General information RMF Systems

System contamination In the hydraulic market it is an accepted fact that contamination causes 80% of all mechanical failures. This contamination results from the presence of solid particles such as metal, sand and rubber in oil. Mainstream filters are incapable of removing the smallest particles, smaller than 2 micron (better known as silt). Fluctuations in the supply and the resulting changing conditions (flow and pressure surges) mean that these filters cannot carry out fine filtration; most of the silt remains in the system and affects the chemical composition of the oil. Changes in temperature cause water vapour to condense, resulting in unwanted water in the oil. The presence of this free water helps to accelerate the deterioration of the oil. The combination of water and small copper particles will also create a catalytic effect which can shorten oil life considerably. All these problems lead to reduced oil usage life and increase component wear, maintenance cost and machine down time. Removing silt and preventing the formation of free water can combat these problems and reduce the operating cost.

Micro filtration At the heart of the RMF Off-line and By-pass filter is the unique micro filter element. This filter works according to the radial through-flow principle. As it has a filter fineness of 0.5 micron, it is able to remove the smallest of contamination particles (silt) from the oil. The filter material is composed primarily of cellulose, which is produced by a special wrapping method. This material is capable of retaining solid particles and absorbing water. This helps to prevent the chemical deterioration of the oil and the formation of various acids and sludge. A complete range of glass fibre pleated elements in 1, 3 and 5 micron is also available, including high water retention elements. Air conditioning Water vapour in reservoirs condenses due to temperature changes and cause not only oxidation of the oil, but can also lead to serious mechanical wear in the system. Standard air breathers remove a certain amount of solid particle contamination from the air but allow water vapour to pass through freely. The special RMF Air conditioners ensure that incoming air is first dried and then filtered, allowing only clean dry air to enter the reservoir.

Off-line filters
RMF Off-line filter units can be applied to every imaginable industrial application where hydraulic or lubrication systems are present. An integrated pump-motor unit draws fluid out of the tank, filters it and pumps clean oil back into the system. Off-line filters can continue to work even when the main system is not in use. Element change can also be done without interfering with the main system. The standard range offers filter units for reservoirs with a capacity of up to 11,000 litres. Choices of electrical or air motors are available to suit all industrial requirements and a large selection of filter elements makes it possible to customize the unit to every specific application. If required pre-filters can fitted to every type. The Off-line filter units are very simple to install. Over the years, RMF Systems have developed considerable experience in cleansing hydraulic and lubrication systems, helping to keep them clean and reduce down time. Successful applications can be found in the following industries: - steel; - plastic injection moulding; - power generation; - marine; - pulp & paper; - cement; - flight simulator.

Heated Off-line filters

The Heated unit is a unique progression of the Off-line filter series. The filtration of high viscosity oils, in both hydraulic and lubrication systems, is an almost impossible task for fine filters as the thickness of these oils block almost all normal filters. The RMF Heated unit warms the oil in a specific manner, allowing the viscosity to be reduced to a level which will permit fine filtration without the oil being exposed to too high temperatures that could cause overheating and burning of the oil, rendering it useless. An internal labyrinth in the heater tube ensures the fluid has a long duration of stay to increase contact time with the heating element achieving maximum possible temperature transfer. An adjustable thermostat allows exact temperature settings while a maximum thermostat prevents overheating. The Heated units have proved their worth over a long period and are frequently applied to: - gearbox lubrication systems; - wind power drive systems; - outdoor hydraulic systems; - marine hydraulic systems.

By-pass filters
The RMF By-pass filter units are especially designed for mobile applications in the hydraulic and/or transmission systems. In the absence of a pumped system, the oil is drawn from the main system by means of a specially designed and integrated pressure compensated flow control valve. The amount of oil extracted from the main system at any time is insignificant ensuring that it will not affect the working of the main system. Most commonly used biodegradable oils in the mobile sector are suitable for filtration with RMF filter elements. The By-pass filters can also be equipped with an additional special spin-on water absorbing pre-filter. They can accommodate a range of different filter elements to suit any specific requirement. Over the years, RMF Systems have developed considerable experience in cleansing hydraulic and transmissions systems, helping to keep them clean, extend equipment life and reduce cost of ownership (operating costs). Successful applications include: - excavators; - wheel loaders; - forestry machines; - asphalting machines; - cement mixers; - aircraft ground support equipment; - sugar cane harvesters; - agricultural machines.

