I first knew that I wanted to go into science when I was 7, that was the year that I asked my parents for a lab coat and test tube set for my birthday. They were always very supportive of my choices, and encouraged me to pursue my passion. However, looking back, I distinctly remember multiple occasions when I would tell other people that I wanted to be a scientist when I grew up and quite a few of them told me that I should reconsider because only men became scientists. As a stubborn, young girl I made it my mission to prove them wrong, one way or another. In high school, I maintained good grades in all of my classes and I excelled in science, but I wanted to learn more. One day, my biology teacher, Mrs. Warren, handed me an advertisement for a new program called EmpowerEd that would give me an opportunity to learn about more about science than I could in school. I begged my parents to take me to one of the information sessions. I remember Darla Woodson, the vice president, leading my mom and I around their headquarters and showing us the various rooms used for the different field programs they offered, but I only wanted to see one thing: the labs! When she finally showed us the science labs I thought that I mustve been dreaming. There was more than one and they were better equipped than the lab in my school. I was so excited because there were so many tools Continued on next page... 1
and instruments that were unfamiliar to me. Needless to say, shortly after that day I became a member of EmpowerEd, and I was one of the first girls to join the EmpowerEd Science program. Mr. Dancy was the volunteer that taught me and because of him and EmpowerEd I was able to learn things that my school couldnt fit into the curriculum. We would perform different labs every few weeks and I was able to do hese things at my own pace with Mr. Dancys help. I was spending all of my free time in the lab Eventually, Mr. Dancy encouraged me to enter various competitions in New York. I won the Garber Science and Research Competition with my review paper on the simplification of the protein-folding puzzle and my paper was published in a scientific journal. He also helped me in achieving the RISE internship, which will give me the chance to work at some of the top research institutions in Germany for 2 to 3 months next summer. If it hadnt been for Mr. Dancy and EmpowerEd I wouldnt be pursuing my B.S. in Nanoscale Science at the SUNY College of Nanoscale Technology and I wouldnt have had the chance to explore my love of science. EmpowerEd is an amazing program that helped me to achieve my dreams. The volunteers and staff have taught me more than just science; theyve showed me that determination and passion will get you anywhere. The knowledge I gained through my many hours in the lab has helped to give me a leg up on the competition and now, thanks to EmpowerEd, I can confidently say that I am going to be a scientist when I leave college.
