TWILIGHT FEVER

On Monday, November 9th 2009, Hollywood celeb Nikki Reed, star of popular movie Twilight surprised 20 All-Star girls at Vista Middle School when she came to visit them on campus. Nikki Reed taught the girls, who are all in ASAS-LAs sewing program, how to play a new video game called Style Lab, where the user is able to design their own clothing and jewelry. Several hand-held Ubisoft video game consoles were brought to the event and donated to the program. Nikki was sweet, friendly and hands-on when showing the girls how to use the program. She also chatted to the giddy young ladies about her upcoming movie, New Moon, signed autographs for them and even answered questions about boys & friendship. An ice-cream sundae bar was set up at the event and the girls later enjoyed their treats, eating and chatting away with Nikki. There was select media coverage of the event which included: Entertainment Tonight; photos spreads in Us Weekly and Life & Style magazines, and also coverage in numerous Hollywood celebrity blogs!

Thanks to the generosity of LeBron James and Lionsgate Studios, nearly 200 ASAS-LA students attended a special screening of Lebrons new film More Than a Game, which focused on commitment to athletic goals and team mentoring. Held at The Grove theatres, students enjoyed the movie eating free popcorn and soda. A few lucky students even got to take pictures with Lebron on the red carpet! The movie inspired several of the students that attended. An All-Star seventh grader that saw the film said: Life is a climb. I really loved the movie More than a Game with LeBron James because everybody has their struggles. Lebron James inspired me because I used to play basketball and most of time, I did not make a shot and would get made fun of. I was also told that I was not good enough for basketball. When I saw the movie, it inspired me to keep tryingI am going to keep going with basketball!

Heritage High School conducted a canned food drive during the 2009 holiday season. The All-Stars collected over 1,200 canned goods for their second annual We C.A.R.E. (Conscious Actions Redefine Experiences) food drive. The non-perishable items were taken to the Womens Shelter in Downtown Los Angeles, which provides supportive housing for formerly homeless women. The food drive was a school-wide event organized by 20 All-Stars in the community outreach program known as The Heritage Group. There were also five other students from ASAS-LAs video/photography class that captured the philanthropic activities and document the field trip to the womens shelter. The All-Stars were responsible for collecting, counting, sorting, and packing the donated goods. The week before Thanksgiving, the All-Stars personally delivered the canned food to the Downtown Womens Shelter.

December 12, 2009 - Over 500 ASAS-LA middle school students from various neighborhoods in South Los Angeles joined students at Bell Gardens Intermediate for the schools D.R.E.A.M. (Determination, Resiliency, Empowerment, Achieve, Motivation) event. The annual function focuses on education and higher education and offers all attendees information about college prep and financial resource options. The family-friendly function also provided a great opportunity for the boys and girls in ASAS-LAs various programs to showcase their skills to their peers and family, including acting/drama performances, rock music performances, hip-hop and modern dance routines. All-Star staff from Bell Gardens Intermediate, Edison Middle School, Heritage College-Ready Academy, Huntington Park Academy, New Millennium Secondary School and Suva Intermediate, along with school administration, counselors, teachers, custodians, and the students parents helped make this an exciting event.

DREAM awarded one student from each school with The All-Star of The Year Award certificate, which was given to a student who has excelled in the classroom and has shown exceptional leadership through community service learning projects. DREAM focused on sending the message that higher education is a possibility, but individuals need to take it one step at a time to get there; starting with concentrating on graduating from middle school and high school. A special thanks to Jarritos, who sponsored drinks/giveaways/ street team items; long-time ASAS-LA partner, El Pollo Loco, who sponsored the food served; King of Kings Car Club, who provided a display of three old school, classic, low rider cars.

educate, enlighten & inspire!

On October 23rd, six lucky ASAS-LA students from Gertz High School joined Governor Schwarzenegger at the Nokia theatre to receive a donation from the NuSkin Foundation; a company committed to providing quality skin care that features only premium, wholesome ingredients. Thousands of people were on location to listen to the Governor speak about ASAS-LA and thank NuSkin for the generous donation of $100,000, which ensures continued opportunities for our students! The All-Star students then went on-stage with ASAS-LA President and Executive Director, Ana Campos to receive the check and received hearty applause from the audience. During this trying economic time, the wonderful donation enables our organization to continue our efforts in providing quality after-school programs to the youths of LA.

During the week of October 5th, 2009, 24 students from Odsherreds Efterskole High School located in Frevejle, Denmark joined the students of After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles at Belvedere Middle School . Their visit was intended to engage with their American peers and learn about cultural commonalities obtained through joint music and dance performances. The cultural fusion was aimed to teach and share the richness of the American music culture with others from different countries and cultures. Many students in Belvederes East LA community have never had the opportunity to travel away from their own community, so meeting international students was certainly a rewarding learning experience! Both Danish and Angelino students were rooted in music and performing arts disciplines. From Monday, October 5th, through Friday, October 9th, both teams conducted joint rehearsals and performances of rock and pop music. Dance students choreographed and performed modern, hip-hop and break dance routines together. The trip was organized by Al Campos, an LA native who has resided in Copenhagen for the past 20 years. Al wanted to give his Danish students and the Los Angeles middle schoolers the capacity to accept, understand and respect other cultures, saying, [it] can be learned by a shared passion for music, dance and the performing arts. The trip will certainly open many windows and doors for both groups of students.

Over the week of August 10th, All-Stars at Edison Middle School worked to gather recyclable cans, bottles, cardboard, clothing, paper and textiles in their neighborhoods to participate in a fun activity with Warner Bros. The arts & crafts recycling event highlighted the theme of kids doing positive things in their communities. All-Stars enjoyed making their creations that were eventually judged by their fellow peers.
