Our History
Facts and Figures

The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 by

scholars and entrepreneurs. Over the years, it has been the
home institution to most prominent professors, including:
mathematician Francesco Brioschi, the first President of
Politecnico di Milano; Luigi Cremona and Giulio Natta, both
of whom were Nobel Prize winners of Chemistry in 1963.
As testament to these numerous achievements in its history,
the Politecnico di Milano is now one of the most reknown
European universities in Engineering, Architecture and
Industrial Design.

The educational policy of the Politecnico di Milano offers
different curricula designed according to the highest academics
standards.
The Politecnico di Milano has approximately 40,000 students
and more than 1200 professors as permanent staff in its seven
campuses located in the Lombardy Region, which makes it the
largest institution in Italy for Engineering, Architecture and
Industrial Design
The Politecnico di Milano is organized into seventeen
departments of nine networked Schools: six of them relate to
various branches of engineering and three to architecture, urban
planning and industrial design. Each School at Politecnico di
Milano offers a number of courses articulated into three main
academic levels:
“Laurea” – Bachelor of Science: The Bachelor of Science is
an undergraduate degree obtained after a three-year course
of study and aims to provide a solid foundation in the core
scientific subjects as well as a more specialized, professional
training.
“Laurea Magistrale- Master of Science: The Master of Science
is awarded after two years of study which aim to provide
advanced training in highly specialized fields. During the
second year, students are expected to attain work experience
through an internship. When students obtain the B.Sc. degree,
they have the option to continue their studies by applying with
the Master of Science.
“Dottorato di Ricerca” - Ph.D. Program: The PhD program
requires a candidate to hold a Master of Science degree or
equivalent. The PhD is awarded after three years of study and
it aims at developing research competences in manufacturing
firms, service companies, public bodies, and universities.
The school of Architecture offers undergraduate and graduate
programmes in Architecture and Urban Planning. The school’s
international policy has been targeting the Master of Science
programmes since 2006, and the Phd programmes since 2008.
Also, starting from 2009 the Bachelor of Science programmes
will be offered in English and opened to an international
audience.

skills and responsibilities in which planners need to consolidate
in order to promote effective and viable solutions.
