RAILA ODINGA: HIS CONTRIBUTION TO

K E N YA @ 5 0
Its not easy to imagine Kenya without Raila and what the country governance would be today without him. While many
young people today may not have the benefit of history to understand where the country is coming from or what it went through, few can connect the struggles of Raila to the many freedoms enjoyed in the country today but much more the devolved system that guarantees equitable distribution of national resources to all corners of the country regardless of the political affiliations. While many may not appreciate ideological differences between many political parties in the country as many as they come, one distinction that has kept Raila apart from the rest is his undying belief in social democracy where everyone counts, human rights and rule of law. A liberal democrat with rare courage to face the unthinkable challenges, Raila took up from where his father left to see Kenyans realize the new constitution as a means to free them from the colonial constitution that Kenyatta and Moi leadership so cherished and used to reign havoc on the Kenyan people. When Jaramogi Oginga wrote Not yet the British soldiers in a brutal war that led to our independence. While independence was meant to break the country from any colonial yoke and hangover, it came as shock that the all the tools colonialists used such as demeaning constitution that they used to misrule Africans became a handy tools to both Kenyatta and Moi leadership. At independence which in a sense was a stillbirth there became two distinct forces one led by Jaramogi Oginga and others who wanted resources shared equally across all Kenyan regions and another by ruthless capitalists led by Kenyatta who wanted resources amassed at the center with President as the main guy to consider who and which region gets what.

ODM YOUTH LEAGUE REBRANDING

We proposed the change of name Orange young democrats league (OYDL) to ODM youth league (ODMYL). We deliberated and thought that this league needed a name that is catchy and one that does not need an explanation on its link to the main party. So our name will be ODM YOUTH LEAGUE with abbreviations ODMYL

The central system that was adopted by Kenyatta became the hallmark of corruption and nepotism that enslaved the country for close to fifty years and make no mistake the poverty gripping millions of youth in the country, broken infrastructure and uneven development in the country is directly related to the dislocations of unitary system of government. This state of affairs is what Raila and ODM movement are struggling to change. It is what defines us as a political party. Kenya as a country owes Raila and other genuine third liberation pioneers who made it possible for the country to attain new constitutional dispensation that makes it possible for once neglected areas of Turkana, Lamu, Pokot, Kakamega

among others to realize the fruits of independence by way of devolution.. Their selflessness has now earned the country a place in history as the first African country to have a revolutionary constitution that can largely be defined as peoples coup against wayward leaders who use state power to manipulate and brutalize their own people. That people can be allowed the independence of thought and exercise their free democratic rights and still get their fare share of allocation from government was just a few years back unthinkable possibility but the danger of the country going back to the dark old repressive days is now more real than five years ago. Its only the forest that has changed but the monkeys who messed the country before have regrouped threatening to reverse the gains the country has so belabored to have.

We are on a journey to make a vibrant youth league in this nation that will make ODM to be a party of the moment. A strong youth league is a strong ODM party. So far we had had 3 national officials who attended the Program for Young Politicians from Africa (PYPA). We have also had over 112 youth leaders in 28 counties trained by CMD, through FES we have a program that is now training five youths from different constituencies. youth league leadership we thought our youth had not been fully involved in the general elections fully, the youth remained to be the security to the dignitaries and spirants at all levels. To get out of that culture we realized that we must train our youth so us to make sure

NATIONAL YOUTH COORDINATORS DESK

On the 1st of July 2013,I assumed office which my predecessor Hon Zuleikha Hassan was before her tenure ended by being nominated to parliament to represent the youth. Since then I have had an opportunity to learn the rules of the game with some advices from my predecessor and the Secretary general of the youth league John Ketorah. I managed to set up a workstation where I have been operating from, so we have managed to negotiate training programs for our youth in the counties which are as follows:- CMD has been carrying out a training dubbed youth and communication whereby through it we have trained at least four youth and up to eleven Mcas in 28 counties. program for young politicians from Africa (PYPA) through the NDI has trained 3 national youth leaders, Political Leadership and Governance Program( PLGP) by Fredrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) is ongoing training five youth leaders. Our youth leaders have had an opportunity of attending different seminars both on Kenya and abroad. And lastly we embarked on constitution making of the youth league to enable us operate with some order. We are awaiting for the time when the youth NGC will adopt it so us we can forward it to the party NDC to ratify. Any input suggestion is welcome.
