Scope

This standard covers the minimum requirements for materials and welding of machine parts. This standard is not applicable for pressure vessels and piping systems of machine units, and does not cover running tests or other functional tests of machines. Statements made in the purchase order (P.O.) and project specifications shall have priority over the requirements of this standard. It shall be noted that specific requirements for corrosive service apply additionally, if specified in the P.O.

This standard contains provisions which, through undated references in this text, constitute provisions of other publications. The normative references are cited at the respective part in the text and the publications are listed in annex A. Issues valid at the time of placement of order shall govern.

Definitions, Abbreviations
A company who has received a purchase order from Linde for the supply of a machine and its auxiliaries. Manufacturer of parts (materials) ordered by Vendor. Qualification of the Vendor and his Subvendors

The Vendor and his Subvendors shall operate a quality management system suitable for their work. Linde reserves the right to review the quality management systems at Vendors/Subvendors shops. Operating a quality management system implies that the Vendor as well as his Subvendors are using skilled and/or qualified personnel and are in possession of all necessary manufacturing and testing equipment, to handle the purchase order in a professional manner.

General Requirements for Materials

The general requirements for materials are defined in EN 1559-1, -2 and -3 and API 617, whichever is specified in the Purchase Order (P.O.) or other applicable project specifications.

5.1

Selection of Materials

Vendor is responsible to select proper materials suitable for the operating data specified by Linde for the machine, taking into account the requirements of this standard. Selected materials are subject to final acceptance by Linde. Materials according to other standards than EN or ASTM/API shall be specified by Vendor (with full chemical analysis, heat treatment, mechanical properties, testing, certification as well as reference to equivalent materials to above mentioned standards) together with his quotation, for acceptance by Linde. Chemical analysis, mechanical properties and tests shall fully conform to the material standards applied. In addition unalloyed C- and C-Mn-steel plates and forgings intended for welding operations shall meet the following requirements: Yield strength 370 N/mm (53 ksi) and tensile strength 500 N/mm (72 ksi) with minimum values each according to the material standard applied; Carbon content 0,25 %.

5.2

Cleaning, Grinding, Marking

Before non-destructive examination and/or assembly of the machine parts, each part shall be cleaned by pickling (free of chloride) or by other appropriate methods, to remove foreign materials, mill scale, etc. Grinding disks used on ferritic steels shall not be used on austenitic stainless steels or high nickel alloys. Major components shall be properly marked for traceability against material certificates.

Specific Requirements for Castings


Austenitic Steel Castings Spheroidal Cast Iron (Ferritic Ductile Iron)
EN 1563, but excluding type EN-GJS-600, 700, 800, 900; ASTM A 395; ASTM A 536, for non-critical parts only with prior approval by Linde. 90 % form VI as per EN ISO 945, for EN materials; 90 % of type I or II, ASTM A 247 plate I for ASTM materials.

Use of EN 1561 type EN-GJL-350 and ASTM A 278 Cl. 35 and higher need prior written approval by Linde. Grey cast iron EN 1561, type EN-GJL-200 and EN-GJL-250 and ASTM A 278 Cl. 20 and Cl. 25 may be used for piston-type compressor casings in liquefied gas service at temperatures not below -105 C, if the following is fulfilled: Hydrostatic pressure test with 1,5 times the maximum allowable working pressure, but not less than 20 psi (1,4 bar); Vendor shall submit to Linde references for the intended service for acceptance.

6.4

NDE of Castings

All sections have to be tested by a surface and volume examination method according to the specified standard. For the required standards for NDE and acceptance criteria of steel castings refer to table 1. NDE personnel shall be qualified according to table 2. In case of special requirements for the surface quality or the surface roughness, they will be specified in the project documents. For NDE the castings shall be sound and free from porosity, hot tears, shrink holes, cracks, scale, blisters and similar injurious defects. Reports for all NDE performed are required and shall be included into the final documentation. 7.1

Welded Parts and Repair Welding


Welding and Heat Treatment

Welding specifications shall be observed for each welding operation. Welding consumables shall be of similar analysis as the base material with comparable minimum tensile properties and sufficient toughness. The root of weld seams shall be removed to sound metal by flame cutting or chipping followed by grinding or machining. All fabricated castings, regardless of thickness, shall be postweld heat treated. No welding is permitted after final heat treatment. Otherwise re-heat treatment is required. All welding on spheroidal cast iron as well as grey cast iron require prior written approval by Linde.

7.2

Qualifications

Welders, personnel for NDE and welding procedures shall be qualified prior to start of welding according to table 2. 7.3

Repair Welding of Castings

All repairs shall be made in accordance with the applicable welding specification (refer to Para 7.2). The defects shall be removed to sound metal by flame cutting or chipping followed by grinding or machining. After removal of defects the area shall be examined by MT or PT. Major repairs of defects as specified below require prior written acceptance by Linde: a) 40 % of thickness or b) depth 60 mm or c) length 150 mm. A detailed description of the defect and a quality plan for the planned repair work shall be submitted to LINDE for acceptance. Major repairs shall be documented (position, area, weld details, heat treatment as well as non-destructive examination).

7.4

Non-destructive Examination of Welds

For construction welds and repair welds on casting repairs the requirements for NDE incl. applicable acceptance criteria are defined in table 3. Reports for all NDE performed are required and shall be available during inspections. The NDE reports shall be included into the final documentation.

Testing, Inspection, Certification

Linde will specify the required testing and certification for machine parts. Linde may participate in tests and inspection of machine parts at Vendors or Subvendors shop, as deemed necessary and/or if specified in Vendors quality control plan / fabrication and inspection plan.
