Introduction
Travel & Tourism is one of the worlds great industries. Not only is it a huge generator of jobs, wealth and economic growth, but it is also a substantial driver of the global economic recovery. It accounts for US$6 trillion dollars, or 9%, of global gross domestic product (GDP) and it supports 260 million jobs worldwide, either directly or indirectly. Thats almost 1 in 12 of all jobs on the planet. Our industry is bigger than the global automotive sector and only slightly smaller than the banking industry. These are substantial numbers that explain why Travel & Tourism is such a major force in driving global economic recovery and growth. Travel & Tourism is also a force for good in the world, bringing people to different regions and countries, generating a wider understanding of different cultures and communities. Imagine a world without Travel & Tourism it would be a very different place.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) exists to tell this story to governments and to wider society. With the top 100 Travel & Tourism business leaders around the world as its Members chief executives, chairmen and presidents WTTC has a unique mandate and overview on all matters related to Travel & Tourism.

I was privileged to have been asked, towards the end of 2010, to become only the third WTTC President & CEO in its 21-year history, trusted with spreading the message about the importance of Travel & Tourism to wherever it needs to be heard. We do this through the media, through our Global and Regional Summits, and through our digital outreach, as well as by informing governments, through our industry-leading research, and by taking our message to wherever the worlds leaders are gathering. WTTC is the World Authority on Travel & Tourism, but we are not the only organisation that has an interest in ensuring that everyone understands the importance of our industry. We aim to unite the voices of our Members from the private sector with those of the intergovernmental agencies and organisations, and of the industry and trade bodies at a global level. No single organisation has all the inuence or knows all the answers, so it is incumbent upon us to create a Coalition that will target our messages in a clear and unambiguous way to ensure the industry speaks with one voice. Where it is appropriate, WTTC will take leadership on specic matters; and likewise, where required, WTTC will

support or follow others within the Coalition. It is not important who leads or who supports as long as we get the job done. This means building on the legacy that I have been left by my predecessor, Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President & CEO of WTTC from 1999 to 2010. I would like to thank Jean-Claude for his tireless devotion to the Travel & Tourism industry and Im delighted that WTTC can continue to benet from his insight and inuence in his role as Vice Chairman. As I look forward to 2012, I see a growth industry that can be a substantial driver of economic growth at a time when it is most needed. This is not without its immediate challenges sluggish growth in established economies, uncertainties with regard to the macroeconomic situation, the recovery of key tourism economies from natural disasters. But it is the role of WTTC, our partner organisations and everyone with an interest in the industry to unite to tell the world of the enormous economic and social benets that Travel & Tourism brings to the world community.

WTTC has a unique mandate and overview on all matters related to Travel & Tourism. We are currently exercising this mandate in three vital areas of activity and advocacy

Freedom to Travel
WTTC believes in the right of people to travel safely, securely and efciently across international borders. We recognise that there are genuine concerns about sovereign border security that must remain the responsibility of individual nation states every country has the right to defend itself as it sees t. However, it is the mission of WTTC to call on governments to adopt smarter visa and border security policies to promote Travel & Tourism as a driver of jobs and economic growth. It is time for a fundamental change in government attitudes balancing the need for security with our freedom to travel by transitioning to a faster implementation of visa waiver and trusted traveller programmes.

Tourism for Tomorrow


WTTCs mission is to maximise the sustainable growth potential of Travel & Tourism ensuring benets for consumers, businesses, local people and the environment. In order for future generations to benet from the experience of travel, we have to plan ahead: developing human resources, optimising relationships with host communities, protecting the environment, and preserving tourism assets. WTTC has long embraced the concept of Tourism for Tomorrow through its annual award scheme of the same name. While the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards specically recognise the worlds most sustainable businesses each year, it is essential that our planet, our people and our prots are all aligned for the future of our industry.

Policies for Growth


WTTC campaigns for governments to implement policies that support the growth of Travel & Tourism through the creation of a competitive business environment. Despite challenges to economic growth, Travel & Tourism is still expected to be one of the worlds fastest growing sectors. But it must have clear support from governments if its full potential to create jobs, increase exports and stimulate investment is to be realised. In fact, the impetus lies with governments to ensure that their policies specically pave the way for companies to offer services to consumers without burdensome bureaucracy.

Economic Research

Economic Research
Economic research continues to underpin WTTCs messages and activities. While measuring the size and growth of the Travel & Tourism sector around the world is challenging, it is critical for an understanding of its economic contribution. WTTCs methodology for producing consistent, comprehensive and comparable estimates for Travel & Tourisms economic impact across the world incorporates, and is compatible with the Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework (TSA:RMF 2008) approved by the United Nations Statistics Division.

