fairy tales? What is your favorite fairy tale? Do you know what a fable is? Have you ever read a fairy tale or have you only watched the movies? Do you think they will be different? Do you enjoy reading? Do you know what a moral of story is? Do you know what the difference is between a fairy tale and a fable? Fairy Tales and Fables Unit Test The final test of the unit will test your knowledge of fairy tales and fables discussed in class as well as new readings in this assessment. Over the course of this unit we have covered many different types of fairy tales and fables and discussed them thoroughly in the classroom. Be prepared to think critically and do your best! Directions: To be read to the classroom. This test is divided into three separate sections. The first portion will be true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, and matching. The second section will be short response questions. The final portion of the test will be essay questions. After completing the exam, please complete the self-evolution sheet attached to the back. No points will be given or taken away for answers on the self-evaluation, it is only there to help me understand what I can do to help you learn better. Performance Task Assessments 1.

Goal: Your task is to get into small groups and work together to write a fairy tale. After your group has completed this task, you will assign roles and prepare to present your fairy tale to the class. Your performance should last about 5-7 minutes.

Role: Your job is to work together with all students in your group. All students will participate in both creating the fairy tale and acting it out.

Audience: Your target audience is your fellow classmates and teacher.

Situation: The challenge involves working together with your group and incorporating all ideas. You can write your fairy tale based on any time period.

Product or performance: You will create an original fairy tale and perform it for your classmates. Your group will turn in a paper with your written fairy tale.

Standards for Success: The performance needs to include all members in your group equally. Your work will be judged by your fellow group members to ensure that all students are working together. Your group will also turn in a written version of the fairy tale for credit.

2. Goal: Your task is to research your favorite fairy tale and give a presentation on why it is your favorite fairy tale to the class.

Role: Your job is to find a fairy tale you enjoy and give a presentation on why you enjoy it.

Role: Your job is to create a poster that depicts the fairy tale accurately and looks interesting.

Audience: You will present your poster to the classroom and explain why you chose to design that way.

Situation: The challenge involves creating a poster that makes the fairy tale appear appealing and is a good teaser.

Product or performance: Your final project will be a movie theater poster and you will stand in front of the class and share your design.

Standards for success: The poster needs to be clutter-free, laid out in an appealing fashion, and would encourage other people to read the story.
