Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Good design must always express a vision. Something one can witness once again at the third edition of Design Days Dubai. Just like most artists, Audi design seeks inspiration everywhere. Ideas might arise from observing an innovative house, a classic piece of furniture or a sensational dress. The Audi designers, not unlike an artist, have to have their ngers on the pulse of the times and are guided by a variety of inuencesbe it from nature, architecture, art or lm. As global design patron and responsible employer, Audi supports regional cultural arts at its locations. For the third year the brand with the four rings is an exclusive sponsor for Design Days Dubai, which will showcase the path-breaking works of leading design galleries and the most innovative of designers from around the world. As a progressive car manufacturer, Audi constantly develops its design philosophy with each new generation of models. Audis rened design language and philosophy will focus on a strong link between technology and design. You can experience this rsthand at this years Design Days Dubai with the display of our new Audi A8, where design and technology mesh perfectly. Audis most elegantly designed car will be displayed in the UAE for the rst time. The Audi A8 features Matrix LED technology. The high-beam comprises 25 individual light-emitting diodes per unit which can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation. Additional features of the new headlights are the intelligent cornering light, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals. The lighting system uses predictive route data to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation. It is a great pleasure for Audi to once again be part of Design Days Dubai. Sincerely, Trevor Hill Managing Director Audi Middle East

Founded in 2011 and located in a renovated former steel factory in Beiruts industrial Quarantine District, Art Factum Gallery is devoted to presenting all forms of contemporary art and design in a fresh way. With contemporary art, the gallery focuses on bringing international artists into the artisticcultural scene of Beirut, and also projects itself onto a wider stage through participation in several international art fairs and events, as well as maintaining tight bonds with several international galleries and institutions. These local and international collaborations ensure the spreading of the artistic message to the massesone of the gallerys main motives. As for design, with Lebanons artistic spotlight shifting slightly towards the more utilitarian and three-dimensional aspect of art forms and products, Art Factum Gallery chooses mostly to endorse local designers. The gallerys annual design show serves to introduce new talents, as well as promoting designers who have already launched their careers, all serving to emphasise the value and dynamism of contemporary Lebanese design. It is also important to highlight that the designers and the gallery itself mostly use local materials and crafts for the production of the design pieces.

Carwan Gallery was created when architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas BellavanceLecompte joined their complementary cultural backgrounds to propose an extraordinary vision for contemporary design in the Middle East. The gallerys rst objective was to foster the singular relationship between designers and craftsmen through commissions. As a result, more than 15 designers from all over the world found inspiration in Middle Eastern crafts to reinvent traditional techniques and create unique contemporary objects. After three years of exhibitions in international design fairs, art centres and museums, Carwan recently opened a new space in Lebanon at Genor Centre in Clemenceau to showcase contemporary objects in limited editions. The gallery also provides creative and design-centered consultancy to collectors, architects and interior designers, offering the possibility to receive site-specic tailored services or installations.

Design Auction (Seoul Auction Est. 1998) held by _croft, was a chance to prove that wellmade design sold popularly as art objects. The event was praised as a new platform for communication between art and design, and has now become one of most renowned art and design auctions in Korea. _croft has planned various exhibitions since the companys founding, introducing the work of up-and-coming designers, as well as timeless classics from all over the world to a Korean audience. The gallery aims to highlight emerging designers and brands, and to inuence design trends by presenting new projects and inspiring design objects.

Erastudio Apartment-Gallery was established in 2010 by founder and architect Patrizia Tenti. The philosophy of Erastudiodesign as architectureis reected in the structure of its two spaces in the historical building of Via Palermo 5 in Milan. Each space is restored according to the concept, less is more. The name Erastudio Apartment also recalls the atmosphere where the design works are presented. The gallery focuses exclusively on unique pieces, prototypes, artists proofs, limited editions and special projects, displaying works from such historical masters as Ettore Sottsass, Piero Fornasetti and Carlo Scarpa, as well as that of young designers. Erastudio works in between architecture and site-specic design, providing consultancy and assistance on the interaction of design pieces with a particular environment. This has given rise to unique collaborations with artists and architects such as Gaetano Pesce and Vincenzo De Cotiis, and designers such as Gunjan Guptapresented for the rst time at Design Days Dubai 2013for the realisation of projects exclusive to the gallery. Since 2012, Erastudio has been an active participant in the worlds best fairs for collectible design.

In Tuscany, between Pisa and Carrara, at the foot of the marble quarries from which masterpieces have been extracted, is the town of Pietrasanta. In the heart of this small town, 100 metres from the Piazza del Duomo, where one can almost still hear the footsteps of the great Michelangelo Buonarroti, is Sabrina Landini Atelier & Gallery, where ancient materials such as bronze and marble take the form of the gallery's 'beaux objets'. Designed, produced and assembled one by one through the ancient techniques of Tuscan artisans, each of the beaux objets in this space are unique. Made with natural materials, these diverse works, which like a bridge connect the past to the present, convey substance, beauty and a sense of style.

Southern Guild was established in 2008 by Trevyn and Julian McGowan to provide a platform for collectible, limited-edition South African design. Each year diverse talents are invited to produce new work, including the country's biggest stars in addition to promising up-and-coming design talents. The gallery also promotes design pieces by the most prominent gures from the worlds of art, craft, jewellery and architecture. South African design is artisanal, hand-made and cerebral; the gallery's designers work in a very personal, exploratory way, with deep cultural relevance and little interest in passing trends. Become a benchmark for quality and originality, Southern Guild encourages collaboration and discourse, aiming to stimulate and provoke the local design industry. The gallery cohesively and comprehensively showcases the most important contemporary design from South Africa, at the best fairs around the world, with the ongoing support of ArcelorMittal South Africa, Absa Private Banking and the Department of Trade and Industry.