Detailed reports for 181 countries and 20 regional groupings are published annually in March and available for download from our website (www.wttc.org).

The economic impact of Travel & Tourism

WTTCs latest research and forecasts show that Travel & Tourisms recovery is continuing, albeit at a constrained pace. In 2010, the industrys direct contribution to global GDP increased by 3.3% to US$1,770 billion, and this level of growth is expected to be maintained in 2011 and 2012 (3.2% and 3.3% respectively) since the industry has continued to face challenges from the economic slowdown and a deterioration in global nancial conditions through 2011. Nevertheless, Travel & Tourism is still one of the worlds largest economic sectors, directly and indirectly accounting for 9% of global GDP and 260 million jobs. The longer-term prospects for Travel & Tourism remain very positive, and continue to be boosted by strong growth and rising prosperity in emerging markets. We expect the annual growth in Travel & Tourisms direct contribution to GDP to average 4.0% between 2011 and 2021.

Travel & Tourism is predicted to generate an extra 69 million net jobs by 2021, including the employment generated through its direct, indirect and induced impacts. And almost 4 out of 5 of these 69 million jobs are expected to be in Asia (excluding Japan), Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

It provides an overview of the state of the industry today, highlighting its economic and social contribution to the world, looking at how the challenges and opportunities of the past ten years have shaped where we are today, and exploring priorities for the current decade.

Business travel: a catalyst for economic performance


Business travel accounts for nearly a quarter of global Travel & Tourism expenditure, but the sector is under scrutiny. Even as the world economy recovers, companies remain cautious about restoring travel budgets. Meanwhile, virtual meeting technology offers a ready alternative to in-person meetings, and environmental concerns have begun to inuence both corporate and government policies regarding travel. These trends raise a fundamental question with signicant implications: The second channel was an econometric analysis covering 190 countries, which tested for the existence of causal relationships between business travel and national economic performance. The results of these analyses are compelling, showing a clear relationship between business travel and corporate performance, as well as economic growth.

 Business travel improves global corporate productivity, yielding a return on investment (ROI) of around 10:1 Approximately one third of the growth in global trade over the past decade has been driven by international business travel Growth in business travel from 2000 to 2007 facilitated the creation of over 40 million jobs almost 20% of the growth in global employment  If business travel were cut by 25% over two consecutive years, global GDP would be 5% lower than would otherwise be the case after a ve-year period. This would mean 30 million fewer jobs an average loss of 1% of global employment.

What role, iF anY, does business travel plaY in driving corporate perFormance and in the development oF the global economY?
Published to coincide with the 11th Global Summit in Las Vegas, WTTC commissioned a study from Oxford Economics to seek answers to this question. Two separate research channels were used to inform the study. The rst was a survey of global business travellers and executives in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and China.

A follow-up piece of work putting the spotlight on Asia was undertaken in October 2011. It showed that, in most parts of Asia, the ROI of business travel is signicantly higher than other parts of the world. It also showed that Asia is more susceptible to a downturn in business travel. The study was sponsored by American Express, the Singapore Tourism Board, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the US Travel Association, and was translated and distributed in Chinese by CTrip.

The impact of the Tohoku Pacic earthquake on Japans Travel & Tourism
Following the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, which took place in northeast Japan in March 2011, WTTC launched an initiative to monitor the impact on, and recovery of, Japans Travel & Tourism industry. Oxford Economics was commissioned to establish a series of scenarios for recovery, with the rst report released in May 2011. Quarterly updates have tracked, and will continue to track, recovery according to these scenarios, updating the forecasts accordingly. The research is based on WTTCs annual economic impact research for Japan as well as published data from industry sources such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), STR Global and the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). The rst report, launched at WTTCs Global Summit in Las Vegas, set out three recovery scenarios and suggested that the overall impact of the earthquake and tsunami could range from a reduction of 0.9 trillion (low-impact scenario) to 1.9 trillion (high-impact scenario) in Travel & Tourisms contribution to Japans GDP in 2011.

Prior to 11 March, Japans Travel & Tourism was eXpected to contribute directlY 10.5 trillion to Japans GDP in 2011, or 2.2% oF total GDP, and to directlY provide nearlY 1.5 million jobs.
The second report, published in September 2011, showed that recovery is broadly in line with WTTCs low-impact scenario, which assumes that international tourist arrivals will recover in numbers by early 2012, along with a faster recovery in Japans own domestic Travel & Tourism demand. The third report, which is due to be published in December 2011, will reassess the scenarios according to the latest available statistical trends.