Air conditioners
Standard air breathers remove a limited amount of solid particle contamination from the air, but allow water vapour to pass through freely. RMF Air conditioners (desiccant breathers) are highly effective in removing both solid particles and water vapour from the air. The RMF Air conditioner allows tanks to breathe clean, dry air. The revolutionary Z-R gel granules dry the air before it enters the oil tank. This dry air is then filtered by a 3 micron glass fibre (replaceable) spin-on air filter. The air which enters the oil tank is then clean and dry. The uptake of moisture can be observed by the change in colour of the indicator granules in the Z-R gel. They turn from ruby red (active) at the beginning to a very light orange at saturation (replace). The Z-R gel granules are completely replaceable, non toxic and non carcinogenic. An optional contamination indicator shows when the air filter is in need of replacement. RMF Air conditioners can be applied to hydraulic drive systems, gearboxes, diesel storage tanks and a wide variety of other uses. Examples of successful RMF Air conditioner applications can be found in the: - steel industry; - paper industry; - cement/concrete industry; - petrochemical industry; - aircraft industry; - wind energy industry; - mining industry; - plastic industry; - maritime industry.

The advantages of RMF Systems

Less malfunctions The tolerances between moving parts in servo valves and proportional valves are constantly reducing. The result is that even the smallest amounts of silt can cause damage to the system. RMF filters remove this silt. Protection of expensive main stream filters RMF Systems filters are applied in By-pass or Off-line configurations and constantly clean the oil from the reservoir. The oil which reaches the main stream filter is therefore cleaner and allows longer usage life of this expensive filter. The main stream filter then acts primarily as an emergency filter. Less frequent oil changes Increasingly strict environmental laws in the area of oil changes, oil storage and the disposal of used oil lead to corresponding cost increases. RMF filters mean less oil changes, and therefore less costs. Extended usable life of the oil Frequent oil changes are generally the result of chemical deterioration of the oil caused by the oil oxidation process. This process is brought into action by the presence of silt. If water is also present, this acts as a catalyst and the oxidation process is accelerated. RMF filters remove silt AND water from the oil. Less machine down time Reduction of defects caused by worn components and less frequent oil changes mean an increase in production time.

Air conditioners
Condensation in reservoirs Hydraulic and lubricating oils must be kept free from contamination and water. Most fluid reservoirs must be able to breathe, thus allowing water vapour and solid contaminants to enter. Temperature fluctuations in the reservoir will cause this water vapour to condense which will not only cause oxidation of the oil, but can also lead to considerable mechanical damage. Filtration and drying: a single process Standard air breathers remove some of the solid particles but allow water vapour in the air to pass freely. The RMF Air conditioner deals effectively with both so reservoirs can breath clean, dry air. The air is first dried by passage through a column packed with Z-R gel granules. The dried air is then passed through a pleated synthetic fibre filter element (replaceable spin-on type) where solid particles are removed, so that the air reaching the reservoir is both clean and dry. Monitoring The uptake of moisture can be observed by the change in colour of the indicator granules in the Z-R gel. They turn from ruby-red (active) to light orange (replace). The Z-R gel granules are completely replaceable, non toxic and non carcinogenic. An optional contamination indicator shows when the air filter is in need of replacement. Active coal RMF Air conditioners can be fitted with a combination of Z-R gel and active coal, the active coal will eliminate oil vapour and the smell, it will also prevent the Z-R gel from being contaminated with this oil damp.

Atmospherically closed The RMF range also offers some Air conditioners for gearbox applications which have spring loaded (0.01 bar) check valves fitted in the base in opposing directions, opening only whilst inhaling or exhaling. This way there is no atmospheric contact with the air and the Z-R gel under static conditions increasing the lifetime of the drying agent. Benefits RMF Air conditioner Reducing water contamination level prolongs the life of the additive package and reduces oxidation of the oil and bearing surfaces. Eliminates rusting due to condensation. Reduces machine downtime. Extends the machines useful life. Reduces cost of ownership. Applications RMF Air conditioners can be used on hydraulic power units, lube and oil tanks, gearboxes, diesel fuel tanks and storage tanks for biodegradable fluids. Industries that are successfully applying Air conditioners include: steel industry, aviation industry, forestry industry, pulp & paper industry, cement industry, petrochemical industry and mining industry.