With continual evolution and constant discovery being key elements of Design Days Dubais philosophy, the fair this year introduces a new section called 'Discover'. Its guiding principle is to focus on the emergence of a contemporary design scene in a single countryin particular, a country that is better known for traditional design. This idea of a rediscovery or rebirth of design within an established design culture is a more intriguing and less obvious approach than focusing on a country where a consciousness of design is only beginning to emerge. Dedicated to France in 2014, the debut edition of Discover is a joint initiative with the Institut Franais in the UAE and will present four Paris-based galleries: Galerie Gosserez, Galerie S.Bensimon, Next Level Galerie and Ymer & Malta. The four are distinguished not only by their youth as institutionsnone has been established for more than ve yearsbut also by the freshness of their approach and willingness to challenge boundaries with the artists they represent and the works they commission. Although the galleries will present mostly work by French artistdesigners, thus highlighting the emergence of a new generation in their country, nationality is not a criterion. Rather, through the artists and works presentedregardless of their originsthe galleries will express a specically French point of view on contemporary design as an evolution from the countrys long artistic and aesthetic tradition. For this reason the Discover galleries will not be separated from the other exhibitors. As Design Days Dubai has always demonstrated, by presenting the avant-garde alongside modern classics, the cutting-edge of design is not a world of its own, but simply part of the cultural continuum.

Created in 2013 by Elaine NG Yan Ling and rst presented to the public by Isabelle Pascal as part of the spring 2013 installation at Wuhao Curated Shop in Beijing, 'Climatology' celebrates natures survival tactics and reects the changing seasons. Originally designed for a Beijing sitea former imperial gardenand engineered to the citys climate, 'Climatology' is a new series of experimental smart textiles derived from the design concept of Naturology. Layers of veneer are combined with fabric, thermo-chromatic resin and reective surfaces to create objects that adapt to uctuations in light, temperature and humidity. Each piece, inspired by the natural living behaviour of the desert plant Selaginella Lepidoplylla (also known as the resurrection plant or false rose of Jericho), is handcrafted and set in shape. As the materials mature, the objects begin to work together, changing according to their surroundings. They work individually or as a group, affected by the memory of their construction and responding to natures invisible energy. About the designer: A graduate of Londons Central Saint Martins School, TED Fellow and Founder of The Fabrick Lab in Hong Kong, Elaine Ng Yan Ling is a British-Chinese smart textile designer. Her work, based on bio-mimicry and combining traditional crafts with modern technologies, has been exhibited at the V&A in London, Harbour Front Centre in Toronto, Milan Design Week with Lidewij Edelkoort, TextielMuseum in Tilburg, Netherlands, Espace EDF Art Foundation in Paris and at Wuhao Beijing.

TheObsessiveDrafter
'TheObsessiveDrafter' is a tech-art installation that questions both creation and representation. A large robotic arm made of 3D-printed parts, aluminium tubes, stepper motors, drives and controllers, it draws murals and portraits on walls and is able to work on a very large scale. 'TheObsessiveDrafter' was designed, programmed and produced by Guillaume Crdoz and Nareg Karaoghlanian. It is autonomous and has the ability to feel human presence, establish eye contact and immediately draw a portrait of a person standing in front of it. During Design Days Dubai, the machine will draw a seven-by-three-metre mural over ve continuous days. Every time a human interrupts it, 'TheObsessiveDrafter' will pause its work on the large piece, establish eye contact and then draw the portrait of the person, before continuing its main work. Because the pauses put the machine at risk of not having time to nish the main work, it groans at the disturbances. About the designers: Guillaume Crdoz is a multidisciplinary architect who, for 15 years, has taught and researched numerous projects. Prior to studying architecture, Crdoz was educated in the ne arts. A guest professor at Universit de Montral, associate to research and creation Lab at Universit du Qubec & Montral and artist resident at the Society for Art and Technologies (SAT), he has also collaborated with numerous international architecture studios on competitions and projects. His main occupation at present is running a 3D Printing & Rapid Manufacturing workshop in Beirut, the rst of its kind in the Middle East. Crdoz is also the founder of Mimaj, an architectural visualisation company, and Ghouyoum, an architecture design practice. Nareg Karaoghlanian is a uid mechanics engineer who teaches and directs a laboratory at the American University of Beirut.

by Rolf BrugginK (Studio Rolf.fr), presented by Galerie Judy Straten, IN COOPERATION WITH THE GENTEREAL CONSULATE OF THE NETHERLANDS
Taking place daily during Design Days Dubai, the onsite performances by Rolf Bruggink (StudioRolf.fr) are about transforming a saucer into a seat. This eccentric concept embodies the theme of symbiosis, which is central to the Netherlands-based designer/ architects work. Through simple and rational processes, Bruggink transforms the prosaic into the poetically expressive. Bruggink will make his stools from concrete composed of sand from the desert, combined with local ceramics. With these two local products he will make a range of contemporary pieces by combining different colours of sand with different designs of saucers. The process consists of making a mould, placing the saucer and concrete inside of it and, eventually, removing the mould for drying. During the fair, visitors will be able to observe the different stages of the process every day.