Policy Initiatives

Policy Initiatives
WTTC undertakes a number of specific policy initiatives to drive forward the agenda of our strategic priorities. Initiatives are identified by Members and led by Working Groups consisting of experts from Member companies.

Environment Initiative
In February 2009, WTTCs Members set out a vision for, and commitment to, tackling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the WTTC publication Leading the Challenge on Climate Change. The report underscores the important role of partnership in attaining the vision dened by WTTC and calls for an alignment of goals and efforts among leaders of industry, employees, customers and policy-makers whether in the commercial or public domain. Launched under the auspices of HRH The Prince of Wales, the report has since received commendations for the endeavours of WTTC Members in advocating sustainability within the Travel & Tourism industry through the aspirations outlined in the report. Since then, WTTC has continued to engage with the industry and policy-makers through active participation in United Nations Climate Change negotiations. A follow-up report, launched in November 2010 and entitled Climate Change: A Joint Approach to Addressing the Challenge, sets out WTTCs climate change policy recommendations, outlining clear principles for governments,

guiding them towards fostering an enabling environment for the sustainable development of our industry while recognising its important contribution to economic growth and sustainable development. This year WTTC, together with the International Tourism Partnership (ITP), embarked on a groundbreaking initiative for the hotel sector. The Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) project aims to streamline the way the hotel industry measures and communicates carbon emissions to clients. This is particularly relevant for corporate consumers who are interested in quantifying the potential carbon footprint of their meetings/ events at hotels. The Initiative, led by a Working Group of engineering and environment experts from 13 hotel companies within WTTCs and ITPs membership, is currently working on the second draft of the guidelines.

Human Resources

According to WTTCs economic research, some 21 million new jobs will be created in Travel & Tourism over the next ten years. These jobs will be generated as a result of the 4% annual growth in Travel & Tourisms contribution to GDP, and as a growing middle class from emerging economies creates some 2 billion new potential Travel & Tourism consumers by 2030. As a result there will be a massive need for people to work in new hotels, support the growing aviation industry and provide tourism services in destinations. However, the challenge is not just a quantitative one.

New consumers, new technologies and new expectations mean that those working in Travel & Tourism will need new skills and high levels of cultural awareness and adaptability. WTTCs Human Resources initiative has been established to address these challenges. Based on a survey of WTTC Member HR Directors, key priorities have been identied. These include: Bridging the gap between academia and the industry Promoting the benets of a career in Travel & Tourism Highlighting best practice in Travel & Tourism Human Resource management A partnership has been established with the Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI), a group of leading tourism schools, through which Working Group members can contribute to curriculum development and online seminars. WTTC has also been working closely with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA) on research into migrant workers in the hospitality industry.

Tourism for Tomorrow Awards


Thanks to the continued support of our strategic partners, The Travel Corporations Conservation Foundation and Travelport, WTTCs Tourism for Tomorrow Awards continue to go from strength to strength. Recognising best practice in sustainable tourism, the Awards attract high-quality applications from across the world and industry sectors. The rigorous three-step judging process, which includes an on-site evaluation of each nalist, continues to set Tourism for Tomorrow apart from other awards programmes. The 2011 nalists came from ve continents and the winners were announced during the Welcome Dinner of the 11th Global Travel & Tourism Summit in Las Vegas in a special ceremony presented by National Geographics Dr Brady Barr.

Taxation
The proliferation of taxes imposed on the Travel & Tourism industry around the world from arrivals and departure charges to rising VAT levels and bednight taxes has long been an issue for WTTC Members. Following a working session during its Annual General Meeting in May 2011, WTTC has renewed its efforts to highlight the negative impact of such taxes.

The Focus to date has been on the UKs Air Passenger DutY, which is not onlY putting pressure on the airline industrY, but is also having negative impacts on long-haul destinations such as the Caribbean, South AFrica and Australia.
WTTC has participated in high-level meetings with ministers of tourism of affected countries, and has had direct discussions with the UK Treasury, as well as mounting an intensive media campaign to raise awareness of the impact of this tax.

Central to WTTCs mission is engaging with policy-makers from governments and international organisations, to raise awareness of the importance of Travel & Tourism, highlight examples of case studies of where policy decisions have harmed the industry, and participate in initiatives to further the sustainable growth of Travel & Tourism.