By-pass filters
RMF systems RMF Systems radial micro filter units are characterized by their extremely efficient filter elements with a fineness of 0.5 micron. If required, different micron sizes are available to suit any specific application. The By-pass filters can also be equipped with an additional special water absorbing prefilter. In case of extreme water contamination, these water absorbing spin-on cans will remove most of the water prior to the fluid reaching the cellulose element. RMF By-pass filters are specially designed for mobile hydraulic installations and are available in single or double units which are equally suitable for OEM use and retro-fitting. The By-pass filter comes equipped with an integrated pressure compensated flow control valve. This valve bleeds oil from the main hydraulic system, passes this through the filter after which it is returned to the hydraulic reservoir. The amount of oil extracted from the main system at any time is insignificant ensuring that it will not affect the working of the main system. Most commonly used biodegradable oils in the mobile sector are suitable for filtration with RMF filter elements. Economical The hydraulic market accepts that 80% of mechanical failures are caused by contamination in the system. The RMF By-pass filters attack this contamination at source and in addition to solid particles, these filters are also capable of removing water from the oil. This prevents the catalytic reaction of water and solid particle contamination, resulting in extended useable oil life. The use of RMF filters means less defects, less maintenance, and less wear and tear of the hydraulic components.

Applications RMF By-pass filter units can be fitted to every imaginable mobile application where hydraulic and/or transmission systems are present. Installation is very simple, the filter housing provides mounting slots on all four sides and the pressure and return connections are available on the side and the back of the By-Pass unit. In recent years RMF Systems have developed a great deal of experience in cleaning and keeping clean hydraulic and transmission systems on: excavators, wheel loaders, forestry machines, asphalt machines, concrete pumps, aviation ground support equipment and agricultural machines. Advantages Extremely clean oil due to high filtration effi ciency. Prevention of channel forming by radial filtration direction. Large dirt and water holding capacity. Compact and easy-maintenance design. Environmentally friendly elements available. Longer usage life for oil and components. Reduces cost of ownership.

Heated Off-line filters

RMF Systems radial micro filter units are characterised by their extremely efficient filter elements with a fineness of 0.5 micron. The Off-line filter units with pre-heating are developed specially for cold hydraulic and lubricating systems. The electric pre-heating ensures that the cold and/or high viscosity fluid is brought to a temperature with a suitable filtration viscosity. Off-line filters with pre-heating can be applied to new or existing installations. The integrated pump-motor combination draws fluid from the reservoir, pumps it through a heating element, filters it and returns it to the tank. The heating is thermostat controlled and adjustable to any required fluid temperature. The heating is effected by a 'flow-through' principle, preventing 'burning' or thermal overloading of the oil. The Heated Off-line filters can continue to work even when the main system is not in use. Element change can also be done without interfering the main system. Economical The hydraulic market accepts that 80% of the mechanical failures are caused by contamination in the system. The RMF Off-line filters attack this contamination at source. In addition to solid particles, these filters are also capable of removing water from the oil. This prevents the catalytic reaction of water and solid particle contamination, resulting in an extended usable oil life. The use of RMF-filters means reduced down time, increased component life and extended service intervals with reduced oil changes.

Applications RMF Off-line filter units with pre-heating can be applied to any industrial application where it is necessary to heat the oil and maintain it at a particular temperature, such as hydraulically operated bridges and gear boxes in the wind power energy industry. Advantages Extremely clean oil due to the high filtration efficiency 0.5 200, 2 2,330. Prevention of channel forming by radial filtration direction. Increased dirt holding capacity. Large water holding capacity. Compact and easy-maintenance design. Environmentally friendly elements. Longer usable life for oil and components.

Mini Water Vac

vaCUUm dehydratiOn Unit The Mini Water Vac is a designated oil purification unit which can be applied directly to various types of machine reservoirs. It dehydrates and cleans most types of oil such as lubricating, hydraulic, transformer and switch oils. The Mini Water Vac is a self-regulating processing unit which removes particles, gas and water. The purified oil satisfies the most stringent quality requirements. Simple operation The Mini Water Vac neither removes nor alters oil additives. The water removal process is based on pure vacuum evaporation inside a vacuum chamber at a maximum temperature of 65 C. Solid particle removal is achieved through a well proven RMF Systems micro filter. Mini Water Vac does not require continuous supervision whilst operating. Once the unit is connected properly and commissioned, oil purification is a semi automatic process. Desired oil temperature can be selected on the thermostat which is included in the integrated heater element of the dehydration unit. Oil supply and removal from the vacuum chamber is a full automatic process which is controlled by a PLC. The only manual action is the emptying of pre-condenser bowl and waste water container, both equipped with a float switch to prevent overflow, which will shut down the dehydration unit once the maximum level is reached. Water, gas and particle removal Mini Water Vac removes liquid, gas, and solid contamination, which are corrosive and contribute to the reduction of machine life. Water, gas and solid particle contamination greatly increase maintenance cost and contribute to unwanted breakdowns or total machine failures. 38

Mini Water Vac offers protection against mal functions, breakdowns or total failures. The Mini Water Vac also protects the environment by reducing oil consumption and oil disposal along with it is inherent costs and problems. Benefits Efficient water, gas and particle removal. Extension of fluid service life. Reduces fluid disposal. Minimises corrosion within systems. Reduces operating cost.