Global leaders for Tourism Initiative
This joint initiative with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) aims to engender support for Travel & Tourism at the highest level of government. Heads of state across the world are presented with an Open Letter, highlighting the importance of Travel & Tourism, and asked to accept this letter in acknowledgement of the relevance of Travel & Tourism in facing todays global challenges. Quotations and images of heads of state and government taken during the presentation of the Open Letter will be used to build a Golden Book of Travel & Tourism and showcase their commitment to promoting Travel & Tourism to the world community as a means of promoting sustainable development. WTTC Members with active interests in participating countries are invited to attend the signing ceremonies. At the time of publication, this campaign has already received the support of the Heads of State and Government from Mexico, South Africa, China, Ireland, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Burkina Faso and Mozambique.

11th WTTC Global Summit, Las Vegas


The annual Global Summit is the forum at which the public and private sector leaders in Travel & Tourism meet to discuss how they can work together more effectively. The Global Summit in Las Vegas was no exception, with participation from tourism ministers from around the world and President Caldern of Mexico. Many of the discussions focused on the USAs visa policies, which have been identied as a critical barrier to the growth of the industry. Signicant steps forward were made with the US administration, with keynote presentations and on-stage interviews by the US Secretaries of Homeland Security and Transportation, as well as with one of President Obamas top advisors publicly pledging the administrations support for Travel & Tourism.

WTTC India Initiative


The World Travel & Tourism Council India Initiative (WTTCII) is an active force in Travel & Tourism in India, providing a forum for the industry to work closely with the public sector. WTTCII is currently chaired by Vivek Nair, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Hotels Leelavanture Ltd who took over from Arjun Sharma, CEO, Le Passage to India, at the beginning of 2011. Revitalised with a new Secretary General, former Secretary of Tourism ,Sujit Banerjee, WTTCII has had considerable success over the past year. Off the back of a major event in December 2010, designed to lobby different government departments, bringing together the private sector with key government players including the Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, WTTCII and the Ministry of Tourism made a joint presentation to the Indian Prime Minister in June 2011. Following this, WTTCII has been actively involved in the planning process for the Report on Tourism for the XII Five Year Plan (2012-2017), nalised in September 2011, with many of the organisations suggestions being incorporated into the Report. This includes, the incorporation of hotels in the RBI infrastructure lending list, deemed exporter status for tourism related service providers, visa facilitation, rationalisation of taxes and a National Travel Mart.

T20
WTTC is the sole representative of the private sector in the UNWTO-led T20 Initiative. The aim of T20 is to bring together the tourism ministers of G20 countries in order to further the Travel & Tourism agenda within the G20 forum. In 2012, during the Mexican Presidency of G20, WTTC will be working closely with UNWTO and the Mexican Ministry of Tourism to highlight the importance of Travel & Tourism in achieving the wider objectives of job creation, economic growth and international development set out for the G20.

APEC
The APEC Tourism Working Group (TWG) met twice in 2011 in the Philippines in April, and in San Francisco in September. High on the agenda at both meetings were crisis management and recovery, following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March. WTTC is one of only two private sector organisations that enjoys guest status at the twice-yearly APEC Tourism Working Group meetings, as well as at the biennial APEC Tourism Ministers meeting, in which WTTCs President & CEO participates. Following a discussion on impediments to tourism growth during the 2010 APEC TWG meetings, WTTC and PATA put forward a proposal for a new study to be commissioned by APEC, Creating Business Growth Opportunities in the New APEC Economy. This has since been endorsed by APEC, and WTTC is now working with PATA and the US Department of Commerce, currently Lead Shepherd of the TWG, to take the study forward.

OECD
WTTC participates in OECDs Tourism Committee and in its September 2011 meeting, held in Paris, was invited to make a keynote presentation on Trade in Tourism Services with a particular focus on tourism in China. Advancing the Trade in Tourism agenda will be a key initiative for the Tourism Committee over coming months, and WTTC will be closely involved in this work.

WTTC continues to serve as the forum for the global leaders in Travel & Tourism, bringing together our Members with other leaders from international organisations, the public sector and the media.

The Global Summit


WTTCs Global Summit is the pre-eminent event in the global Travel & Tourism calendar. It attracts around 1,000 of the industrys leaders and offers an unparalleled platform for speakers from within and outside our industry to share their views with an international audience of prominent business, nancial, political and media leaders. It aims to unite the sectors within Travel & Tourism and other industries impacted by, or impacting on, Travel & Tourism. The Global Summit is also considered a premier event for networking given the number and calibre of senior industry and government leaders who regularly attend. Contacts made or renewed at the Global Summit help to drive all segments of the industry. In Las Vegas, in May 2011, we were particularly privileged to welcome to the Global Summit a

number of well-known business leaders from around the world, including Ted Turner, founder and head of Turner Enterprises; Atustoshi Nishida, Chairman of Toshiba; and Steve Ridgway, Chief Executive of Virgin Atlantic Airways. The 12th Global Summit will be held in Tokyo and Sendai, Japan, on 16-19 April 2012 a year after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The main Summit will take place in Tokyo following a day of working sessions in Sendai, the city synonymous with the earthquake. Through presentations and discussions on key topics such as Japans recovery, Making sense of a rapidly changing world, Travel & Tourism as a driver of global economic recovery, Consumer needs, Todays airline environment and Tourism for Tomorrow, the Summit will ask:

A regional approach to events

In 2011, WTTC has begun to implement a strategy to launch a series of regional events around the world.

The strategY will create new events designed to deliver the objectives outlined in WTTCs mission, as well as providing signiFicant value to the events hosts and partners.
The rst Regional Summit WTTC The Americas Summit will be hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Mexico (SECTUR) in Cancn, and take place on 16-18 May, 2012, immediately following the T20 meeting, which will be held in Mrida. In partnership with SECTUR, WTTC will invite high-level delegates from the public and private sectors to debate a broad range of global issues in the regional context.

A growing Chinese Membership


WTTC has been expanding its presence and activities in China since the launch of the rst China Report in 2003, The Impact of Travel & Tourism on Jobs and the Economy. A second, follow-up report was released in 2006, and a number of different events were organised by WTTC in the country with Members during that period, in order to address issues of concern to the industry, such as future human capital needs. In 2010, we also held our 10th Global Summit in Beijing. The invitation from China to host this key annual event was particularly exciting given the dynamism of Chinas Travel & Tourism and its enormous prospects for growth. Indeed, China is forecast by WTTC to lead Travel & Tourism growth over the coming decade. These bullish forecasts are due in large part to the fact that, in November 2009, Chinas State Council approved new Guidelines to Accelerate the Development of the Tourism Industry, aimed at fostering the development of tourism and making it a strategic pillar of the national economy. One of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the country is Hainan, and the Travel & Tourism development and investment potential of the southern Chinese province is currently the subject of a major study by WTTC and Oxford Economics, due for publication before the end of 2011. Preliminary results show that, if Hainan Province were a country, it would already rank 15th in the world terms of absolute investment in Travel & Tourism, with a total expected to exceed US$11.80 billion in 2011.

And in terms of Hainans Travel & Tourism investment as a contribution to total capital investment in the province, its 50.9% share ranks it at the top of WTTCs world league table. Forecasts for the next ten years are even more impressive. From 2011 to 2021, the growth in Travel & Tourism investment in Hainan Province is expected to increase by around 9.5% a year reaching US$29.3 billion by 2021 (at 2011 constant prices and exchange rates).

Over the same period, Travel & Tourism will grow bY 8.4% in terms oF its share oF job creation, and bY 13.6% in its direct contribution to GDP (GSP, gross state product)
WTTCs increased exposure in China, both directly and through our Members many of whom have identied the country as a major source of growth for their own companies over the foreseeable future has also led to rising demand from Chinese rms to become Members of the Council. WTTC now has ten Members in China, and this includes six Members who have joined since the 2010 Global Summit, bringing a refreshing new perspective to the global Travel & Tourism market. We look forward to increasing collaboration with our new Chinese colleagues and will be developing further initiatives in China for the benet of all our Members and the industry at large.

Building a coalition

WTTC President & CEO David Scowsill

At the conclusion of the 11th Global Summit in Las Vegas, David Scowsill called on the Travel & Tourism industry to come together in a coalition so that it is better placed to engage in dialogue with governments and ensure that the industry is able to power global growth in the 21st century. The intention is for this Coalition to bring the travel industry together on issues on which there is shared ground, so that we can speak with one voice rather than adopting a fragmented approach as is currently the case and to ensure that our messages are targeted clearly and without ambiguity. Where relevant, WTTC will take leadership on particular matters. And equally, where required, WTTC will provide support or follow the lead of others within the Coalition. First steps have already been taken to establish this coalition. Discussions have been held with key international organisations and associations, and the concept will be further examined during the rst Travel Association Summit at the PhoCusWright conference in Miami in November 2011.