Lube oil By-pass filters

Maintenance is essential for the efficient functioning of engine equipment. However, it is always a critical decision between the quality of the maintenance and the costs involved. Optimal maintenance efficiency combines maximum achievement of the maintenance goal (protection and prolonged usage life of the object) with minimal use of means (costs). The RMF By-pass filter is unique in that it not only achieves the goal, but saves on costs. The RMF By-pass filter keeps the oil clean, resulting in significant technical, environmental and financial benefits thanks to reduced wear and tear on equipment and machines and prolonged oil life time. RMF Systems BPL By-pass filters are used as an additional micro filter connected in by-pass to the conventional main stream filters on engines (and automatic transmissions). Most contamination is much smaller than 15 micron in size, but full flow filters generally do not filter below this level. This results in a lot of harmful contamination passing through these filters and remaining in the system. RMF Systems By-pass filters are capable of filtering down as low as 0.5 micron without detriment to the lubrication circuit. Whatever the application, the benefits of the RMF By-pass filters are all based on maintaining a higher quality and cleanliness level of the oil and thereby avoiding the multiple problems that can be caused by fluid contamination. Applications Construction equipment, agricultural equipment, forestr y equipment, diesel driven welding machines/generators and port equipment.

Applications Less malfunctioning. Greater reliability of operation. Prolonged oil usage life. Reduced down time. Reduced wear on cylinder linings and pistons. Less bore polishing. Less formation of black sludge. Improved engine compression. Increased equipment life time. Environmental advantages Less oil consumption. Therefore less waste oil. Increased life time of additives. Reduction of harmful emissions. Financial advantages Savings in labour and materials (oil changes). Reduced costs for repairs and downtime. Reduced waste processing costs.

Filter elements
The principal of the RMF Systems filters is based on the unique original filter elements. With a choice of filter fineness down to 0.5 micron they have the capacity to remove even the smallest of dirt particles from the oil. RMF Systems offers a wide range of elements in micron sizes, filter media and fluid compatibility. Through a carefully controlled quality process excellent delta P curves, filter efficiency, water and dirt holding capacity are secured. Cellulose elements The RMF Systems cellulose filter elements are unique in their design. They consist of several hundred layers of long fibre cellulose which are wound on a perforated center tube. The micro filter element works as a fine filter through which oil passes radially, from the outside to the inside, trapping solid particles throughout all the layers of cellulose. The long fibre cellulose is also capable of absorbing water, adding the benefit of moisture removal from the oil. RMF Systems cellulose elements are extremely efficient and have a large dirt holding capacity. The cellulose elements are produced in various sizes to suit all RMF Systems filter housings. The RMF Systems cellulose elements are compatible with most commonly used hydraulic and lubricating fluids, including biodegradable fluids. Glass fibre elements RMF Systems offers a range of glass fibre filter elements in a fineness of 1 micron and 3 micron. The micro filter element works as a fine filter through which oil passes radially, from the outside to the inside. RMF Systems glass fibre filter elements (conventional pleated construction) are extremely efficient and have a large dirt holding capacity.

The glass fibre elements are suited for all RMF Systems filter housings (except the size 20 housing) and are compatible with most commonly used hydraulic and lubricating fluids, including biodegradable fluids. The glass fibre filter elements are also suited for water based fluids. The glass fibre filter elements are particularly suited for gearbox applications where high viscosity fluids limit the use of the cellulose elements. Water sorb filter inserts RMF Systems offers a specially designed water sorb combination filter element: water absorbing and particle retention. This pleated filter element with a fineness of 5 micron has layers of polymers in between layers of glass fibre, creating a unique media to remove both water and solid particles from the fluid. Water sorb spin-on elements RMF Systems offers a specially designed spinon filter, the H2O Sorb for water absorbing and particle retention. This spin-on filter element with a fineness of 20 micron is constructed of a unique medium containing water absorbing polymer which chemically bonds water.
